Topic: (Semi) serious suggestion for spreading the #! word

Given that the world's economy is going down the pan, and that expensive proprietary software probably comes way down the shopping list of most folks ( behind food, heating and clothing), why don't we as a community start pushing #! as a cost-free alternative to that other expensive, unreliable PC OS?
And I know what we could call it... CreditCrunchBang Linux! lol

Re: (Semi) serious suggestion for spreading the #! word

This is quite a peculiar time for Linux as a whole, everyone initially thinks that the credit crunch will bring more people in, which is correct, but not in the way you think. Microsoft has the advantage of the OEM market, the end user doesn't actually see the cost of Windows and just pay the amount. Computers in general are a luxury in most peoples eyes and the credit crunch will just stop people buying new PCs, they've been marketed for years as a consumable, much like mobile phones, and hopefully the economic slowdown will change this.

So what will happen?

1. People with a technical ability, based on recommendation, will try out a Linux distro on a old PC
2. People with little to no technical ability will get a friend to install a newer of Windows on a old PC, from a non reputable source.

Time will tell, but this is a hard time for anyone in the industry, even Microsoft.

Well I always try to push linux.  To my family, friends...but if they lack any experience with linux it's hard.  It's come along way and it's easier now, but still...there gonna have a lot of questions.  Honestly I think my friends who are good with windows will still need lots of help going to linux which kinda sucks i think linux is awesome, especially crunchbang!  Altho I wouldn't recommend crunchbang to a first time linux user.  Openbox is too "hard", I would recommend something with gnome, probably ubuntu.
