^ is definitely an option, but I am currently siding with just going for the 686 flavour.

I selected the 486 image as in theory it should be compatible with more systems, including VM installs. I say in theory, as I believe nearly all x86 systems should run the 686 image. Any system that actually requires the 486 image will probably struggle to run #! anyway.
I would be happy for the next builds to use 686 kernel. What do you think?

Why does everyone like unetbootin so much? #! works better (in my experience) with dd and it's so much easier!
dd is the recommended way ![]()
Not to get off topic but maybe we should consider a tool similar to unetbootin tailored specifically for #!, thoughts?

hmmmmm, I could just use the latest ISO from #! Home Page; fresh install - then w/ backports enabld do the distro upgrade and build from there?
Yes. The new images should be considered a point release and there should be no real reason to do a fresh install.

From the backports mailing list: http://lists.debian.org/debian-backport 00011.html
«
Backports are software from Debian's testing and unstable distributions, recompiled and repackaged for the current stable distribution so that they will run without new libraries whenever possible, and without upgrading to testing or unstable.
Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and backports are provided on an as-is basis, with risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable. Use with care!
It is therefore recommended to select single backported packages that fit your needs, and not use all available backports.
»
From Philip's brain:
I am well aware of the advice that is given and I am more than happy to ignore it. Having thunk that, I am also aware that some people are not as happy to ignore the advice, so I think I should compromise and create a release that tracks backported packages and another release that does not.
Am I hungry? I think I am. Hmm, what is for dinner?

Any reason for the switch back to GDM as opposed to lightdm? I can understand ditching slim though, good choice IMO.
LightDM is definitely something to look at for the Waldorf/Wheezy releases, but backporting it to Statler/Squeeze is not something I would like to do.

Sorry, still no Waldorf, yet.
Anyhow, I have been playing around with updating the Statler images, again. As you might be aware, the 3+ kernel is now available via backports and I updated the #! Mozilla mirror this morning so Iceweasel is now at version 10. Now seems like as good a time as any to update the builds.
The only changes I plan to make are:
Revert to GDM -- whilst SLiM has been working well for me, I understand that it has caused a fair amount of trouble for others. The sensible option is to switch back. The SLiM packages will remain in the repository and are pretty easy to install, if required.
Basic window tiling shortcuts added to Openbox's rc.xml.
'firmware-realtek' package installed by default.
Also, I am thinking about creating backported and non-backported images. The backported images will have backports turned on by default (as with the current image) and the non-backported images will stick to the main Squeeze repos, with the exception of Iceweasel and Geany, which will track the backports repositories.
By doing ^, I am hoping that some people will not feel the need to use the old 20110207 images.
Does anyone have any opinions/suggestions about this?

Which brings up the second question that I asked. How do I retain the monitor settings from one boot to the next? I assume that it is easy and trivial once one knows how.
You might need to look at adding some additional lines to your Openbox autostart script. Here is a thread giving some examples: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic
ve-config/ - your settings will differ, obviously, but it gives an idea ![]()

I am not sure what experience your friend has, but Linode provide an excellent VPS service. I have been hosting the #! site with them for a good few years and I have never had any issues.
If your friend is looking for a simpler solution, I have heard that Media Temple are quite good, although I cannot vouch for them myself.

95% of the day, us guys hanging around in the IRC are discussing about nonsense .. so it's not as technical as you might think. ;D
LOL, I kind of know that already. I meant to say that it is probably easier to facilitate a constructive monthly meeting on IRC ![]()

Re: Google Hangout - Tuesday 31st January (22 replies, posted in CrunchBang Talk)
We could always have both? Although probably not at the same time. Personally, I think the Google Hangouts are good for informal social chats, while IRC could be used for more constructive purposes. I have attended a good few Ubuntu UK meetings in the past and they always seem to work well. I will do some digging to find out what meeting bots are used, etc.

Re: Google Hangout - Tuesday 31st January (22 replies, posted in CrunchBang Talk)
The hangout has finished. It finished rather abruptly when my connection dropped. Apologies for that.
Anyhow it was good to have a chat and I would like to thank everybody who joined. Tonight's hangout was the second attempt at this and I think now is a good time to have a rethink. Personally, while I have really enjoyed the experience, I am not sure that the system provides an ideal environment for constructive conversations -- both hangouts suffered with audio problems and the text chat is quite basic. Also, I am conscious that some people are not overly happy with using a Google service and I would not like to think that anyone should feel excluded.
So, would it be better to drop the Google Hangouts in favour of holding monthly IRC meetings? I figure IRC will be a lot more accessible and it also has the advantage of being logged etc.

Login via myOpenID failed - probably because my "persona" was not personal enough...
The myOpenID service is strange. I have been using myOpenID for a good number of years (I even use it as a delegation service on my blog), but it took me a while to figure out that I needed to create a 'persona', before it would return my email address.
I can foresee myOpenID being a problem ![]()

Ah is it because google+ don't use gravatars that I don't get one on #!? Maybe when there's a "settings" page it'll be fixed.
This is strange, it should be working. Gravatar support is totally independent and is not connected to the OpenID service you use. Are you sure you have a gravatar associated to your email address?

^ indeed. what i'm wondering is 'how do other forums handle this stuff?'
is it a PunBB thing, or have people noticed this on other forums as well?
i'm not on that many forums, but the other one i use is IP.Board-based (which is non-free i think) and this issue is not there.rhowaldt wrote:not sure how all this technically works, but isn't it possible to just set a 'read'-flag for a user or something?

still thinking about this too. correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't this just a matter of setting a 1 to a 0, so to speak? doesn't seem that intensive an operation to me?
(i might be wrong!)
Setting a flag is super easy, and yes, it is not overly intensive. However, looping through a table to read the flags for each topic/post can be quite intensive.
I agree that it is something to be looked at, but to be honest, it is not super-high on the agenda at the moment. If possible, I would like to try and avoid getting bogged down in details at this stage ![]()

Yes and no. In theory, anything is possible, but considerations have to be made for how intensive the operations will be. For relatively few users, not a huge deal, but would it scale?
i personally find it very annoying to work with. the result is that i feel i need to read the forum-threads quick enough so it won't reset, which is not very comfortable. i'm curious to hear whether anyone else is running into this.
Not a real solution, but I tend to open the "New posts" page in a separate tab and work my through the links ![]()
