Thanks much, el koraco. That did the trick.

That doesn't seem to have done anything. Here's the output of the commands mentioned in that thread:

Hi friends,

I've just gotten a new Aspire One 522 (AMD C-50 chipset), finally loaded the new crunchbang iso, and it works near flawless. Except I have no audio.

alsamixer screenshot below:

http://i532.photobucket.com/albums/ee324/ruditsch/th_alsamixer_no_audio.png

If anyone has any ideas, I appreciate the help. Audio is one thing I have never had an issue with when running linux, so I have no clue what to do next.

Thank you

Hmm. Well i think it's definitely related to SD and USB write speeds. The card seems to be timing out before all the data is written. Also because smaller files do not produce the issue. Maybe exclusive to solid state devices as none of my USB harddrives have any problems.

To test; I just attempted to copy a 1.8gb video (~six the size of the ones I've been working with), and left the SD card in for about 15 minutes before trying to unmount it. It unmounted perfectly and the video is playing with no error.

So as a workaround, I can wait 5 - 10 minutes per file copied (avg file size is 300mb), unmount after each individual file, then mount and do the next one, wait, unmount, etc..

Not ideal, but better than not being able to copy at all.

This seems to only happen under crunchbang. I have a smaller eeepc with Mint9 in which I have not replicated the issue. I also have not had the problem at work using XP, or as I mentioned, my previous XP install on this computer.

I can only think it's some kind of software failure. (?) I wonder if it's worth reinstalling my entire system. Really don't want to do that if I can help it though.
Or is there some way to tell crunchbang to wait for longer periods before timing out an unmount request?

Hello friends,

I've had this problem for near 6 months now, and haven't been able to find any information about it (I don't like to impose on people by asking about such things).

When transferring videos to an SD card, or USB flash drive, I am unable to unmount afterwards. It asks that I please wait as the drive is busy or some such, and then waits about 30 seconds and then says it was unable to unmount:

"Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

My NTFS and FAT32 portable harddrives work fine, no problems. But all my (FAT32) sd cards and USB flash drives have this problem. I need to use FAT32 as I am using the SD cards in my phone.

The problem always occurs with files over 200mb, randomly with files 100mb - 200mb, and never with files below 100mb unless I have copied multiple files.

This is now becoming quite urgent for me as I am going to be spending ~40hours on a plane in a month or so, and I have spent weeks converting videos to suit my phone display, and now I cannot get them onto my phone.

I have tried transferring files directly to my phone via wifi and ftp transfer, but they always come out unreadable.

It's not a hardware problem, as in the past I just booted into my XP partition and everything worked fine. But now the XP install is corrupted, so it's not an option.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

I've never heard of anything like that.

For years I have been able to use my docs on both home (OpenOffice) and work computer (MS Word) using the Word 97/2000/XP file format.

Paying $65AU/month.
Data = 12gb on-peak, 24gb off-peak. If I go over the data limit I get speed limited to 56k for the rest of the month.

The stable version is 9.04, which is Ubuntu-based.

No that wasn't all of it. I don't know why I left half of it out. Must have been really tired.

Can someone help me out with my tint2? I think you can see it in the picture, the size of the systray and clock are much larger than that of the task. Ie, if I have a window maximised, the systray and clock touches the edge of the monitor and the window, whereas the task has space between the screen and window.
I would prefer everything to look the way the task does. But I've been trying at this for over half an hour and I'm burned out from work today so I turn it over to you lot. This is probably something pathetically obvious, but I just can't get it.

Thank you.

Plug in a USB hdd and copy files over. It used to take forever, but these days I only keep music and pictures on my computer, everything else gets burned to backup dvd's or usb sticks shortly after downloading, so it's a much easier task.

Only a few minor changes from last month. Mostly in colour.  I might change colours again soon, I like this one, but I miss green.

Still using Zwopper's wallpaper. Best wallpaper ever. I wonder if there should be a version with the xfce rat for the xfce machines. Actually, I wonder why I haven't seen any wallpapers yet with the xfce rat.

It's a good idea. It's been done before with Crunchbang Lite vs Crunchbang full. Maybe a similar idea was planned anyway for final release.

Getting a distro and installing your favourite apps is part of the fun, but having to remove the apps you're replacing can be a pain in the arse.

My NTFS external hdd used to automount, but it doesn't under Statler. Same message that you got.

But I just use pysdm to mount it. Not convenient if you use it often, but I only plug mine in maybe once every two days, so I don't mind.

I guess if you're after fast boot times, maybe something really lightweight like Puppy Linux.  Although I haven't really used it since early 2008, if I wanted soomething purely for fast booting on a netbook, I'd go for it, especially if it was SSD.

I don't use my pinky fingers for typing, or for guitar playing unless I really need to stretch to hit the riight chord. I am very uncoordinated with my pinky fingers. But I can still get 55-60wpm (just using 6 fingers I mean).

I generally stick to fiction books.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

Michael Kohlhaas by Heinrich von Kleist

These are some I have am reading at the moment (actually I haven't started Blood Meridian yet, but I am told it can be disturbing. You are warned.)

Recently I use Midori exclusively. I love it. But I still think that Iceweasel/Firefox is the better option for a default browser.

People know it, even Windows users, and it has a massive library of 3rd party add-ons. It feels very reliable.

Yep. I have oggenc.

When i specify a different tempfile dir it tells me there are multiple outputs with teh same input and cannot continue.

bah. this frustrates me too much. It'll be quicker for me to encode each song individually using vlc or audacity : (

Hmm. I've been wanting to find something like this for a while now as I have folders of wma music that my mp3 player won't play.

But when I run the command I get this:

decoding:scars are tattoos.wma

Interesting. It stands to reason that there shoyld be a way to telll all applications to kill their process before sending the power down signal. but i am kinnd of drunk and am just guessing.
