Topic: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

Hi (first post),

I *really* like this distro for some reason -- have it on my dell mini 9.  If I have another system with Ubuntu on it (say, 8.10) can I migrate it to #! by adding removing packages?  How much more is there to it?

Thanks!

Re: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

Just run the script from the minimal install of #!, tryied on both laptops and worked like a charm.
After the instalation just remove all the stuff that you don't need...

Re: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

I have installed ArcheOS (based on Kubuntu 8.10) on a secondary partition and I am finding KDE+Old Ubuntu quite horrible compared to #! Statler.  I want that to be an OpenBox Debian system, especially a #! system, and yet preserve the dozens of programs ArcheOS provides.  It would be a pain in the butt to install these programs piecemeal, which is why that system exists.  The developers are migrating things from Ubuntu to Debian foundations, as #! recently did, but there's no telling when that version will come out.

Forgive me for asking a newbish question, but could you please explain to me a means of converting this to Statler without losing programs?  The link this thread provided to solve this question no longer functions and it is not archived from what I can tell.

Re: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

Ubuntu and Debian based distros aren't compatible. Unfortunately piecemeal is the only way to go. I'd suggest looking at your system/menus and make decisions about which packages you want to add to Statler. Once you have that they are just a 'sudo apt-get install packagenames' away smile

Thanks omns.  Unfortunately, a lot of these have a bad case of "dependency hell".

Re: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

Ubuntu->Debian is not a trivial thing.  Ubuntu or Debian to a #!-like setup not so hard.  Just uninstall loads of stuff, use Openbox and get a different theme smile

Re: Convert existing Ubuntu install to #!?

Okay, thanks.  Even though it's going to be a lot laggier I've decided to just use an iso of ArcheOS with VirtualBox and let CrunchBang take all the disk space.  I was reluctant since many apps I'm talking about are CAD-like or involve massive databases, and my computer is quite old already... But I'll see how it goes.
