I have a local BSD/FreeNAS file server for media and backups. After a little trouble with incompatible package versions I was able to install nfs-common and portmap to access my server. I was happily playing media and copying files, but when I got to one particular file, Thunar froze for about 10 seconds, then crashed and closed.

Tried again, and same thing.

Booted into Mint, no problem with that file.

Booted into Windows, no problem with that file.

Installed #! on a second computer, same problem.

Installed #! on a THIRD computer, same problem! :(

I litterally can't even touch the file without Thunar locking up & crashing. If I draw a selection box in the window, it freezes as soon as it touches the file. If I go to the menu and select all, it freezes. Then after 10 seconds or so Thunar disappears and is fine when I re-open it (as long as I don't go near that file again).

The file is a 2.2GB unencrypted Blu-ray test video (m2ts). Nothing really unusual. And as I said, other Linux distros and Windows have no trouble with it.

So I know what you're thinking now. Must be a problem with sever access. After all there was that issue with installing nfs-common (had to force a lower version). I thought so too. Booted into Mint, mounted my #! home partition, copied the file to a local directory and rebooted into #!, and you know what happened...

Same damn thing!

So I installed pcman file manager, and pcmanfm has no trouble with that file. Copy, move, play, rename, whatever, it all works with pcmanfm.

So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunar, but I still have the same problem.

It's some freaky, obscure bug in Thunar!

And on a realted subject, what happened to thunar-dropbox. It got uninstalled with thunar, but could not get reinstalled because, according to synaptic it doesn't exist. I did a quick search here and found a thread with a dead link to a download, and a post by corenominal that said he put it inthe repos, but it's not there now. What's up with that?

And finally, anyone got a recommendation for a replacement file manager? Something lighter than Nautilus or Dolphin (don't want to bloat #! with a ton of dependancies). Pcmanfm is okay, but I'm liking it less than Thunar, so I want to try some others, but like everything Linux there are too many choices.

Thanks, Tim

Hmmm bit of a strange one, am wanting to update my laptop to the 64 bit persuasion to match my desktop. Have tried booting from USB key and cutting a CD, but both methods fail when trying to find the files on the CD as there is no recognised CD on the box. I've looked in /dev/disk/by-id and indeed there is nothing USB like showing there when I switch to the console in the installer.

Have just downloaded the latest image and used dd to create the USB image, but still no luck. The strange thing is I obviously managed to get this working from the USB key when I first installed Crunchbang on the laptop removing the previous Windows install which the makers had thoughtfully installed.

So my question is how do I get the installer to pickup the files on the USB key or on the USB CD ? Not too worried which version I install as will move to Wheezy as soon as anyway. The latest image reverting back to GDM suited me, so this is what I have been trying.

If the USB key or CD don't get mounted by the installer, how can I get at them ? Laptop is a Samsung 900X if that makes any odds.

Cheers

Enoch
