A short while back, crunchbang was made available to users as an XFCE distro in addition to the openbox distro...
And I LOVED the XFCE distro.... to me (and a few of my pals) it was theee best XFCE distro ever.... I was never gona leave crunchbang.

But before I knew it, the next release dropped XFCE, apparently because crunchbang had to be the best openBox distro, and to achieve this, crunchbang had to focus on just being an openBox distro.

... and well... like I said, I wasn't gona leave crunchgang, so I updated to the new openBox release... and well, it's #!, and its great!!

but..... well, I really missed XFCE. Still do.... and its not that I'm a newbie who can't configure openBox the way I want, but I like it when some things are automated for me... for instance, instead of editing some menu.xml file to add a menu item for a new app, I'd like it if it just got there "somehow".... after all, isn't a computer supposed to make life easier... do things for us

So.... what about it Corenominal... why dont you return the best XFCE distro we knew.... how about making #! theee best XFCE & openBox distro out there :-)

... pretty please, with sugar, spice and everything nice on top :-D

This particular post is half feedback and half suggestion, but I'd like to see the thread focus on the latter.

With only about 8 months of Linux experience, most of which have been spent on #!, I've slowly been coming out of my self-described quiet phase thanks to the incredibly friendly and helpful users here. After a transition from #! Statler to sid, I ran into a few bugs, all of which have been solved. It was my choice to migrate to unstable for the new software that it offers, and it is in the nature of Linux that one will have to solve problems and learn his way around such an environment. At this point, I've got all the tools and knowledge I need to set up my own system exactly the way I want it, and have only this community to thank for it.

My unstable #! system is the quickest I've ever used, offers the biggest pool of the latest software, is lightweight, and now that all my aforementioned transition issues have been smoothed out, I can't imagine distro-hopping again. I must tip my hat to the devs for designing this thing so damn well--all the "polish" that I experienced myself and read about in reviews of aptosid, for example, pales in comparison to #!. I have literally reached the goal that I'd set out to accomplish when I started using Linux, and it's thanks to CrunchBang. And it feels good. :D (Guess it's time to set a new one!)

I know that #! is a full-time project now, and while an unstable branch would require a lot more work to maintain, Squeeze is showing its age such that the current stable release has included backports and multimedia repos as well, leading to some diverging opinions. A separate release for stable+backports would do the trick in that case, certainly, so I suppose this can be seen as a continuation of that idea.

I feel I should explicity mention that this suggestion does not come from any dissatisfaction with the distro as it is, because I do believe that the stable version is as close to perfect as a Debian-based distro can be. I do not mean to offend by making a request of this magnitude; I just really would like to see a forum actively discussing an official testing/unstable version of #! and the pros and cons surrounding it.

Now, this may not be on corenominal's mind for quite a while, given the relatively short lifespan of Statler as the flagship version of CrunchBang. But I'm wondering if anyone thinks that the possibility/viability of introducing official #! testing/unstable versions is worth consideration at this point?

I'll start off by pointing out that all the problems I've experienced with #! sid were results of the upgrade from stable, so installing under the right branch would eliminate that factor entirely. I think a native image would make it nearly as user-friendly.

First let me type that I am not a developer (sadly) which means I don't know how hard this would be to do.

Problem: Many times I have wanted to collect photos or music from directories all over my computer or even removable media and then do something with them like e-mail or burn to CD. To do this you have to possibly make a common directory to drop them in and navigate all around and copy them a little here and a little there.

Suggestion: Have a feature that lets you navigate all over but with a right-mouse on a file it lets you add items to a file list. You could even name the list and save it if you do the same files frequently (database, etc?) Once you are done selecting, you right-mouse again and you can have actions for the whole list of files. The file list could be just a simple list of absolute file paths/names or if it would help an XML file that had the details.

I have run across this issue almost every time I want to put a bunch of MP3s or digital photos onto a CD or Flash drive. Open to suggestions. If I was a developer I would have written this myself.

Old_Doc_Digital

I'm a fairly experience programmer and have been working on UNIX/Linux for about 40 years. Currently, I usually work on Kubuntu and I'm more or less happy with the product and the support of the community. Definitely, I give a thumbs up for Kubuntu!!

About 12 years ago I was given an IBM Thinkpad 600e as my traveling laptop. It was a nice laptop for it's time and I used it until it died around 2006. Last year, I saw a local ad on Craigslist for a Thinkpad 600e, a mouse and a flatscreen for $40 and I could not resist buying it, figuring I would try loading Kubuntu up. I have a Pentium II PC in my basement that I used as print server and it runs Kubuntu, so I figured Kubuntu would load up and work (slowly) on the Thinkpad. Wrong!! I could not even load the OS on the Thinkpad. I then did a search on other version of Linux and found a number of 'small versions', e.g Linux Puppy, Lubuntu, just to name a couple. I tried installing 5 or 6 differend 'small' distribution on the Thinkpad and none of them worked.

