Topic: WM and DE

Glad to see that this is a "Window Manager - Desktop Edition" thread now. It actually makes more sense with #! Statler as it comes in two flavours:

#! Statler Xfce, and
#! Statler OpenBox

Now what we need are Xfce resources that can be stickied like OB has.
Someone who is good at wiki pages could start a #! Xfce wiki, I'm saying that because I have no idea how and I use OB

Welcome Xfce'ers to the world of Crunchbang - that would be corenominal and Omns I think for a BIG two.

I think you'll find that corenominal has returned to the dark side lol

YES! - Oh, I mean ... Really?  lol

Is there a way to have Xfce and Openbox using the same /home - logout switch sessions and back with the other WM?

Re: WM and DE

As long as they're installed in the same system they will use the same /home. I can't think of why they wouldn't.

P.S. I made the Xfce resources thread:

Well the trick is not wanting the whole Xfce4 desktop but just the stuff that corenominal had but in Xfce Statler.

I know I can add Xfce Desktop and run it by switching sessions but I would prefer the Statler setup, not for me but for the other user here.

That was very nice of you to start that, I think I may still have some Xfce stuff in my million bookmarks.  I'll look when I get home.

Re: WM and DE

I think Statler does include the whole xfce4. If you want the config files though, I think you have to get it directly from Statler or get someone else to grab the config files.

I recall seeing a comparison list someplace and that Statler OpenBox has a lot of the Xfce stuff installed, bit not the other way around.  I will have to go looking for that and see if I can start the Xfce menus in a separate session.  It is not a high priority.

Hmmm, maybe the config files should be a seperate download at the #! repos:

OB-Config.deb - All of the default Crunchbang Openbox configuration files.

Xfce-Config.deb - All of the default Crunchbang Xfce4 configuration files.

But what I know about putting a disto together is found between the quotes: "    "

Yes, currently Openbox Alpha 1 contains both the Xfce and Openbox configs. I believe that corenominal is looking at a way to easily add the necessary apps and configs to either release. I'm not sure if this will be available for the next alpha.

At the moment, links to the default packages in both versions can be found here http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/70749/#p70749

From what I can see you would  add 'xorg xfce4 xfce4-terminal xfce4-screenshooter xfce4-notes' to the Openbox release and you should then be good to go with a dual login setup:)

Is dual login the same as "logout - change session - login" without the "reboot" that is harder on hardware

What the!!!!

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

[sudo] password for sector11:
E: Invalid operation xorg

I have xorg but why would that happen?

Re: WM and DE

The command is sudo apt-get install ...

Yes.

Also, you don't need to install xorg. As you've noted it's already there. Just install the xfce packages.

I can hear you snickering in the background.  That is not nice you know. lol

{red faced} sad

How the heck did I miss that!

Also those two lists .... Xfce and OpenBox for Statler, both Xfce and Openbox:

## Printing
##cups cups-pdf system-config-printer

Now I know why my printer isn't working.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!  lol

hi there corenominal, you non-printer using guy you!  smile

OK, I'll try that ... with "install" this time  smile

DUH!!!!

Re: WM and DE

@ anonymous and omns

It worked! That list you gave me:

sudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-terminal xfce4-screenshooter xfce4-notes

... installed a lot more, with dependencies.  I logged out, and changed sessions in the "login" screen and there it was "Xfce session".

The setup is 100% #! Statler with the right-click Xfce4 Menus, tint2 on the bottom and the default conky firing up, just like the LiveCD.

It felt weird after so long of using OpenBox but it is definitely a good idea to have both.

So I now have #! Statler Openbox and Xfce4 here.

I hope corenominal changes his mind about the config files in OpenBox on the next Alpha.  Or at least making a .deb of the config files for Xfce4 and OpenBox available in the Statler repos.

I see it as a great draw for people to be able to "switch" between the two.  And my root partition is only 29% full (18 GB)  Not to shabby at all.

I will be leaving "the dark side" as the default though.

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate your help.
