IMHO Swiftox is a good and fast alternative to firefox, keeping as much as possible of the great plugins from Firefox.

Have you tried booting a LiveCD and deleting the files from there?

That's a good idea.. I'll try that now.

Hi,

I tried backing up with remastersys yesterday and everything went just fined... I've just didn't calculate that I needed >7GB free space..

I terminated the process, but the image-file and whatsoever didn't get deleted, so I tried to delete the files manually. If I did so Linux freezes.. and doesn't respond to any I/O interactions anymore. I couldn''t even restart the X-Server. So I restart manually.
At reboot the archives, which I've deleted manually were 'gone', _but_ my HD was still full! Just as if I didn't delete it.

I need to get the free space again.. any advices are welcome.

I saved the files in /root/backup, and now there's no mure such file, as I've already mentioned. Strange to me..

hello kmachine,

I think you must "explain" to your own "Python from source" where It can find pygtk module ...  ( /usr/lib/python-support/python-gtk2  ? )

Thanks... that was the problem. I've recompiled it and it worked.

Uninstall and reinstall Rhythmbox?

sudo apt-get purge rhythmbox
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

Ok this is exactly what I've done, but it keeps showing the same error..

May this be, because I've compiled Python from source and need some special development header?

Hello Forum,

I've finally upgraded to 9.04 from an existing 8.10 #! Ubuntu. But when I tried to put on some nice music with Rhythmbox I've received the follwowing message:

(rhythmbox:4118): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Could not import pygtk
ImportError: No module named pygtk
Segmentation fault

I've tried to "apt-get" the package "python-gtk2", but it's apparently already installed.

Need some help with this, please.

Hello Forum,

I've tried to install lxinput, but therefore I must update my software packages... Whenever trying to execute the following line:

sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 4E7CF744

... I get the following output: gpg

--ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 4E7CF744

and the program exits.

I don't know what the heck this has to do with the a "keyring"... Maybe you can explain to me, please?

Cheers,
Kenny

Not bad.. 4 options.

This option sounds most reasonable to me.

4th way: (recommended)

Back up your data, do a fresh install.

Thanks again,

Hello Forum,

As I've read just a moment ago that Crunchbang 9.04 has been released and I haven't found some instructions from upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 I'll ask straight-away.. So is there any script/instruction yet available?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

While using SSH to connect myself to my sisters's computer, I was wondering if there's no possibility chatting with her while I'm using SSH. As she doesn't know how to use the terminal(using "talk" or "write") and I hardly can convince her using it, I was searching for a program which would do the job, but after searching longer time I couldn't find any programs corresponding to my need.

Maybe anyone else knows a program?

Help me please

km

Good choice and nice goals!

There's plenty of documentation out there to get over the first months.

Hi,

For opening a port temporarily use, and should be only temporarily:

nc -lvp 5900

Why don't specify your search? After adding rule try:

netstat -ant | grep 5900

Sounds odd, but should be functioning.

I've started using GNU/Linux, because of a friend recommended me "Ubuntu". That time I've never heard about that name and thought of some African Food... So I obtained and installed it! (Notice that before GNU/Linux I only been using Windows).
When I've installed it (surprised how fast this happened), my notebook (an old Acer 2002 Series) ran about 3x faster than Windows (this may be because I installed all kind of crap... Notice that before Linux I've only been using Windows), but I was walking on unknown terrain and blended by its beauty. A lot of things weren't functioning, like my network card, Audio, etc., but luckily I'm not that kind of (80% of all Windows guys) guy, who get afraid when they encounter a problem and rather go the easy way... and that's about the time, where I fell in love with GNU/Linux...

This happened about 2 1/2 years ago and I didn't use Windows since 2 years on my own Desktop PCs. I vehemently refuse to install Windows on my own computer. It's not that I'm an OS-racist, and that I hate commercial products.. no! The Ubuntu(not GNU/Linux) leader(s) are the same money-greedy machines such as the ones from the Monopolist-Microsoft-concern,  but the great the difference is the community, which I've hardly found for Windows (but it does exist in some way), the "open-minded" developers; thanks to them I'm using only OpenSource and Free Software.

Here are some of the great things I love about GNU/Linux:

  • Using GNU/Linux, I rarely wasted a moment about Spyware, Viruses... never had to search an insecure firewall programm, because there was already a great one included (iptables).

  • I easily configured my own server with Apache and Co., which is as good as impossible with a Desktop Windows.

  • I'm much more productive in programming, don't wasting time with time-eating processes by using editors such as Vim (my favorite)

  • Never wasted hours again finding a crack for my OS (Notice that before GNU/Linux I've only been using Windows lol ]

The list continues..

Well, Windows may do as good as Linux in the above tasks, but never do better, calculating installation time + human effort + flexibility.

Of course GNU/Linux has its disadvantages, but who cares about them, if you have a flexible, simpl(e ,)y great OS?; and yes I'm a student. lol

9.04.01 is in development. I was hoping to get the release out on the same day as the Jaunty release, but unfortunately there have been a few hiccups. I have completed several test builds and I am now in the process of squashing a few obvious bugs. Hopefully there will be a release very soon.

hi root!

That sounds good. Would be nice if you'd list some of the new stuff/updates in 9.04 in a future newsletter!

If you are perfectly content with 8.04, then there is no reason to upgrade at all, apart from curiosity! wink

Well I'm actually very curious about the recencies in 9.04, that's why I'm asking!

Call me paranoid, or call me sane.  big_smile

Damn... That's why one should read the User License... I think you're perfectly sane. Thanks for the advice btw.

Hey guys,

I wanted to know if there are already plans of a CrunchBang Linux "Jaunty" Version? I couldn't find any articles relating to my question in the last newsletter, so I'll start.

and... I mean, is it really necessary to update to 9.04 if you're perfectly content with 8.04?

I enjoyed some of the stories in this topic, they're really interesting!

Well, CrunchBang Linux offers everything I wanted from a "dream" GNU/Linux-OS:

- Simplicity
- Speed
- Accessibility
- Flexibility

and I dare to say it's fulfilling those caracteristics perfectly!

After trying Distros like Xubuntu, Kubuntu (if, then only Kde 3.5), Fluxbuntu, Debian, etc... I actually knew what I wanted (See above).

Xmarks is a very good service for saving your bookmarks on any computer (at least I have made good experiences wink )

Positive Kbang!

It works out perfectly!!! I've tried out other tools like gtk-switch, but that's the same thing like lxappearance.

Saved my day I think wink lol Great reason for making a little python script maybe, altough it's basically just changing a single string.

Thanks a lot! And btw: I think that's a good tribute to the Wiki.

Hi Forum,

I'm having an issue changing my GTK-Themes. I've downloaded some dark themes and added them to /usr/share/themes and they actually appear in the list of `lxappearance', BUT the new ones I've added don't differ in any way! They all look the same (in the preview shot of `lxappearance' and even when I apply them).

I think there's a problem with the .gtkrc - files but I can't explain why.

The only dark theme working (which is gray) is the standard CrunchBang theme.

Can you please help me out?
