I wonder if at some point #! would go with a free font instead. Don't get me wrong, I like Helvetica, but it's a shame that we can't get something GPL'd to work. Nimbus Sans L comes close to Helvetica in many ways but they don't have a light version.
Helvetica is a typeface with a rich history. The design community is very much split into either love/hate camps over this pretty unassuming font. For me, I love it, and the font has come to stand for a lot of what #! stands for in my mind: You may or may not like it, but it's making a statement. It's simple and plain, but has style and heritage. It may look boring, but used by those in the know it can work wonders.
Plus Helvetica Neuve is actually pretty elegant.
Maybe a thin font like labtop?
That's not a bad font, and it's nice that it's available in a lot of variations! I didn't bother to find the license, but I'm sure you're aware that free in cost doesn't always equal free to use. ;)
I also like Quicksand for #! work.

]]>I consider that '#! CRUNCHBANG LINUX', as it appears on the top of this website, is the official logo, with the light Helvetica '#!' being an official shorthand. I love the minimalism and hope this never gets diluted.
