How do you backup your computers?

One of the bigger swedish computer sites have a thing they call thread of the weekend. A couple of weeks ago the subject was backup. Lot's of different solutions with off-site backup, cloud storage and so on.

So now let's talk about us Crunchbangers. How do you guys backup your computers? Do you have a backup server, a nas, cloud storage or something else?

I myself is just about to set up an off-site server at my mum's. It's about 1000 km to where she lives, and I was really in a hurry, so I just installed Statler and put some disks in the computer and configured SSH.
My idea with this backup server is that I'm going to rsync stuff over to it through SSH. But security is a big concern. Both for keeping the data and for protecting it from being stolen. Perhaps I should set up some kind of disk encryption for my backup dir. The disks containing the backup is to be configured with ZFS. zfs-fuse is probably the way to go. Performance doesn't seem to be great, but that isn't really a con since the ISP only provides 2 mbit internet.
The only problem with this set-up is that my main computer runs Win 7 :rolleyes: (yeah, let's not discuss about that now...), so I need to find a good client. One solution would be to run it from a CB install in VirtualBox, but I guess there is a proper rsync client out there.

Best Choice for Kernels?

I know the question is subjective and personal taste but..................
I'm a Debian guy and I run Stable, Testing and Unstable versions of various Distros.
The point of my question is has to do with that with the latest Statler updated Images. I took Corenominal's offer in his announcement and also installed the 3.2 i686 kernel as well as the gdm logon...

Anyway, as #!CrunchBang is a blindingly fast custom work, I don't want to muck it up..

So, what experiences are others having with Kernel choices in CrunchBang... Pros and Cons?

Did a quick Google search and came across a very exhaustive list of Linux OS screenshots:

I was like, "cool", as I had forgotten this existed. To start off with, I of course had to look for #! and there were two entries, but they were both old Ubuntu-based versions.

My question is, Does anyone know anything about this list and how OS's make it in the directory?
I would love to see #! back on the list so we can expand the user-base.

I remember using this site heavily when I was distro-hopping (before I found #!). It was a great tool for testing the waters and seeing what was out there.

Planet CrunchBang Linux

[SOLVED]Swiftfox and Sabnzbd

Does anyone know how I can get Sabnzbd to pop up into Swiftfox when I start the program? Before I moved to Swiftfox I was using Chrome. And everytime I start up Sab it opens in Chrome. So then I just copy/paste the url into Swiftfox and close Chrome. But that's growing tiresome.

I know there's an option in the Swiftfox preferences to check if the browser is the default one used. But everytime I click 'Check Now' nothing happens. And beyond that, I have no idea how to get this app to open in Swiftfox rather than another browser.

Thanks for any help.

#! Media Server / Client

I finally got #! setup and configured on my laptop the way I want it, and boy was that a learning process.

Feeling bold now, and I want to make a Plex media server (PMS)/ Plex media client (PMC) combination box using #!. The PMS has an official linux build, but there is no official PMC for linux. That means running the windows version in Wine or using a homebrewed PMC (which the Plex forums have a link to).

The only thing I'm really concerned about is getting my WNA1100 to work with #!. I've read the 5 page thread about it on the forums here, but hope that was cleared up in the November #! release with backports.

WM keyboard shortcuts

I would love some complex shorts.

For instance,

if a window is focused, I could press SUPER + Z to minimize
Upon pressing SUPER + Z again, if no other window received focus, it would maximize that window again.

or if a window is maximized, I could press SUPER + X to restore it....and if a window is not maximized, SUPER + X would maximize it.

Is it possible to do such things? I was possible in ubuntu (last version i used, forgot the version). Where does one go to add such functionality?

Updating Statler images

Sorry, still no Waldorf, yet.

Anyhow, I have been playing around with updating the Statler images, again. As you might be aware, the 3+ kernel is now available via backports and I updated the #! Mozilla mirror this morning so Iceweasel is now at version 10. Now seems like as good a time as any to update the builds.

The only changes I plan to make are:

Revert to GDM -- whilst SLiM has been working well for me, I understand that it has caused a fair amount of trouble for others. The sensible option is to switch back. The SLiM packages will remain in the repository and are pretty easy to install, if required.
Basic window tiling shortcuts added to Openbox's rc.xml.
'firmware-realtek' package installed by default.

Also, I am thinking about creating backported and non-backported images. The backported images will have backports turned on by default (as with the current image) and the non-backported images will stick to the main Squeeze repos, with the exception of Iceweasel and Geany, which will track the backports repositories.

By doing ^, I am hoping that some people will not feel the need to use the old 20110207 images.

Does anyone have any opinions/suggestions about this?

Crunchbang#!Mobile for Android Devices

I am a big-time Android abuser and small-time developer. I've become discontented with the normal Android/mobile OS environment and I am dedicated to porting the environment and versitility of a full #! install, packaged with the speed and configurability of the Openbox WM.
This is to be accomplished through the "Nexus One Ubuntu" trick, link to come soon as I'm on my Android and I'm lazy. This method, paired with a quick script to call the commands to boot the visual chroot and theoretically anyone sould be able to (with some tweaking) get any major distro (or derivative) to run on any Android device without sacrificing function of the phone or other mobile device.
I have succesfully ported a Kubuntu build to a Samsung Tab, but now I want to port something actually useful. Anyone with Android devices or some Android Linux-fork know how that are interested in starting a Crunchbang#!Mobile project, let me know what you've got and let's send this incredible distro mobile!

Still playing Age of Empires 2, Half-Life series, Counter-Strike, Guild Wars, HOMM III, with Steam, L4D2, TF2 and more. I'm using wine 1.3.18 unstable version, actually it's very stable. :D Getting good performance with lots of games.

And btw, love Nexuiz, WoP, Sauerbraten and more.
