Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Hi Tim,

I'm not sure that your problem is related to the Cruncheee install, as it sounds like it's not getting as far as trying to boot an OS.

When you say "brief flash of gray", do you mean the ASUS bios splash screen? Or the GRUB bootloeader?

If it's not getting past the first screen (bios splash), I would suggest taking out the battery and AC adaptor, then holding down the power button for ~20seconds. Put the battery back in, and try to switch it on. Sometimes my Eee gets "stuck" with the persistent green light thing, and that's how I fix it.

Good luck!

Leeko

DUH!

So sorry, please delete my post. The battery was er.... flat.

I see mine was the 100th post, still the other 99 were good!

Thanks for the reply, sorry for wasting peoples time.

Tim

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Wow, thanks, installed on eee and using it now. I've tried dozens of distros, I, think with the 701 2GB size is a challenge, this is the only one that's worked,

If I can use it anyone can!

Congratulations on Cruncheee and thanks again,

Tim

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Hello to everyone. (Sorry for my bad english:) )  I've been using Ubuntu for about a year and I liked it very much, but it wasn't to fast for me on EEE PC, so i began looking for something "lighter" and I tried various distros(like Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu etc.), but I didn't like them much. Finally, I saw "CrunchBang" Linux on Distrowatch, three days ago I decided to install CrunchEee on my EEE PC 1000H, not for every day use,  but just to try it...and now I can say, that this is the BEST Linux distro I've ever seen...realy, it's amazing. It's based on Ubuntu(I don't like all RPM based distros), it's very fast, open box is very comfortable for me and finally it looks AWESOME. If I ever decided to make my own Linux distro, I know it would be Crunchbang Linux:) Today, I'm really enjoing my OS, because it works and looks exactly as I want. So...I just wanted to say a VERY VERY big thanks for this wonderful distro.
P.S. With Elmurato ACPI scripts almost everything works fine, including OSD and ACPI keys.(the only thing I haven't tested yet-external display)

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Hi everybody,

last weekend I ran a benchmark of 6 distros and cruncheee is the winner (with fluxflux in 2nd place). I have an Eee 901 Go (german edition which means: SLOW SSD) and boot time was my main concern (cruncheee was among the best), followed by codebase/community (ubuntu is imo currently best because of the broad userbase) and eee support third (preinstalled eee-control didn't do it for me but elmurato-scripts do work perfectly http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~elmurato/EeePC/). Arch was close but then I shyed away from the configuration effort. (How often do you have to reboot 10sec quicker to make up for the dozens of hours going into reading man files and example configs?) I already run a gentoo on an even slower machine (C7 1GHz) so I know what I would get myself into...

Of course, I have a few suggestions:

  • I found it odd to ask in the OP which applications could be ADDED. In my opinion, synaptic is easy enough to be used by anybody and the community is great at giving advice as to which software to use for any task. Apart from firefox and leafpad nothing should be preinstalled. (And you could argue about these two as well...)

  • Given the Eee's screen size, I believe the panel must have autohide capabilities. LXpanel doesn't have that (now) and neither does tint2, if I read correctly but pypanel and fbpanel do. I am currently offline but I will try those two at home...

  • As already mentioned above, eee-control from the ubuntu-repository was broken for me (and might be for all newer Eees). I tried eee-applet but that one resulted in several freezes of my system (mangled screen and all). I can recommend the elmurato scripts. Features and discussion here:http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=420248

  • That is probably a matter of taste, but I will change my 1px border in openbox from the top to the left side: Unlike with a mouse, it is difficult to hit the close button of maximized windows with the touchpad. It is easier to go to the extreme top right and just click there. Big improvement in usability I believe especially with the first generation Eees and their tiny touchpads.

I also have a couple of questions:

  • Has anyone ever tried fastinit (or finit) with a ubuntu derivate? How did it go?

  • Which scheduler is selected in the eee-lean kernel? I added elevator=deadline to my boot-line to make better use of the short access time of the SSD but that may be unnecessary...

  • Synaptic marks the "linux-eee-lean" (not sure if I remember the name correctly) virtual package for removal after I ran apt-get update. Why? I've kept it for now...

  • Is there a way to have instant feedback that a program is loading? I once started 4 skypes before realizing I was still waiting for the first to come up. This is particulary an issue with the acpi hotkeys above the keyboard and quicklaunch icons as they have no other feedback (like the menu, which disappears after clicking an entry.

Thank you for a great distro and a fine selection of base tools! It is exactly the same I would have chosen. Apart from the (imho) bloat in the "internet" branch everything is both slim and expandable in whatever direction you'd want to go (office, games etc.).

Keep up the good work!
Hajo

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Follow-up to my own question about the scheduler above:

#cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

reveals the active scheduler to be CFQ (completely fair queueing). I suggest everybody with a SSD uses deadline or even noop here to make use of the short seek times of the flash and get a generally more responsive system. Google for it, there are several ways: I suggest to change the "kopt"-line in /boot/grub/menu.lst to include elevator=deadline (or noop). Note: Keep the one(1) '#'.

