Topic: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Any news?  I'm curious what the team has planned and theres been 0 blog posts since the alpha 2 announcement.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

The time between Alpha 1 to Alpha 2 was over 3 months.

Alpha 2 is less than a month old.

Still plenty of time to test and find bugs. smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Since Statler is based on Debian Squeeze, there probably won't be a beta until after Squeeze is "frozen" and transitions from testing to stable.  This is likely to happen on the Debian development timetable:  "When it's ready." cool

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Interesting, I've been on the debian stable track for some years with ubuntu lts releases so this is a bit new to me.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Also, "the team" is pretty much just corenomial.
If i recall correctly, the hopes are Statler will be finished sometime around when Squeeze goes stable. That said, it's not being pushed for that exactly, so if it takes longer, no big deal, when its ready it's ready.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Imo, since Statler's core is mostly going to be the same, it doesn't really matter which version you install. You can just uninstall the programs you don't need and install the ones you do. So if it works for you, why not install it? smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

I also don't see the big fuss about the new version. It is mostly re-branded Debian with different apps. Its unlikely to bring anything revolutionary as Ubuntu/Fedora do each release.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Sure there's nothing stopping anyone from putting together their own Debian remix with  their choice of apps, configuration, themes...
(Likewise with Ubuntu, though you have more dependencies tying things together.)

Agreed, there is no original software in Crunchbang, apart from some useful scripts, but I find the total package very close to perfect for my needs.

As always with Linux, you have the choice... smile

#! is great, no criticism from me, I just don't understand the urge to "get the next version" in this scenario.

I think it could be that some users are waiting for a stable release to use on their own computers. If thats the case, then people would be interested in the progression from alpha to beta to release.
Also, I'm always looking forward to the next version of crunchbang. Some of the applications corenomial includes i might not have been aware of, or any new scripts which are always so cool. The new themes are very nice too.

#! 9.04 will reach its "end of life" in October, followed by 8.04 in April 2011. So my concern is that, if Squeeze gets delayed too much, there will be a window of time in which there is no stable, supported #! release. That would be unfortunate IMHO. sad But time will tell. smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

My main reason for wanting a "stable" version is that I want to make #!10 my main os.  I'm tired of ubuntu and don't feel like building my own debian from scratch.  #!10 and the LXDE debian package are my two candidates.  However, I prefer OB and enjoy the philosophy and community behind #!.  I can deal with small bugs and hiccups, I just can't afford a huge stoppage bug on a main machine.  To me "Beta" just sounds more stable and something that can be used in a main OS.  Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just the way I see it.

Uh no. Ubuntu customarily builds from either the unstable or testing code branches, I can't remember which off the top of my head. As far as I know, the Ubuntu project has never based a release on Debian stable. Current Debian stable is Lenny, which was released just last year. It's version 5.0. Debian was founded in 1993. You can do the math on how often they do stable releases. And you can see why folks are concerned that v6.0 might well take longer to release than the Debian project hopes for. It would be a truly astonishing degree of speed.

#! is planning to track Debian squeeze. This is the current testing release, and it will become Debian 6.0 when it takes over as stable.

It's more than a little weird if you're used to the Ubuntu or Fedora release systems.

What I'd recommend doing is set up a live image and poke around at the current alpha. After you've gotten more comfortable, it's sane to try a "virtual machine" install. When you're confident your box is stable, you can install Statler or squeeze.

If stability is your #1 concern, you can start using the stable, Ubuntu 9.04-based CrunchBang today: http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/downloads

And of course there is CrunchBang 8.04, based on the super-stable Ubuntu Hardy Heron. smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Stability is a concern as it is my main system.  But I'm tired of ubuntu and want to move to a debian based distro.

My mistake on the first one.  I've been running OB ontop of my ubuntu 9.10 install and using all the apps in statler.  I've also been running statler in vmware for sometime and that's what makes me eager to commit full time on my main system.

Well... Statler Alpha 2 has a few bugs, but many of us are using it as an everyday operating system. So it is good to be cautious, but no need to be scared. Personally I feel any branch of Debian is more stable than Ubuntu. smile

One suggestion I'll make is to install Statler as a dual boot (or in a virtual machine) so you can start to familiarize yourself with the Debian way of doing things. I think you'll find it's an easy transition. (edit I see you already are doing this!)

Also since you are an experienced Openbox user, have you considered Debian Stable (Lenny) plus Openbox?

We are months from a final Statler release. If you want to stay on top of things, you can sign up for the Debian development mailing list to follow the progress of Squeeze from testing to stable.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

I have installed Lenny and OB in a vm and been happy with it.  But I just like the way #! is, the philosophy, community, and setup scripts.  Example is the DropBox setup was nice and automated I didnt have to do it by hand

Me too! smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Recently, Debian 6 Squeeze went into the freeze stage of it's development.
Squeeze should be released as the next 'stable' release around the end of the year.  Or early next year.

#!Crunchbang Statler's Alpha 2 release is a big hit.

What's next ... before Squeeze is released? (not that far away) Another Alpha (3) or a Beta ... or just 'ride the freeze out'

I for one, am excited about what's coming in #!Crunchbang and Debian.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

Talking from an XFCE install here. There are some small hick-ups and ugly hacks in this distribution, but I guess corenominal has to re-implement the wheel for XFCE. Apart from these few amenities with the startup script, there is nothing to be worried about. Never had a crash, just once in a while have to start conky manually (or possibly set the delay in autostart.sh a bit longer).

Since corenominal knows his way around openbox like few others, I would install the alpha 2 without any reservations on my main desktop machine. Heck, I never boot anything else than the XFCE version!

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

if i remember correctly corenominal already considered branding alpha 2 as beta but refused to do so because of... well, i can't find this posting anymore... smile

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

I've been overseas in a land far far away for more than 24 months. I have only one weapon and that weapon is a x60s. I've been using Statler since Alpha 1 came out without any fears whatsoever, and it has performed brilliantly. Alpha 2 is great and I run the liquorix kernel.

Everything works great.

Linux jjc 2.6.35-2.dmz.1-liquorix-686 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Sun Aug 15 00:44:01 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

to the guy above Shai worrying about using statler alpha as his main OS. Dude, take a chance I don't think you'll regret it. Althought Crunchbang may make your computer go CRUNCH BANG!!

Peace,

Found it:

So, I thought it might be good to give a little progress report on the next Statler build, alpha 2. Firstly, yes, it will be named "alpha 2". I have considered moving straight from alpha 1 to beta 1, but in all honesty, there are still plenty of problems/issues to overcome, and besides, Squeeze is still far from the "Stable" tag. Also, if the first alpha release is anything to go by, I think another alpha release will only help to improve the final build.

Re: Any news on Alpha 3 or Beta 1?

I just did a fresh install of Statler a2 to try to figure out what kept breaking totem-mozilla (turned out it was mozplugger, which I was using as a workaround for not having acroread...) and before I installed any additional packages, I noticed there were over 300 packages to update/add in the basic dist-upgrade.  Even if we aren't expecting a Statler a3 any time soon, maybe we should at least have Dr. Bunsen cook up a Statler a2.01?
