@corenominal - I just noticed the new "Rules" link at the top of the page. It seems too sparse compared to the rules of any other forum though.

for me: the less rules, the better.

after all, we are the minimalist distro, right?

anyway, if I want to read the forum, I just read it. If I want to post, I register, then post. I think it would not not make much sense to register without posting after. after all, besides being able to post there are not many benefits in registering, like newsletters or the like (thank god! got enough mailinglists to read). So I don't see why this should be a problem. 7 days still is a lot of time.

but good work on keeping the spam out..  I seldomly saw spam here on the forum. maybe 2-3 times, and I pass by quite regularly. and props for the great forum and community. I never was a big forum-poster, but here it is quite nice  and ofcourse I just fit perfectly here with all the cool people around.. cool

I had not noticed that new link, it must have appeared when I edited the rules page, doh! Looking at it now, it does look a little sparse. I am open to suggestions as to what we should put on it, but at the same time, I would not like to introduce any rules for the sake of populating that page. smile

Re: Forum clean-up and new registration policy

Since there is no relevant section wich is unreadable for the non-registered ones, I don't see a reason for keeping read-only and reserve-mah-nick accs. I know other boards wich prone inactive users after six months, regardless of their postcount. No objections here big_smile

I'm so meta, even this acronym

It would be nice to put a reminder about not cross-posting. If a person accidently posts in the wrong forum, they should ask a mod to move it (either by PM or reporting their own post).

Also if a person's thread does not get any responses, they should consider bumping the thread (and maybe adding new info) instead of creating a new one.

BTW if you wish to contact me, send me an e-mail instead of a PM.

@ corenominal

Just out of curiosity ... since you have recently been 'weeding' out the non-posters (lurkers) ... where does the Forums census stand now?

I have modified the rules to include your suggestions, thank you. I hope they are okay? smile

Ah yes - suggestions, reminders, advice... might not hurt to have a few of those even if there aren't all that many really heavy duty strict rules. smile

Re: Forum clean-up and new registration policy

After all is said and done, it appears that the spam problem has been licked...for now. We users should be vigilant and report spammers when they are noticed.

Nice work mods and admin smile

one suggestion would be to disallow links in posts and in signatures till the user has made a minimum number of posts

Re: Forum clean-up and new registration policy

Hi Guys. Just popped in to say hello. The idea of asking that one should post something regularly seems sensible. Several sites I log into seem to go quiet for a long time with only one or two of us trying to keep it alive!
I came across `Crunchbang` from a DVD on a old copy of LXF I found on a local market stall. Been playling around with assorted distros on an old HP/Compaq laptop. Only disros that seem to work faultlessly (Famous last words) are the XFCE version of LinuxMint and Crunchbang (9.04)

Being a newby to Linux. the bonus of Crunchbang  working out-of-the-box,  with all the media codecs  installed means I can just get on and do stuff  without spending many happy hours downloading the bits I need, and then trying to get it to work. Congrats to all involved.

In an effort to clean-up our forums and remove spam, I have now removed over a 2000 user accounts. Roughly half of these accounts were unverified. The others were all verified, but with 0 post counts. If any registered lurkers have had their accounts deleted, I apologise. Please feel free to re-register, but I ask that you consider making at least 1 post, possibly in the "Introductions" forum.

Today's account deletions will form part of a new registration policy, whereby newly registered users will be given 1 week to make at least 1 post. Any accounts which have not met this condition, will be deleted.

I am sorry to have to introduce these new measures, but as our forums grow, I think it is important to protect them and keep them clean for our registered and active members. smile

If you have any comments about this, please feel free to share them. smile

That's cool. Like that since there's the matter of servers and hard drive space etc.

Re: Forum clean-up and new registration policy

can we have a rule about posts written as if the poster was talking like a pirate?

such as: all posts must be written as if the poster was talking like a pirate?  AArrgh?

It's hard to find something if you don't know what you're looking for.
I have a blog, it's mostly about conky and lua stuff... go here.
