i remember reading about it some time ago, but according to slashdot today,  the bug is finally(?) fixed in upcoming ubuntu 9.04, and coming to 8.04/8.10

Wow -- whether it was ultimately Ubuntu's fault or not, I'm amazed it took so long to address.