Then I tried #!. It worked the first time!

Reason #1 - It works on my Thinkpad. Great job guys!

I have used my laptop some, but not a lot. Most of my work is on my desktops. But I have used #! some. I'm getting ready to start using it more and my expectation is that I will start using it a lot more. I'm still a novice, but so far I have been able to do everything that I want to do on it. What if really like is that it is so compact and yet seems to do all I want with out a lot of the other junk that I have to put up with in Kubuntu/KDE. I will evaluate long and hard before I make the final decision to move away from Kubuntu.

Reason #2 - 'minimal' design philosophy without giving up really functionality.

As I said, great job guys. Keep up the good work!

Jim Anderson

of space need to be available for APT otherwise it will likely fail
ungracefully, so for memory restricted devices these value should be lowered
while on systems with a lot of configured sources this might be increased.
Cache-Grow defines in byte with the default of 1048576 (~1 MB) how much the
Cache size will be increased in the event the space defined by Cache-Start is
not enough. These value will be applied again and again until either the
cache is big enough to store all information or the size of the cache reaches
the Cache-Limit. The default of Cache-Limit is 0 which stands for no limit.
If Cache-Grow is set to 0 the automatic grow of the cache is disabled.

6. I've been through the manual 2 times with "cache" highlighted and couldn't find how to increase it. I also found something else in Chinese about directories, but I still don't see the file to be edited:

DIRECTORIES
The Dir::State section has directories that pertain to local state information.
lists is the directory to place downloaded package lists in and status is the
name of the dpkg status file. preferences is the name of the APT preferences
file. Dir::State contains the default directory to prefix on all sub items if
they do not start with / or ./.

Dir::Cache contains locations pertaining to local cache information, such as the
two package caches srcpkgcache and pkgcache as well as the location to place
downloaded archives, Dir::Cache::archives. Generation of caches can be turned off
by setting their names to be blank. This will slow down startup but save disk
space. It is probably preferred to turn off the pkgcache rather than the
srcpkgcache. Like Dir::State the default directory is contained in Dir::Cache

Dir::Etc contains the location of configuration files, sourcelist gives the
location of the sourcelist and main is the default configuration file (setting
has no effect, unless it is done from the config file specified by APT_CONFIG).

The Dir::Parts setting reads in all the config fragments in lexical order from
the directory specified. After this is done then the main config file is loaded.

Binary programs are pointed to by Dir::Bin. Dir::Bin::Methods specifies the
location of the method handlers and gzip, bzip2, lzma, dpkg, apt-get dpkg-source
dpkg-buildpackage and apt-cache specify the location of the respective programs.

The configuration item RootDir has a special meaning. If set, all paths in Dir::
will be relative to RootDir, even paths that are specified absolutely. So, for
instance, if RootDir is set to /tmp/staging and Dir::State::status is set to
/var/lib/dpkg/status, then the status file will be looked up in
       /tmp/staging/var/lib/dpkg/status.

The Ignore-Files-Silently list can be used to specify which files APT should
silently ignore while parsing the files in the fragment directories. Per default
a file which end with .disabled, ~, .bak or .dpkg-[a-z]+ is silently ignored. As
seen in the last default value these patterns can use regular expression syntax.

Skimming for something useful vainly another 5-10 minutes have already have gone by. Granted, I just learnt how to search for patterns in a manual, but I'm still stuck.

7. Tik-tak. Running apt-clean command in the hopes that something residual gets freed-up and current limit will be sufficient upon new attempt.
8. Meanwhile googling for solution.
9. Experimenting with apt-clean fails, running apt-get update again wastes another 3 minutes, and I still can't install what I need.
10. editing /etc/apt/apt.conf, filename finally found on a blog.
12. starting to write this post so that I have an idea of where my time is going this time.
trying to find an appropriate subsection, going through the manual for pastes, etc, etc. Somehow another 15 minutes are gone.
13. noticing that I misspelled my sudo password so it's still not updated.
14. installing package - running into broken depencies
15. googling for solution a pop-up window freezez up iceweasel,
16. experiencing panic over loosing the post, getting up to get a glass of water
17. getting back to the computer, finding terminator gone,
18. running apt-get clean all
19. running apt-get autoremove - cursor starts skipping: apt-get is reading 6MB/s from local drive. Stuck for another 2 minutes.
20. Deciding to post before loosing the post.

The remote desktop client bundled with Crunchbang is fairly bare-bones and limited to VNC.
