I'll go out on a limb here and say - where do you think thr flavour comes from.  big_smile

That and the Brooklyn Bridge for $229.50

here's coffee flavour: Coffeesearch

And the first paragraph in case your like me and can't see it for the Google Ad! (I'm not going there)

Coffee Flavor

Coffee flavor is a term that encompasses all of the other coffee cupping parameters.  It is an overall evaluation of the coffee taste.  The SCAA created a coffee flavor wheel, which is used as a helpful guide during coffee cupping.  The full poster is in color and includes another wheel to describe flavor and aroma taints.

Re: Coffee is a food group

Without re-reading all these coffee posts I can't recall anyone mentioning coffee and chicory mixed: ala Louisiana.  I occasionally like it and almost bought some at market this morning.  SO -- anyone else out there care for chicory in their coffee?  and are the any local variants of this [adding to or used in place of coffee] elsewhere around the world?

Hi buddy,

Yea, I had a coffee and chicory mix years ago.  Apparently it was when the price of coffee started to climb in Canada so the "mix" came out to help keep the cost down.  Became rather popular, so because of the demand the price went up.  Go figure.

It's a nice blend I enjoyed the taste very much.

Hey, that's pretty neat ... a lot of work, I followed the link for the "Popcore Roaster" as well.  Now that looks fun as well.

Popcorn Popper as Coffee Roaster

Don't know if they have those here though.

sniff.  sniff.

I thought I smelled coffee when I came to the forums but never thought it would be hidden back here

Two questions I always ask when I smell coffee.  1.  Is it fresh?  2.  Is it strong?  big_smile

Another question  occurs.  Is anyone here?

First and last questions answered because I'm here - and the coffee has to be fresh, a full pot doesn't last long enough around me to go stale.  And by the time you go for your second cuppa you'll have to wait as the pot will be brewing! lol

Now to your second question - OH YES!!!!!!!!!  tongue

Re: Coffee is a food group

When you guys and gals make coffee, what ratio of coffee to water do you use?

I tend to do 3 spoons (the one that comes with the coffee) for 4 cups of water.

Re: Coffee is a food group

In my house in Barcelona we use a traditional coffee machine which gets heated on the gas cooker:

http://icuban.com/food/images/cuban_coffee_maker.jpg

So it is about 1/3 ratio of coffee to water.

Re: Coffee is a food group

Tastes change. Small children naturally prefer sweeter things - why do you think they're always begging for sweets and chocolate? Brussel sprouts is the main childhood food dislike that seems to change as the child grows up I think. I hated brussel sprouts when I was younger but I can eat them now.

I would guess that it depends on the coffee used and the method.  I like a really strong coffee, not the brown dishwater some places call coffee.

I use a French Press at home, and usually follow fairly close to CoffeeGeeks guide, as mine makes two mugs of coffee.  However if I am drinking it alone I add an extra scoop of grinds, and let it sit 4 to 5 minutes before "plunging".  smile

I'm not a hardcore coffee drinker. Just pre-ground coffee and a normal coffee machine.

I usually buy whatever coffees they sell at the Coffee Shop across the street.

They grind their own beans at the time the coffee is made and they serve several different blends.

tongue  I never make coffee at home.

Re: Coffee is a food group

FRANKENCOFFEE ??

Did you know that genetically modified coffee has been available since 1999?
And that a Japanese company began growing decaffeinated coffee trees in 2003?

Would "you" drink genetically modified coffee ???

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/c … ation.html
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/b … d=obinsite

The Food & Drug Administration considers this week whether to allow the production of genetically modified salmon, which if it is allowed would not be labeled as such. It would be the first genetically altered 'animal' allowed as food in the U.S.

Engineered crops have been permitted -- and not labeled -- for years, including genetically modified coffee.

In 1999, the University of Hawaii was granted a U.S. patent on coffee that's genetically altered to stop growing just short of maturity so that berries are at the same stage when they are picked, The Independent in London reported. The coffee is then ripened by a chemical spray.

Integrated Coffee Technologies in Hawaii markets that coffee and engineered coffee trees to yield caffeine-free beans. It was sold this summer by Pacific Land & Coffee, which has been hemorrhaging cash. Integrated Coffee and Coscina Brothers Coffee were bought by former officers and directors for $110,000.

Kona growers and others are concerned about Integrated Coffee's engineering, and many including PCC Natural Markets in Seattle see the altered coffee as a threat to small farmers. In 2008, the Hawaii County Council banned genetically modified coffee on the big island, but the legislature rejected a state-wide ban.

Integrated Coffee appears to have been behind the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan, which created the first decaffeinated coffee trees in 2003, the BBC reported.

In 2004, vandals destroyed a genetically altered coffee crop in French Guiana, after researchers there determined that they had found a way to protect crops from moth larvae. (But had they tried disrupting moth sex first?)

And in 2006, Nestle patented another form of genetically modified coffee in Europe. It altered the beans to make its instant coffee more soluble.

Are you sure they aren't serving FRANKENCOFFEE?

Mind you read the labels of most of the stuff we eat and it's surprising we don't glow in the dark.

Frankencoffee?  Talk like that is a good way to scare off all the new guystongue  However if either of you think that the coffee hackers have left that good Guatemalan coffee alone then I'll stick with that morning, noon and night.  big_smile

I made the comment about reading the labels ... BUT I stopped doing that a LONG time ago.  It starts with food labels, and in the end one becomes afraid to go outside, to eat, to breath.

No matter what is happening I have to live in this world.  I tend to do so in blissful ignorance, not total, there are some things a person must become aware of.  But if by law they don't have to tell me that the veggies I eat are "genetically engineered", I think that should be outlawed, why read the label?  It is already lying "by omission".  Nuff said!

Can I have another cuppa please!

Re: Coffee is a food group

That coffee shop/store i was talking about a while back "DoubleShot" had a free opera preview the other night and free coffee.  Best coffee shop experience I've had yet.  That coffee they sell there is the best I've ever had and that's coming from someone who's lived in Colombia.  I reccomend ordering some off thier site and subscribing to the dude's podcast.  He really knows his stuff about the brew.

I use a generic grinder and a French press.  Occasionally I have to make some expresso.

However, like you Sector11, I have become a mate drinker.  It's so green and good.  I feel like I am drinking the rain forest.

I read that article about a month ago.

No only do I not want 'cat-poo' coffee ... but, why would I pay an arm and a leg for some?
