Hi guys I have been using a mbp for a couple years now, dual booting with bootcamp win 7 when I need to. Before that I built a hackintosh, and before that I used to use Ubuntu Ubuntu 4.10 (i'm talking waaay back). Anyways, I recently came across an old HP Dv1000 laptop and figured I'd put it to use with a small linux distro. I could Crunchbang and the rest is history.

Anyways, I am going traveling and figured it'd be the perfect computer to bring overseas in case it gets jacked or breaks, no real loss. I love crunchbang, but my buddy who is traveling with me needs windows 7. so i did some research and found I could install windows 7 with xp drivers and whatnot and so i did. I made sure to use gparted to resize the original 2 partition (100gigs SDA1 plus a small swap partition). I formatted the newly created unallocated partition fat32 so the windows installer could see it, and reformatted the partition in windows installer, and continued with installation. Mind you I'd been running a single OS configuration for over a month (crunchbang) and I know from past experience with old ubuntu that its easy to install win 7 first and Linux after so Grub can account for both OS's. Anyways, I figured i could rewrite grub after all was done. Only, a lot has changed it seems. I really need to brush up on my terminal usage, its been to long.

So now I can boot to windows 7 and i even edited the windows 7 bootmanager with easybcd to open the linux partition in the boot menu, but when i select it it just hangs with the cursor flashing...

I decided i'd try reinstalling grub on the SDA1 partition with my crunchbang on it. So i booted a live crunchbang, and opened up terminal and did this:

sudo fdisk -l

I find my linux partiton is SDA1

so then I type:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

That mounts my hd linux partiton, everything so far is good!

now it is time to reinstall grub on SDA1, right?

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

this spits back something saying" grub-install not found" or doesnt exist...

Am I missing something here? i dont mind if grub becomes my boot manager, infact i'd prefer that... just i cant understand why i cant reinstall grub with a command, am I doing something wrong?

OK, so I am truly ashamed because the answer to this is probably very obvious, and I'll gladly wear the dunce cap while I ask this.

A couple of weeks ago -- I think after an update -- the internal wireless card in this ThinkPad T30 stopped working the way it had until that point and gave me several choices of networks from which to choose, without connecting to any of them. The workaround was, of course, to use a PC-MCIA card, which I'm using now.

But now it's a.) kind of bugging me to have this thing sticking out of the side of the ThinkPad, and b.) I have another old laptop with no internal wireless card (a MicroPC) that needs the PC-MCIA card.

[It should be noted that I have a lot of older hardware because, well, I'm poor, but that's not really related to the problem.]

Here's what the drop-down menu looks like (with the PC-MCIA card in operation, and connected to the Linksys router):

I'd prefer not to go the ndiswrapper route, but I can if I have to. Any suggestions as to why this list is so, um, long?

Sorry, still no Waldorf, yet.

Anyhow, I have been playing around with updating the Statler images, again. As you might be aware, the 3+ kernel is now available via backports and I updated the #! Mozilla mirror this morning so Iceweasel is now at version 10. Now seems like as good a time as any to update the builds.

The only changes I plan to make are:

Revert to GDM -- whilst SLiM has been working well for me, I understand that it has caused a fair amount of trouble for others. The sensible option is to switch back. The SLiM packages will remain in the repository and are pretty easy to install, if required.

Basic window tiling shortcuts added to Openbox's rc.xml.

'firmware-realtek' package installed by default.

Also, I am thinking about creating backported and non-backported images. The backported images will have backports turned on by default (as with the current image) and the non-backported images will stick to the main Squeeze repos, with the exception of Iceweasel and Geany, which will track the backports repositories.

By doing ^, I am hoping that some people will not feel the need to use the old 20110207 images.

Does anyone have any opinions/suggestions about this?

Hi guys! I want to say hello and thanks for this awesome distro! I found an old laptop funning a pentium m 1.6ghz 512 ram and realized that windows 7 would run sluggish, plus I've been using osx for the last 3 years. I used to dabble in Ubuntu a few years ago and remember when small & powerful distros like puppydog, DSL and crunchbang didn't exist. I was on reddit and someone suggested for a small, lightweight, and usable on older hardware os, try crunchbang. I gave it a shot, and love how simple and great it is. I have barely used my mac since getting #! installed on this old lappy. But yesterday I was trying to dual install windows 7, which worked but MBR was rewritten and I cant get grub back. So for now I've been trying to mess with the linux partiton to restore grub

hey there my name is junior aka SuiCiDaL in yahoo games or SiNiSTeR on xboxlive. i've been using ubuntu for awhile now and am pretty familar with how linux works and debian. i'm a member of hackforums.net (if you have rules here about posting other sites im sorry) and was looking for a new distro to try out. mainly something lightweight because i just want a beast of a pc, considering i have a amd phenom 9550 X4 with 6gigs ddr2 ram. after reading alot of posts i decided on either archbang or crunchbang. i tried archbang and fell in love with openbox but found it a bit harder to update and install things, mainly my damn ati radeon hd 3200 driver! lol. some of the people on the archbangs forums are nice others are not i was asked in my help thread to use proper capitilization... really!? i wasnt aware that was that important, but anyways... moving along. at this moment im waiting for the crunchbang install to finish formatting the partion ill be using for #! and decided to post my intro here and get to reading up about #!. i look forward to learning all i can about this wonderful lil distro that ive heard so many good things about and thank any and everyone who has had a hand in getting this os to were it is today aswell as any help i may get from the community here..

:D ps i gotz cupcakes lol
..SiNiSTeR

WTF, seriously.
- Boardwalk Empire, still great. Still amazing.
- Hell on Wheels is a good western tv show. But finished after 10 ep. I read some news there'll be a second season. I hope it will.

My top five;
1. Battlestar Galactica
2. Rome
3. Lost
4. Game of Thrones
5.
