Topic: error message from Totem when DVD movie is inserted. Also, synaptic Q.

1.  Totem error message
Here is the message:

"You are not supposed to show G_IO_ERROR_FAILED_HANDLED in the UI."

- Do you have any recommendations for other DVD players ? I have never been a big fan of anything with "totem" in it. I usually rip it out, roots and all, from ubuntu ASAP. I do like the idea of using more or less, native GTK apps in CB Linux, though, so I am hesitant to add lots of stuff like huge libraries, etc... with other movie players. What about VLC or Ogle, are they good choices ? Better recommendation ?

2. When I open synaptic it tells me that I am starting without administrative privileges. I know that I can sudo from terminal, but synaptic used to open with root privileges, I don't know what happened.

Thanks,

B

I also received his error in totem.

I prefer vlc over pretty much every other media player and it works without any problems playing DVDs here.

Totem error message

...Just a shot in the dark as I am @ work, but is libdvdcss installed by default?  You may want to check that out...

Do you have any recommendations for other DVD players?

VLC seems to do well.

:)

Re: error message from Totem when DVD movie is inserted. Also, synaptic Q.

I am building a list of known issues with the 8.10.01 release. Having read the above comments, I would suggest that the current fix for DVD playback is to install VLC:

sudo apt-get install vlc-nox vlc

Once VLC is installed, DVD playback should work without problem as libdvdcss is installed by default.

Just a note for brjoon1021: VLC is not a GTK app.

So you may or may not want it.

Good point Mystery Member smile If it is any help, efforts are being made to make Qt4 applications look more at home with the default CrunchBang theme, see: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … r-openbox/

There is a simple nice tiny dvd player, called Ogle.
When you install this package, just only a package!, you can play dvd movie.
(Seems #! installed all packages required for dvd playback)

Ogle is a DVD player with DVD menu support and some other useful
features like bookmarks, time skipping, multichannel audio,
and crop & zoom video and also:
     * Reads encrypted and unencrypted DVDs using libdvdread/libdvdcss.
     * Audio and subpicture selection.
     * Handles advanced subpicture commands such as fade/scroll and wipe.
     * Detects and uses correct aspect for movie and menus.
     * Fullscreen mode.
     * Screenshots with and without subpicture overlay.
     * Title/chapter search.
     * Supports different audio formats: AC-3, MPEG, LPCM (DTS
        only via SP/DIF).

But you must learn many shorcuts to control Ogle. tongue

read manpage for more details.

P.S. there is GUI version of Ogle, called Ogle-gui. But it's very ugly gtk+1.2 GUI. sad

How do you change the default action of disc insertion from Totem to VLC? I cannot seem to find it.
Also, can you add the latest build of VLC to the repos (0.9.8)?

Thanks,
Michael

Open   ~/.config/Thunar/volmanrc

and change

AutoplayVideoCdCommand = totem %d

to

AutoplayVideoCdCommand = vlc %d

how are you opening synaptic? if it's from the ob menu, edit the command entry to say 'gksudo synaptic'. same if it's from any launcher/panel.
