I have crunchbang installed on a IBM thinkpad 600e 192MB circa 1998, so I envy you.  Before #! I had the fluxbox version of Mint installed.  I prefer crunchbang--I don't think the Mint fluxbox edition is using Intrepid yet.  Plus I think openbox has advantages over fluxbox.  Unfortunately one of my kids stepped on it and the HDD seems busted-it groans when I boot it.  Dang--I love that thinkpad.

Thanks for all your comments.  I think I'll take arpinux's suggestion and use both at once to see which one I favor.  But I'll also look at Tint2 + Trayer + Netwmpager as choops and hanna suggest.  Thanks again!

Which do you prefer--pypanel or lxpanel?  Or something else?  I'm trying to decide.

I have crunchbang running on both a 701 and a 900.  The 900 I bought last week at Target for $249--only 512MB RAM and 4GB SSD for \ ext2 partition, but I have a 8GB SD card for \home ext2 partition--no swap.  I use vanilla crunchbang--not cruncheee--but have no reason to doubt the latter.  I've tried many distros on my 701, and crunchbang is the best-suited to the eeepc.

I've never been a Ubuntu/Kubuntu fan but I am becoming more impressed with #! CrunchBang.  Maybe I'll have to take another look at the newer version of Ubuntu.

Hey... The most annoying thing about Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu (and Crunchbang by unfortunate inheritence) is the lack of root login and the insipid use of sudo.  Just let me login as root, please.  But as long as Crunchbang is a Ubuntu derivative, and not a Debian derivative, I'll adjust.

@machina:  I have #! running on my 192mb ram antique IBM Thinkpad 600e.  Conky shows that used RAM usually stays below 100mb, unless I multitask.  Let us know if you have success on your 128mb antique.  The trickiest part may be getting the Crunchbang/Ubuntu installer to run on 128mb.

Hi Mecharuva,
I have a EeePC 701.  I've never tried UNetBootIn, but I've had success with a script called isotostick.sh, which is described here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Insta … omUSBStick

Most of the times I've had failed installs have been situations where there has been contention for limited power resources.  You may want to unplug any attached printers, other USB devices, or secondary monitors to make sure that sufficient power is delivered to the installation drive.  Good luck.

Great distro for the eeepc.

I installed #! 8.10.01 on my eee 701 yesterday.  Having just learned of it now, I am not using the array.org kernel,   To get wireless working I blacklisted ath_pci and loaded ath5k from Ubuntu backports, as explained here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Fixes

I installed #! on my eeepc 701 yesterday.  For the 701 I had to get ath5k madwifi driver from Ubuntu backports and blacklist ath_pci driver.

Excellent, excellent distro, so far.
