Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Hell, Debian Experimental is still stable (or at least more stable then Ubuntu)

@Digit: Good to see you around here again...and that you've still got your adventurous nose stuck deep into the exotic stuff. I wish I had more time to participate in some time-consuming risk taking in the linux garden, but all play and no work makes jack a hungry boy.
@jinnstar: If I were you I wouldn't worry too much about slipping off-topic in this thread...I started out way back there with tongue stuck deeply into cheek and it's been like that ever since...
@vrkalak: Wow. Your inspired rant almost gave me a little distro-boner again, but I'm enjoying running in tame mode these days havin' a good time with adcomp's madbox...very tasty, solid and quick little crunchified distro. I'll probably stick with it until Greg over at geekmind puts some varnish on his debian version of remastersys so I can blow reliable iso's in Statler.

Cheers! big_smile

While you do have the Debian repros pointing toward 'unstable' . . . you still have the #!Statler repros at the top of the sources.list

I would think this qualifies for #!Statler 'unstable' ... although, both #! and Sid are both considered to be quite stable, in their own right.

I have to agree with vrkalak and would like to add my 2¢ worth.

With #! 9.04.01 (and earlier versions) people didn't ask (I think) is this #! or Ubuntu?  You downloaded from the#! site and have the #! repo in your list - You are using CrunchBang.

The fact that Debian has three repos to choose from: Lenny (stable), Squeeze (testing) and Sid (unstable) doesn't matter.

In fact you have 6 options there.

You could use /lenny/ or /squeeze/ or /sid/ to stay with the Debian "named" versions ... OR ... go rolling:

/stable/ or /testing/ or /unstable/

If you choose /stable/ your software will always be dated.  solid

Put /testing/ and your software changes more often as 'unstable' adds updated software to the testing world. might break

And pop /testing/ in there and you have fresh stuff coming at you all the time. breakable

But as long as you keep the #! repos - you're a CrunchBanger.  (my 2¢)

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Can someone recommend me a linux distro? I missed Linux and tried Debian; couldn't stand the outdated software, Debian Sid; broke very easily, Linux Mint; crashes like hell b/c it's based on Ubuntu. I'd use CB but I don't like how it's organized and when I tried to install Swiftfox I could only start it from the terminal. I figured I'd ask here since everyone here has tried a broad amount of operating systems, here are my needs:

-Light
-Light WM (Xfce, e17, No *boxes and not LXDE, they don't work on my computer.)
-Compatible with *deb
-SLiM login

It's a shame you don't like #! Statler Xfce - I think that's a great layout ... did you know you can add the Xfce panels just like other distros?  Please don't ask "me" how I us OpenBox.

Other than that, I'd suggest you check out DistroWatch and search for Xfce distros or e17 distros.  You know your equipment best.

Have you looked at DreamLinux?  They say it supports almost everything out of the box.

I actually have a live CD with DL on it from LFM, maybe I'll try it.

edit: going to download the DL4 Beta b/c I've got a horrible testing addiction.

Edit: Dream Linux 4b6 has sound and repository issues. The sound doesn't work and half of the repos don't work so I'll be trying Frugalware next. It's based on Slackware and is extremely up to date (Firefox and Amarok being some of these!) plus it's got like 7 different WM options!

Don't know about Frugalware but for Zenwalk I can also say ist pretty awesome!
I just recently installed the Openbox Edition and I'm more than pleased with it. smile
My only gripe would be that some of the programs it comes with I don't really care much for i.e. Totem or Brasero and getting vlc to work was a little bit of work for me.
I ended up using a slackware package for it and now it works fine!

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) was the last i checked out, still got it (and using it) in virtualbox just now.   still... i'll like it better when there's a 64bit version and version with something lighter than the bloat of gnome.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

I hope I came to the proper place smile

Does anyone know of a good medicine to stop distro-hopping?

I find it somehow impossible not to try any new CD with Linux I can get my hands on. And so I find myself constantly installing, updating, playing for a few days and dumping it only to look for something new. And so the circle continues. Since I found #! it became the most frequent distro on my hard drive (I don't like virtual machines).

Seriously, it gives me everything I want and even more, but my itchy fingers couldn't wait and I had to change the source file to point to Sid cool and as for now everything seems to work well. But already my eyes are on PCLinuxOS and aptosid and I have to struggle with myself not to download the CDs. And yes, I tried Arch and FreeBSD, but they did not stop me from looking.

So, what can I do? Should I somehow password protect the HD and forget the password?
Hope for a good advice.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

There is the new Linux Mint Debian Edition . . . newly based on Debian testing.

And the new re-loaded version of Archbang . . . based on Arch/Linux with Openbox.

We needs 'therapy'

I think I'll be installing VirtualBox my machine to test new distro's on (virtual nicotine patch) hopefully that will work big_smile

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

@bodek: go and get your click, drool over it, hop on....but in the end you will end up at #! Good Luck in search of the lost distro.

#!, all else is but a shadow!

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

thank you all,
I agree that I need therapy big_smile but meantime will try to install a second HD for all the hopping, hoping that the bad habit will go away lol

1. A few whacks with a sledge hammer to your computer would do!, or
2. install Windows - you'll be so busy updating and rebooting and installing virus protection database updates, malware database updates and Service Packs, defragging the HD, cleaning out the registry  that you won't have time to think about "Distro Hopping"

bodek wrote:

Hope for a good advice.

Keep #! on two partitions, 1 for /root and 1 for /home and leave a few partitions empty and have at it with the Hopping and duel booting.

There is no cure! All the free time you have if you ignore option 2 above has to be filled up with something to do.  roll

But there is alway "conky" now that's addictive!

Is Ubuntu sinking? - Is "#!" infecting other distros?

Seems everyone is following corenominal's lead in one way or another.

I honestly believe I'm a #!'er for life.  The fact that I'm fast approaching the "twilight years" may have an affect on that decision as well. roll

what exactly would you call twilight years? is that in refference to your age or years of being a distro hopper?  Just curious

Age ... {sigh}  ... still a kid at heart though.  cool

I counted CD's the other day (different distros) - 11

I should make coffee coasters out of them.  They are CD-R's so not good for much else.  smile

Dude, I hear your pain man.:(  It's like a freaking addiction man! I had a party at my home last night but had to sneak away from them only to install another distro! This "Distro-Spirits" have got me dude!

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

OK I'm back at DHA.  I'm well off the wagon.  I've installed about 10 different distros in the last month.  I was happy for a while, but I was led astray again by slackware 13.1, now i'm hopping about like a madman again.   The annoying thing for me is that I find myself trying the same distros over and over again to see how the new version is.  I think i've installed openSUSE four times now, and hated it every time.

I can't even seem to decide if I like minimal DE's or complex ones, *box or KDE, Slackware or SUSE.  You'd have thought I at least had an idea by now!
