Topic: conky covers other windows

hi there,

I've had my conky and desktop set up quite nicely and all worked fine. (thanks to all those conky config posts i was able to cherry pick my favorite things...)
but just recently, that is as of yesterday, on every system start my conky starts in a way that it is always on top covering every window beneath.  after manually restarting conky it works fine most of the time, though!

my config:

at the same time i'm using a transparancy script for terminator posted somewhere here in the forum.
the whole issue started after i added "xpad" to the autostart.sh .... but the problem remains even after i've removed the line.  even though i wouldn't have thought that simply adding another program to autostart could do that to you.

any ideas? thanks for the input.

Re: conky covers other windows

try the rc.xml and tell it to stay in the background... like in the terminator in the background topic... see if that works... maybe it's a ugly workaround that can be fixed in a better way, but you could check if it works...

I make chaos

Re: conky covers other windows

i don't really get what you mean, i'm afraid.
i just want it to go back to normal. i just don't understand what changed.

Uncomment this line:

#own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
All in an effort to learn...
Delves deeper into code...

didn't really work for me. just caused conky to totally disappear at random intervals.

i added a 5 sec sleep intervall before the conky start and that seemed to do the trick. now i can even have xpad launch after it.  don't know if that missing sleep was really the problem as with other people it seemes not necessary. however, for now it seems to work.

maybe somewhen has an idea as to how this works....

but i have to say again, this is a really nice fast helping community. thanks for that.

Re: conky covers other windows

putting the sleep in worked for me too, something like

sleep 5 && conky

Sounds great, but could you please be more specific? What is the exact code needed and where exactly to put it? Thank you. smile

Re: conky covers other windows

Look in your autostart.sh file for this line:

conky -q &

and change it to:

(sleep 5s && conky) &
Note: ** Please read before posting **

BTW if you wish to contact me, send me an e-mail instead of a PM.

Thank you. smile

Re: conky covers other windows

Thank you.

(sleep 2s && conky -q) &

worked out to me.
