Topic: Scanners; the bane of my Linux life

There's only one reason why I haven't completely ditched Windows. My 7 year-old flintlock of a HP Scanjet 4870C.

I've tried more than a few different Linux distro's over the years, and Xsane never has, and never will support this device. I use it once a month to make an image of the rent and utility check - that's it. But it works with Windows, and just as your mother told you it was a sin to waste food, I can't bring myself to throw away a good machine.

But today, like a wounded buffalo calling out to the rest of the herd, it made the "I'm dying here" crunch at the end of the scan cycle! [I don't know if buffaloes cry out to the rest of the herd - just something say on the Discovery channel]

So, can anyone recommend a good scanner, or multi-function machine, that runs well under CrunchBang? hmm

If you want a multifunction, I can vouch for the Brother MFC-240C.

My HP Deskjet F4280 works fine with both CrunchBang 9.04 and Statler a2.  You may need to add the hplip package; I seem to recall I couldn't get the scanner to work with just hpijs and cups.

HP Photosmart C4780, also wireless connection is working (didn't test scanner that way yet).

Re: Scanners; the bane of my Linux life

I have a Canon Pixma MP970 attached to my network and am able to scan over the network without any modifications. I simply use the following command:

scanimage --resolution 150 --device-name pixma:MP970_10.0.1.213

Printing to it is a bit harder as there are no drivers for this model, but I have it attached to a MacBook which acts as a print server. Printing to it via the Mac works great.

Re: Scanners; the bane of my Linux life

The inexpensive CanoScan Lide 25 flatbed scanner has worked without any problems out-of-the-box on Ubuntu, Debian and CrunchBang. Also I use the scanimage command, e.g. as follows:

scanimage --resolution 300 -x 215 -y 297 > scannedimage && convert scannedimage -rotate 90 scannedimage.jpg

"Convert" is one of ImageMagick's many commands.

Scanimage has many scanner specific commands. I haven't tried the scanner's "quick buttons" (or whatever they're called), even though they should work, too. I have not been able to scan over the home network via SSH, but I guess that is the only negative remark I can make.

I never use smilies, but there are exceptions that prove the rule wink

Hi,
I use a HP C3100 on CB (904) as scanner and printer and it has worked on every linux I've tried fine.

I don't know if they are still available but I've never had a problem with HP printers (wouldn't touch HP for anything else tho!)

Just because someone doesn‘t love you the way you want them to, doesn‘t mean they don‘t love you with all they have.
