Topic: FluxBang idea abandoned

Pfft! I was all excited about creating a Statler FluxBang edition, but after running the OpenBox edition all my dreams were shattered!

Thanks a lot Corenominal! neutral

This OpenBox version of Statler is so unbelievably fast, good looking, well laid out, that there is nothing I can possibly do with Fluxbox that will even come close.

I am still working on a Tota Fluxbox edition as well as the Dreamlinux Fluxbox module (I love Fluxbox), but my Crunchbang install is going to stay OpenBox.

What an amazing piece of work, really.

I now have three Squeeze-based distros side-by-side on my main laptop.

rich is a very happy bunny big_smile

Great work Phillip, this is the first distro I haven't Fluxbox-ized wink

Re: FluxBang idea abandoned

Thank you for your kind words, richs-lxh smile

I have never really used Fluxbox to any great extent, but I am sure it must have some advantages, or features which Openbox does not. It is your decision, of course, but I would hate to think that anything I have done would put you off doing something you might have planned, especially if it is something you enjoy doing!

Anyhow, I am pleased you are liking the Openbox version and thank you again for your kind words! smile

I am still creating the Tota Fluxbox Edition and a Fluxbox module for Dreamlinux, so still plenty of Fluxing to do smile

I'm just very happy with the OpenBox desktop Crunchbang, it's implemented so well that I don't want to change it.

Re: FluxBang idea abandoned

Hi richs-lxh

a suggestion -

what about writing a script to install fluxbox and create the application menu after installing "Statler".

should be useful to anyone who is interested to give fluxbox a try but is not familiar with the in's and out's of fluxbox

Re: FluxBang idea abandoned

Fluxbang would be nice,,,What ive noticed between Fluxbox and open box is there very similar in how you edit things,,Im not sure there will be any real performance benifits to a fluxbox system over an openbox.
I think it would be more on par with  XFCE.

Linux Mint Flubox is similar to XFCE were anything you install automatically get put into the openbox menu unlike Openbox.
Which is a great idea for the people who want that.
Because of #! i just prefer  anything that has a right click menu..

Why don't you introduce to both distros tint2 as a replace to old school looking fluxbox panel?
There isn't any linux distro with fluxbox without fluxbox panel wink  TotaLinux or DreamLinux could be the first! smile

That would be nice,,The flux panel isnt as nice as Tint.
You edit them the same way,,So technically you could make the Flux Panel look like tint2.

No need for that - you just have to comment out fluxbox panel and install tint2 and put an entry to fluxbox autostart.sh

Tota Linux already has that on the Fluxbox desktop. It is something I have also implemented on the Tota Fluxbox Edition. Tint2 was something that Crunchbang introduced me to, and I am using it on all my Fluxbox desktops at the moment.

The point with my Fluxbox desktops is the use of light applications such as Xfe as a file browser and other similar apps which Crunchbang also uses. I think the beauty of Crunchbang is it's implementation of OpenBox along with the apps it uses. If I were to create a FluxBang, it would have different apps and therefor no longer be Crunchbang, if you see what I mean.

Also, if you had Fluxbox but with the same Crunchbang apps, it would be more or less the same as using OpenBox as they are very similar with regards to the right-click menu and editing of files to configure them etc.

If any body is interested in trying out Fluxbox, I could by all means provide a ready made set of menus and startup scripts which could be dropped into the .fluxbox directory.

That way you could just install Fluxbox, then have preprepared FluxBang. It could be used as a template ready-made for personal customization.

Re: FluxBang idea abandoned

I suppose color is a bad word in CrunchBang, but I like the icons in the Fluxbox menu. Otherwise, I agree there's no significant difference.

I've been using Lxpanel in my Ubuntu Lucid Fluxbox system, but seeing Tint2 in Statler led me to make the switch in Ubuntu. Tint's large workspace sections and transparency look great with my colored backgrounds. cool

Oki, didn't know that - good for you&TotaLinux big_smile

Scripts are always welcome - since you can borrow them and redo wink

I actually did that with the Crunchbang logout/shutdown buttons on Tota. I just edited the script to work with Fluxbox.
In fact my first Conky was "borrowed" from omns. I would love to be able to write good scripts, but it something that has alluded me, so luckily distros like Crunchbang have a lot of community provided material which is easily editable.

I think that's what attracted me to Crunchbang. It already has a lot of things that I thought would be cool on my other distros. I like building distros (well, remixes) but at the end of the day there's no point reinventing the wheel if there is a distro that already has practically everything you need.

Now that Crunchbang is Debian, it's close to being perfect for what I need from a desktop.