I have been using elmurato's scripts on my 1000HA with great success... does eee-control provide full support for the ACPI function keys, including the external display? Sorry for the noobish question, I have not had any experience w/eee-control to date.

If eee-control will work just as well as elmurato's ACPI scripts, then I will do a clean wipe and install !# tonight.  More than likely the full version though, then just tailor it as needed.

On my eeepc 900 all acpi keys quite as they should. some are even customizable.

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

First off, just want to thank corenominal for Cruncheee. This is the first real Linux-based OS that I've truly enjoyed, learned about using on a regular basis, and have had on my machine for more than a week before thinking about going back to XP. All can be as expected, with scrolling and text entry having their occasional problems, although I think that's more down to the specs of the machine (early adopter of the 701) than the code itself.

I do have one problem though, and it's a bit of a trivial one, but for me, it's an issue. VLC will slip up while playing video files occasionally. I have a USB Hard Drive that has the files on them (converted from a laptop HDD), and when playing it occasionally skips, both with sound and video. There's a short blank spot (The last frame remains displayed), and a gap of audio before it goes on as if nothing happened, entirely skipping the section of video. It's not the video file, nor is it the EeePC at fault (all video files play fine on my desktop, and when my EeePC had XP on it, or Ubuntu Eee with VLC installed myself). So, something has to be interfering with it. The CPU is at 40-60% while playing the video, and I've upgraded the RAM to 2Gb. Is there a solution?

Thanks

EDIT: It's not Crunchbang at it's core. It's CrunchEEE. Installed Totem on CrunchEEE to double check, and the USB live version of Crunchbang works just fine.

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

Just installed crunchee 8.10.01. Most things seem to work appropriate, except for the following:

On boot, no splashscreen is displayed, just the console text, on shutdown however the crunchbang splash is displayed.

I can not tell anything about the eeepc's hardware functions yet, first need to install eeepc-control

G'day,

just thought I'd mention the CrunchEee distro runs from usbstick on the Acer Aspire One as well.

I tried to install crunchbang a month ago onto usbstick using the cdrom iso & it would stall on boot, - unet - not - bootin.

  Will explore some more.

Hello!

New here - and i thought, post number 111 in this thread would be good to begin with. cool

So what did I want to say...

Thank you very much for Crunchee! Finally I dumped ole XP from my 901´s first SSD. Had been trying out fluxflux and Mandriva, with also work otb, but Cruncheee for me was the first Linux to deserve a place on sda1!

Added wbar for quickstart and lxpanel for having a nice menu (or was lxpanel in Crunchee by default???) and am a happy camper. smile

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

can someone please post the md5 for the cruncheee-8.10.02.i386.iso?

tia!

Hello linux_author smile

The new releases are having their documention written at the moment. See the 8.10.02 download page for more information and the new md5: http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/downloads/8.10.02

P.S. Welcome to the forums smile

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

hi,
I have just installed cruncheee on the SSD of my 701 eeepc
Xorg is hogging 20-30% cpu even before any programs are launched
Anyone have any ideas? :S

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

thanks! the md5 i was looking for on the 8.10.02 release (and recv'd) was:

9faf2d14f51042932d6b0c0136512693

so, now off to run http://aligunduz.org/FUSBi/

update:

installed on partition 1 of a spare thumb drive, and booted to the live session - pretty slick little (sub)distro!

i like that eee-control is present and ready on the desktop! there seems to be everything i'd need at the ready!

good job!

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

I have downloaded , burnt and booted the cruncheee 8.10.01.i386rc1.iso
to try out Crunch EEE on my Asus EEE 701 netbook.

Upon booting it I noticed it's missing "Install OS" choice in the menu
Loading the gui does not present a install onto SSD shortcut either .

I tired rebooting and typing INSTALL and [ENTER] instead of plain enter
its now loaded X without anything else on the black plain screen .

While it was in Live GUI mode it was using 25 to 29, avg 27 of CPU power.

Any trick to installing Crunch EEE using cruncheee 8.10.01.i386rc1.iso

Note: I don't have any extra SD or USB sticks connected, just the stock 4 gig built in SD drive
but I did Upgrade the RAM too 2 gig .

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

A quick note - to install to sd card - you must have eee-control, card reader set to on . Then you can choose the sd card at the installation partition setting page.

It is a good idea to install the mbr to the eee disk and not to the sd card.

Re: CrunchEee 8.10.01 Release Candidate 1

This still doesn't actually get me into a install phase setup program

If I need an 'eee-control' extra thing why wasnt it built into the distro and enabled upon start up along with the card reader detected and enabled ?

Hello charliebrownau smile

Sorry to read you have been having installation troubles sad For what it is worth, eee-control is now included in the latest release. Also, every effort is being made to improve the documentation for installing CrunchEee, please bear with me.

why? i have a 900 and 1000 and prefer to leave the internal SSD untouched while experimenting with other operating systems (netbsd, openbsd, haiku, etc.)... the bootloader (grub) is installed onto SDHC media with a bootable first partition, and the eee BIOS is used to set drive boot priority - this seems to work quite well...
