I copied the Xfce version of Statler to a USB drive using unetbootin. The live session works, but the installer wants to load some CD drivers on my EeePC and then errors out saying it can't load stuff from the USB drive. I've tried multiple USB sticks.
Any suggestions?
I'm having exactly the same problem.
It's got me stumped aswell.

I tried this originally, before i switched to using a cdrom.
I never even got to this step:
the install will prompt you to “Load CD-ROM drivers from removable media?”
Because the step never even appears.
I think some pictures would reeaaaalllly help the wiki page.

Agreed, although offering some USB specific images might help to solve the problem. With hindsight, it might have been an idea to create some USB images for the first alpha, but I have to admit that I did not realise quite how popular USB installs have become. Lesson learned. 
P.S. Interestingly, I have now tried following the instructions on the wiki on multiple machines and with different images, it has worked every time. 
... so I suppose I'll try following the instructions in the wiki (ie using dd) then.
(Just completed Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Statler OB after 24 hours waiting ...)
Sounds like Unetbootin does't work. Anybody tried any of the following?

I had the same problem as you, but solved it by choosing the option "Start terminal" (I'm translating from swedish, so I don't know exactly the name, but the option is placed above the "Abort installation entry" in the Debian installation-program.
From the terminal I did mount /dev/sda to the /cdrom folder:
mount /dev/sda /cdrom
then returned to the debian installation-program by writing:
exit
in the terminal.
Edit: As is it not so obvious, this comment is about the installer not finding the cdrom when installing from USB.
Right then,
Never done this image stuff before, bear with me.
This is exactly how I did my install.
First, I located my usb stick using gparted:
Then I dd'd (as root, you can use the 'sudo' command instead) the image to the stick, you need to be in the relevant folder in your terminal.
Start up your EeePC with the stick in, press escape at the BIOS screen and choose the stick:
Choose a 'text install'
Your language
Your Location
Your keyboard
Don't load the CD drivers
Manually select a module
Select 'no module'
Put in the location of the stick (/dev/sdb in my case)
off you go!
This should be the next screen:
This is how it went for me on an EeePC 1000HC and i have duplicated these steps to be sure.

Do your systems have CD drives that you have chosen not to use? It could be that the installer is giving different options for different hardware.

Doing this on my aspire one, with the i686 iso it wouldn't work, tried the i486 one and it worked a charm.
Guess either my memory fails as to that the atom needs or somethings up, not sure which.
Tried XFCE i686 on USB, and it would not boot on my eee pc 1005HA. Used both pendrive linux installer on windows partition, usb installer on UNR partition, and CLI from wiki. No boot. Now working on i486. Will let you know how it gets on.

Haa This worked, for me. Typing this from the live session. Quite interestingly my usb keyboard (logitech ultra flat) with which I had to use PS2 (sorry using gb keyboard atm... dunno where the slash is) connector to get it work, did not work with the PS2 connector now but without it. Although first I thought that my keyboard was lost case 
. Anyway looking good so far. Have to test Pino.

Guess I'll wait for it to develop further, unless you guy's have some suggestions. It is a beautiful warm day here in SE coastal North Carolina. I am going to rest my eyes, and catch some rays.

could not find kernel image probably points to a bad copy/burn. Try downloading the iso again, and going through the process again.
found a solution to the usb install hickup 
Select "No" from "Detect and Mount CD-ROM"
Main Menu Select "Execute Shell"
type: mount /dev/sdX cdrom
(mine was "mount /dev/sda cdrom" because my hd is /dev/hda)
type: exit
Main Menu select "Detect and Mount CD-ROM" again
voila

Nope. The EeePC 901 which I am using has no optical drive.

Mine has a cd drive which im not using.
Well, after much trying, I will have to wait on the next release. i just cannot get it to boot. Tried changing the syslinux file name to isolinux. Net complaint read to the effect that it could not find kernal image: linux. whatever that means. I have done some comparisons with other distros that i have downloaded and booted from USB, and I don't see too much difference. So i am stumped. i am downloading Crunchbang 9.04.01 now to take a new iso through the USB creation process, just to see if it boots sucessfully. That way I can rule out thumbdrive and utilities as the culprit.
I have to use USB for now, no external optical drive.

Free your Software -- Free your Life You know, now that I think about it, I had only one other iso that would not boot. That was the latest ArchBang alpha release. Neither the ubuntu USB creator nor pendrive linux creator would touch it. I don't know much about Arch, so i can't say for sure what the installers didn't like.

The same iso, that let me install from cd, alos gave me that "can't find kernel image"-error, when trying to boot my eee901 from dd' ed usb. So it'not a faulty download.
Now just made a second atempt to write the iso to usb - this time with the "sdd" - command (sdd seems to be the succesor to dd) - and presto: I see the boot-menu directly in front of me. Now going to try an install on eee.
"sdd seems to work better than "dd" - already had this once, that dd would not write an image on usb; installed sdd an all went OK.
I'll post back, if my eee-install is finished...
Edit: Install at 85% now. At first: no cd found. Did that shell thingy above - gave a failure notice. Went back to "load drivers from cdrom?" Answered no two times and then waas questioned to manually set the source drive. Entered /dev/sdc and install started. Had to manually enter a static ip and dns for the network to start.
Edit2: Install finished. Boot from grub to conky (autologin) 21 seconds - from slower second ssd !! Detected my wifi correctly, but have problems to connect. Looks good anyhow...
