Topic: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

Hi all,

My post before where I had issues with the USB install was fixed with a simple reformat of the USB drive, suggested by another poster.  Thanks for the tip!

Now that I have Cruncheee installed on my Asus Eee PC 900A, I chose a large single partition with no swap partition.  After verifying with the installer that I did not want swap, I notice that Conky is displaying a 0 / 249.92 of swap space.  How can I disable the swap entirely?

Thanks so much!

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

Run:

sudo gparted

Right click the swap > Swapoff

Optionally delete it and resize.

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

I just checked gparted and there is no swap partition.  Do you think it's just a Conky display error, or is there something else going on?

Thanks!

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

probably just a conky error or something, if it does not show in the gparted list, then there is no swap...

I make chaos

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

remove the swap section from conkyrc now, I suggest

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

take a look here it's a new feature of Ubuntu 8.10.

Compcache provides a possibility of using parts of the memory as virtual compressed swapdevice. We want to include this functionality in Ubuntu Intrepid to lower memory requirements in various setups.

I have left it running on my Dell mini 9 with no problems.

Also take a look at

Haven't figure out how much it does.

Btw, you can also save your flash by changing fstab.

I haven't done this yet, just the swap (1st link).

Take a look at this thread:

I had the same issue, and know how to turn it off. however, I'm still not sure how to permanently remove it from my system sad
Eh, it hasn't bothered me enough...

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

Thanks for the replies!  I've done the swappiness trick, but the fstab one already has relatime, which I think is fine.  It sounds like Compcache actually uses your RAM for some sort of compressed swap?  Am I reading that right?  If so, maybe it doesn't need to be removed, as it's not using the SSD.  Though, I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about!  Any clarifications? smile

I also think that's all that you need to do.

Question: Did you delete your previous post about this? If so, I recommend that you don't do that in the future. It's better to mark the post as solved and post some info on what you did to solve it so that the next person who runs into that issue can learn from your experience.

Re: Disabling Swap on Cruncheee

Check out Pelago's excellent article "How to make Ubuntu Linux run faster on a laptop".  Since I run #! 9.04.01 on a Dell Mini 9, I reduced my SSD swappiness to 10, added Preload and BUM per this most excellent article.
