Topic: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

So,  I've downloaded the ISO and installed the Unetbootin DEB. I used that to copy the diskimage to an empty 4GB key, which seemed to work. Reebooted, hit ESC a few times and tried to boot from the key:
'Could not find kernel image: linux'

I've done this before with Ubuntu-eee. I did check the md5sum (which was spot on).

So I'm stuck at the first bump in the road. Any suggestions humbly received hmm

Thanks!

The only thing I can think of is which target drive did you choose? /dev/sdc or /dev/sdc1 You should use /dev/sdc1 or the first partition of the USB drive and not the root partition of sda. Also did you try and slipstream in a different kernel?

Thanks Kestrel smile

In my case, Unetbootin only shows me sdd1 by default. I'm trying attempt three now, this time using the same USB stick I installed Ubuntu-eee with, and trying a different port.

(Would formatting the key to a Linux friendly format help? It's currently FAT32)

Nah, that didn't work either. I could try it on an SD card. I could also try it on my girlfriend's XP laptop. At this point, I'm basically just trying stuff. hmm

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Well if your just trying stuff, I had a problem with unetbootin on one of my thumb drives. I ended up firing up gparted, deleting the old partition and reformatting it back to fat32. It worked for me after that, but I think the error I had was different than yours.

I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

OK, not the greatest of suggestions, but how about getting a cheapo external CD drive such as:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Super-Slim-Extern … 240%3A1318

For less than a tenner including delivery.

In my distro hopping days (over now since I found #! big_smile), I found an external drive invaluable, and it also can be handy if you want to rip your CD collection.

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Thanks for the suggestions guys! That's a hell of a price for a CD burner, I may have to grab one!

I just put #! on my 1GB SD card (that I bought recently for about £3!) and it ran straight away. Booted pretty quickly and I like the look and feel. big_smile

I've been using Linux on and off for about 6 months now, and if my experience is a common one, the motto for the OS should be: 'Linux: If it works, it works' hmm

Anyways, I'm going to backup some stuff, watch Dexter and install Crunchbang...

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

btw - note that is a CD player only, and can't do DVDs...

not a problem if you want to play with distros/music only, but something to bear in mind.

I think some of the heftier distros are DVD only too, Foresight for example.

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

So, I see that some people like to use an SD card as their /home. I can see the advantages to this (more space available on the Eee itself and easy to move your data around).

If I use my computer without the card in, will it still be able to function? How easy is it to move my /home if I decide to put it back on the machine?

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

I think your asking for trouble there...

I'm not sure how linux would react if the home directory is removed, but I don't think it would be pretty...

How about putting the /home on the SSD and using an SD card for your large media files?

Personally, I use the 4GB SSD for the root partition, and the 8GB SSD for the /home directory, and that works fine for me. If I needed extra space, I would put in an SD card, and put my media files on that.

just my tuppence worth..  smile

Yeah, I can't argue with that. I'm going to try and install #! now - will report back if/when I get back online smile

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Well, I'm all CrunchBanged up! big_smile

When I was installing the kernel, I got the scary message:

W: GPG error: http://www.array.org intrepid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 9B25830FFD0C2C24
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

I accepted anyway. Anything I should be worried about? hmm

Also, the final instruction states:

3. During GRUB's initialization, press ESC to open the boot options menu.

The new kernel is either labelled "2.6.27-8-eeepc" or "2.6.27-8-eeepc-lean"

If it is not at the top of the boot list, scroll down to it and hit enter.

Do I need to do this every time? Will this selection become the default? Can I make it?

Also, wireless seems to be working, but I appear to be getting half of the signal strength from before. I've not taken out the ethernet cable yet to do a proper test, so no big deal yet.

I still have some fine tuning to do. smile

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

That's just a warning foomandoonian, don't worry. You can add the key somehow to stop the warning but I can't remember exactly how of the top of my head.

You don't have to scroll down every time on boot either, you can set the lean kernel to be the default.... somehow! I think it's there within the grub manager.

Not a lot of help am I! wink Fret not, someone here will know. If not, I'll look it up!!

Edit: ah, yes, wireless. Don't pay too much attention to signal strength, it's performance that will be the decider. I'm using the lean kernel and wifi performance  is good despite a signal strength of 57%. I found, with Ubuntu 8.10 + lean kernel, that switching to the wicd network manager and changing the broadcast channel on my router gave better performance. I've not had to do that with CrunchBang however! big_smile

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Cheers yelllo smile

Wireless seems okay, but I'm not getting the strong 100% signal I used to, all the time. That said, it's just improved. Importantly though, it works! I'll know If I have a bigger problem down the road, I guess.

I'd like to figure out how to change the grub default though. I'll google it later though - Christmas shopping beckons sad

Thx smile

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Yay!!!!

The "public key" error can probably be solved with these commands:

wget http://www.array.org/ubuntu/array-apt-key.asc
sudo apt-key add array-apt-key.asc
sudo apt-get update

The Grub is an easy fix:

gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Near the top you'll see a line that looks like 'default    0'. (If there is a # symbol at the beginning of the line, delete the # to un-comment the line.) Change this number to the position on the Grub menu for the kernel you want, starting from 0. For example if the eeepc kernel is number 4 on the list, change the line to 'default 3'.

(the reason it does this is that Crunchbang uses 2.6.27-9 but the latest eeepc kernel is 2.6.27-8, so it assumes you want the "newer" kernel)

ps I like wicd as well, definitely worth a try if you aren't getting good results with network manager.

Thanks both! Grub now sorted. I'm going to have a bit of a play. big_smile

If anyone is interested, I did a quick blog post (I'm pretty tired!) about installing #!, and you can see my first wallpaper and conky config:

Thanks for leaving the comment on my blog too. big_smile

I've just added the SVG here: http://drop.io/crunchbang.  I consider it a work in progress, but others may like to mess with it too. You'll need the Helvetica fonts for it to display properly. Accept no substitutes!

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Hmm, I just installed my first KDE app (I'm going to want a few of these). I can live with the KDE look and feel on these apps, but I'm going to need to resize the text. It's all rather large-print, and I don't have that much screen space.

I've tried to launch various things from the menu, like kde4-config and kde4-menus, but nothing does anything.

Any clues?

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Hmm, styling KDE applications is a pain. Okay, that first sentence was probably not much help, I will start again. big_smile The application required to style KDE applications will depend on the version of Qt as used by the application. As far as I know, qtconfig-qt4 can be used to theme Qt4 applications, see also: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … r-openbox/

I am not too sure about applications which use prior versions of Qt. Anyone else?

Re: Getting #! up and running on my Asus Eee PC 1000...

Thanks to some help from Seth and Kestrel in IRC chat last night, I was able to get tint and trayer working.  smile (Tip: It turns out that actually installing them first helps!)

This is what things look like at the moment:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/334785/Desktop_2008-12-21.png

I'm planning on gathering all the material I can and tweaking the hell out of the whole systems look and feel over Xmas. I hope to have a really nice and complete theme by the end of the holidays!

For now though, how do I get the desktop switcher back? I can live without a calender, but I use multiple desktops a lot! They really help make the tiny Eee feel more expansive...
