Topic: A roll-your-own #! script

I have seen this implemented in at least two distros, with varying degrees of success.  Basically, you get a base system (a live CD), then remove the apps you don't want, install the apps you do want, and change configurations settings as you see fit, then make that system into a .iso, so you have a self-configured system, and you don't have to spend 2 hours or more configuring every fresh installation how you want it, you can just install from you own cd re-master.  Also, you have a pre-configured cd system, so every time you boot off of the CD, it loads applications and settings as you want it to.

In Damn Small Linux, this is called a MyDSL re-master, and it is a fairly painless procedure.  I was wondering if we could have anything like this, and, if someone has already made it, or it is included and I just haven't come across it, could you please link it or give the menu steps for making this?

It's not that I dislike the default apps, I just like custom setups, and some of them (like inkscape) I just never find myself using.  Note that I'm not asking you to change the apps or settings for your CD, I just want to be able to make one more suited to my needs.

(No, I didn't make that, but it holds true, so I use it in my sig)

Re: A roll-your-own #! script

I actually would LOVE something like this, seeing as the new version of #! will replace and install many applications that I got rid of, which is why I'm not going to update #! just yet.

Hello Dan smile

Please see: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/5176/#p5176

As I mentioned in the post, I have not tried it myself, but you are welcome to try. If you do, please let us know how you get on. smile

Re: A roll-your-own #! script

I'm curious, if you wish to have this much control over your linux build, why not use Arch or Gentoo? #! does a fantastic job of being a lightweight distro it's really not that much hard work to uninstall a few apps, is it?

Well it can be repetitive and time-consuming if you install on multiple computers.

Agreed.
Also, when you spend time messing with configuration settings, having an update mess with them is not fun.

Re: A roll-your-own #! script

a roll-your-own script sounds great smile
dan: what do you mean you dont use inkscape?! ..whats the point in having a computer if youre not going to run inkscape on it!?  tongue

Re: A roll-your-own #! script

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll be sure to try the method corenominal linked to in the coming days.

And, to papparonny, it's not that I don't like inkscape, it's just that that's not the kind of work I do, and the GIMP works fine for everything I need.  (I mostly to php coding, not so much visual art).
