The main problem with this idea is the openbox menu. It really wouldn't be possible for the menu to dynamically generate itself based on the users selection. The crunchbang menu is a static affair based on the default package list.

Added to this is the nature of the crunchbang-desktop meta package which is basically a package with deps for the default set of packages. How you give options during the install in this scenario I have no idea. I'd imagine it's not possible.

Here is a link to a graphical editor for OpenBox menus.

^ I don't think there is much to say about pulse-audio in Crunchbang. It doesn't exist smile

I think this would bloat the install too much (not size, but length of the process).

Now something that could be very nice, would be a script the user could run after a #! lite install, which contains the ability to add all of the programs found in the 'full' version, and perhaps alternatives like you said. This would enable the user to have as light of an installation as they wanted, and allow users to sit somewhere between lite and full.

It could be community-based too, in that we could have a thread were people could suggest application to have in the script.

In this case, I think it is a good idea because for someone who likes the full installation, except a handful of program choices, this could be a quick and alternative way to install those programs without worrying about missing things to remove or dependencies.

i made something similar for myself, called the script "pris", for "post re-installation script".  it worked pretty well, was epically long, the longest i ever made, very custom, and very intensive for one person to maintain... at least one with my skills so far.  dont know enough syntax and shortcuts to be fluent enough to get the ol noggin on the logic.

anyways, waffling aside...

+1 for choice.

be it a few key app choices, or a more elaborate yast-like installer, then yes, i'm all for it.   there's no harm in doing htis and keeping a default selection process for those who want to be more fast-tracked through the installation.  no harm in making the os more accomodating to more preferences if it's done in a non intrusive way.    ... sry, prolly waffling again.   been medicated.  roll

i do like how crunchbang seems to be at the moment tho...  it is how it is, and everyone who's a app exploring kinda person goes and finds these other gems to try out, n if worthy, share with the rest, and if the rest (or just corenominal?) also find it worthy, it makes it's way into a subsequent release.

but then i also do very much like more choice on top of as minimal or as maximal or anywhereinbetweenable starting installation configuration to tweek to my tastes.  the kind of approach of "find something close and sculpt it to preference".   maybe a tick box for the really geeky where they can choose all the apps they want to use, then crunchbang installs just them, their dependencies, and nothing else (but the barest crunchbang essentials) ontop of the ubuntu minimal.
