SSO should be secure enough for most, but I think the people who use those ten minute emails for registration will be upset.

Well, as I see it, using OpenID will/should provide the first barrier to spammers. The second barrier uses an Akismet library which is queried when a user associates their email to a username. I am hoping this will cut down on much of the spam we have been seeing here.

Registered with Google, no problems whatsoever. The method is infinitely more pleasurable than the usual BB thing of filling out details, going to the mailbox for a registration link and clicking. Nice job.

Thanks. I have tried to make the process as painless as possible.

Though, security conscious users will probably not like this.

Interesting, this is the sort of conversation I was hoping for. If anyone has any qualms about the process, I would love to read them smile

Nothing happens when I click on sign in.

Hmm, have you visited the site before? If so, try clearing your cache. If not, please could you give me some details about your browser?

Unia wrote:

Ehm, I can't register my usual forum name (Unia). Do I have to add a number?

No, but only lowercase characters are allowed. Maybe try unia?

As you may, or may not be aware, I am currently in the process of building a new website for the project. This morning, I pushed some commits to the site to enable user registration. If you would like to register a username on the new site, please do so.

Notes:

  • The site is still very much in its infancy and there is no real functionality yet, but I figure some people might want to grab their usernames, before they get taken.

  • You will need an existing OpenID account to register your username. The following providers are currently supported: Google, Yahoo, Ubuntu SSO, Launchpad. If anyone uses a different provider and they would like me to add support for it, please state the provider -- if there is enough interest, I will see what I can do.

If you do register on the new site and you have any feedback about the process, I would love to read it.

To register, go to http://crunchbang.org, hover over "sign-in" and select a provider.

This morning, I have added direct download links to the main #! download page. w00t!

The CrunchBang project now has ~16TB of bandwidth available each month (not counting any contributed mirrors) and hopefully this should be enough to allow direct downloads for some time.

It should be noted that BitTorrent remains the recommended method for downloading, and I would like to thank everyone that has helped out by seeding the images. You guys rock! smile

How big is the file? Is it something you could share to help with debugging?

Strange hmm

@huffpuff, I am not sure I would go as far as to recommend them, but I have been a happy Virgin customer for a couple of years. I have a 50MB cable connection and touch wood, it has been super reliable. Having said that, I know a couple of other people who would not touch Virgin with a barge-pole, which leads me to think that the level of service differs depending on which region you are in.

Another issue not related to SliM is the lack of /sbin/ included in $PATH... simple tools like ifconfig were no longer available and would only work as root.. that is until /sbin/ was add to the path.. Not a big issue, just a change that caused problems until it was identified.

Strange, I edited the default '~/.profile' file to include this:

# include sbin in PATH
if [ -d "/sbin" ] ; then
    PATH="/sbin:$PATH"
fi
if [ -d "/usr/sbin" ] ; then
    PATH="/usr/sbin:$PATH"
fi

Not too sure why it hasn't worked for you. It seems to be working fine on my systems hmm

Agreed, I doubt it will feature in any future releases.

+1 smile

I am not sure there is much to summarise. The hangout was a bit of an experiment to see if anyone would be interested in a live #! Q&A/feedback session. I was joined by a few familiar faces and some new ones too. #! was not discussed too much, and the hangout had more of a social feel to it, with discussions about the holidays and what not.

lcafiero wrote:

Could you all do another hangout again soon?

Sure. Personally, I really enjoyed it and it was great to hangout with some fellow geeks. The possibility of holding a monthly hangout was discussed, which I think it is a brilliant idea. I would be happy for it to be another relaxed social hangout, with the option of #! related chatter. Also, maybe it would be a good idea to hold it later in the day?

If anyone has any preferences for dates/times, please let me know. Otherwise I propose the last Wednesday of the month, starting around 1830/1900 GMT.

Seriously, Philip - just ditch SLiM already.  Like, change one of the Statler packages so that, on dist-upgrade, SLiM is replaced with GDM or a functional equivalent.  Really.  I mean, it looks like over 90% of the issues people have been having with the point release are directly related to what SLiM doesn't do that GDM does.

Blimey, this SLiM business is a puzzling one. I have had more than a few emails which have praised the replacement of GDM with SLiM, but no emails which have mentioned any problems with it. However this thread seems to indicate that there are some serious issues. I am finding it difficult to keep track.

Am I correct in understanding that the majority of issues are caused when trying to move from stable/Squeeze to testing or unstable?

^ good stuff smile

As raised in another topic, I have been quite quiet since the last release. Now, this is not an excuse, but health problems have meant that I have not been able to spend much time online. This is not ideal and I am feeling somewhat out of the loop.

I would like to try and rectify this and get up to speed with feedback on the release as quickly as possible. So, to this end, I would like to hold a public Google hangout, where anyone can join and contribute. Ideally, I would like to know what you think about the last release, what works, what doesn't work etc.

I will start the hangout on Thursday 29th December, around 11am until 4pm. If this is something that interests you, and you have time, please feel free to join the hangout and have a chat.

NOTE: on the day, I will update this post with details and links smile

On some systems (or all of them and people just haven't reported the issues), there's trouble with automounting and consolekit/HAL permissions.

Thank you for clarifying smile

I have not noticed any mounting problems myself, but I will look into it. For what it is worth, I think SLiM is probably going to be a stopgap, not a long term solution. As always, there is definitely lots of room for improvement.

My apologies for not taking a more active role in the discussions. I have been quite quiet of late, which I am aware of and I will try to be more active in future. In my defence, a few weeks ago, I developed a chronic case of sciatica, which has made sitting at my desk impossible and has put me off my game sad

What's up, Philip? At the very least, you might want to step in and explain/defend your choice of SLiM...

Where do I need step?
