Topic: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

Hi,

Not that I am lazy or much dumber than the average ignorant, but I still foresee some issues with my personal crunchbang transition to debian. ubuntu is based on debian so I don't expect big problems - but IF there are any significant differences (e.g. launchpad?) it would be nice with some pointers as to what those might be.

Just an idea for the kind people who have already given so much.

Sincerely

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

  • Don't to mix Ubuntu and Debian repos.

  • Debian uses Iceweasel instead of Firefox

  • Some Debian packages may be older than the Ubuntu equivalent*

*Examples: nvidia driver, conky

+1 to anonymousse, plus:

  • if your hardware needs restricted drivers, check the Debian wiki (they're not auto-detected like in Ubuntu)

  • don't worry if it doesn't crash... it's normal

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

good point, the wiki will need updating anyway, so I'll add a 9.04 -> statler page aswell, ill hold off until theres at least an alpha out tho.

- - - - - - - - Wiki Pages - - - - - - -
#! install guide           *autostart programs, modify the menu & keybindings
configuring Conky       *installing scripts

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

Yes, some kind of guide would be very helpful.
I think the wiki should at least have links to guides, if they are found in other places.
For example, restricted drivers are extremely important.

that would be really appreciated! thought about making a clean install, but since I probably will be quite busy at work in the next few months and not moving to statler ist NOT an option hmm, some help in upgrading would really be nice. thanx!

So why not mix repos? Ubuntu can use deb repo's fine right - what exactly is the problem?

Where  can I find the restricted drivers I need? can I install jockey maybe?

How can I use the newest reps (I always want the latest openoffice, browser, freemind etc.)

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

i know you can use envyng to install nvidia drivers pretty easy. as for wireless drivers i aint sure i never had to install them.

Mixing repos is a bad idea because more often than not Ubuntu packages use packages that are Ubuntu specific e.g packages made by ubuntu devs.

1. Ubuntu has their own way of doing things that may--or may not--be compatible with the "upstream."

2. Nope, no jockey: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=35848
Debian wiki is awesome, for example if you need nvidia: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=35848
I also like the scripts from smxi.org for graphics tweaks and other useful stuff.
Also we do not know yet what magic tricks Corenomial has up his sleeve... smile

3. Statler is based on Squeeze and will not have the newest version of anything. Some of us are contemplating a conversion to Unstable, obviously this is strictly theoretical and untested at this juncture: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … onversion/

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

This is a great topic as I've just installed the Alpha 1 after being an Ubuntu user for a while. Not really sure what the difference between them is,  other than Ubuntu is based on Debian and releases are every 6 months, whereas Debian is very slow to go to release but is much more stable.
I'd like to why it is mentioned not to mix repos. I've downloaded and installed Firefox and Thunderbird from the Ubuntzilla repo and both are running fine. What problems could I run into in doing this type of thing?

Re: suggestion: ubuntu 2 debian transition manual

Well Ubuntu's packages are modified from Debian packages and they're not always 100% compatible with each other.
