I am actually running #! Karmic on a spare computer, but I did it by installing 9.04 first, then upgrading to 9.10. (sudo do-release-upgrade -d) Obviously this is completely unsupported and might break.
Heh, I broke something. I think I wasn't supposed to do that in the GUI. I had to shutdown the computer mid install and broked some stuff. Can't even get the oB menu. Oh well, it was a fresh install anyway. I just keep jumping install ships. I'll try it again later from cli.

It's installing snowpine's way right now. I'm just a dork for the idea of the boot time. Especially that uber boot time piped through what is known as "the faster ubuntu." Hmm, so fast it might break.

I think* the alternate CD can let you do a command-line installation of Karmic Koala. Then you can just install xorg, openbox, etc.
If you've never done a minimal install before, this guide may help:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal
*If Im wrong you can still just install Karmic and then install Openbox afterwards.
Thanks for the tips, anon.
You too, snowpine.

Re: Installing Crunchbang (12 replies, posted in Tips, Tricks & Scripts)
There is no 9.10 Karmic version of #! yet. Corenomial is still putting the finishing touches on the 9.04 release. I would not expect #! 9.10 until October at the earliest.
You can install #! over a minimal (or full, though it's not officially recommended) Ubuntu install by using the correct version of the script:
8.04: http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/dow ion_method
8.10: http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/dow on_methods
9.04 Testing: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic hbang-904/
Cool, thanks for the info. I've been using the 9.04 unofficial release I found here lately. When I used 8.10 I found out that I was using an old version of the kernel that didn't support my wireless OR ethernet controllers (so I couldn't get either for the drivers) or something like that. I figured there might be a way to install #! over 9.10's alpha, but guess not. It's cool. I was excited for the possibility of a new learning project. I've only been running linux since mid May. Turns out #! is the perfect tool to really learn Linux (because not everything, especially config options, is point and click).
I'll just stick to what I've got for now, I guess. I'll try compiling my first kernel in the mean time. I had trouble the first time because I had NO idea what even a tenth of the configuration options were the first time, so the only save I found for using #! was the unofficial 9.04 version.
Is Corenominal the only guy working on this stuff?

How would one go about installing #! over a fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop? I'd like to try out Karmic Koala (9.10) through #! and remember seeing someone say something somewhere slightly resembling installing #!'s OpenBox over a minimal install of Ubuntu or something. That sounds like a learning experience.

I have to say, I like yours better than the original. I like the way you've superimposed the laptop onto the wood background, and with a laptop within a laptop.

Maybe this http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ tent=80030
or this http://blog.brixandersen.dk/?p=67
Yep, it was brixandersen. I saw the gnome-look one afterwards and started thinking "Oh, they did it better."
I like mine alot, but the quality of the image for my laptop was very poor. And after a while I decided the lines were too thick.
I've added more to it since then, but I'm having trouble with my HDD monitor. It's not showing up, and I've noticed that it does when a window passes through it. (Like if I right click for my menu over it, when I close the menu it's there for a second.) It's bothering me.
But here it is updated.
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/5231/screenshotbho.jpg
Now I've got a script's output coming through the "EX:" under network. I have the script wget http://ipchicken.com, then head the index.html file for line 35, passed through a pipe for tail -1 to get rid of everything but the one line, then remove the index.html file so all I get is my external IP (because this is a laptop). Unfortunately, I don't know how to control the output to prevent it from returning the other stuff on the line (<br>), so I'm just not worried about it for now. I also used the external date command instead of conky's date machine (just because I wanted to mess around with that tool).
Right now I'm absolutely loving #! (esp. conky). This is only my first or second month running any kind of linux, and I've decided #! was the perfect choice. Such a learning tool this thing is!
Edit: Sorry, link updated. Apparently I imagebucketed the wrong image.
Doubledit: Just realized I didn't blur my IP. I'm not going to bother, which could be a mistake, but who here is a cracker?

Re: My Conky Config (2,564 replies, posted in Tips, Tricks & Scripts)
That looks like an ethernet interface to me. I think your computer has two ethernet ports.
Well, eth is ethernet, but that's what conky seems to label as my wireless. eth1 works for the dls and uls graphs and everything else (even the ip) for conky, but just not that.
It's okay. But what I would really be interested in is writing a script to find ones real ip on a DHCP network for Conky. Now that would be cool.
Any ideas?

Re: Upgrading Kernel/Ethernet & Wireless issues (8 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
for the panel it is bmpanel, and there isn't really a configuration per se. You can change the theme which will change the configuration basically, go into your autostart.sh and the line that starts with bmpanel change to bmpanel themename. If you look up bmpanel themes there are some good ones on the forums. Also if your wanting to look into a unix based distro give opensolaris a try to, it has some neat features (well mainly zfs and zones, but theyre pretty cool)
Will do. Thanks for the advice. And are bmpanel themes specially compiled or just png images with a theme file (effectively meaning I could create my own theme with some clever gimp and coding - I'm getting pretty good at "code echoing" - just changing lines and mimicking the basic structure of another piece of code)?

Re: Upgrading Kernel/Ethernet & Wireless issues (8 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Update Better Late than Never: I got it all working and running. All it took was the unofficial 9.04 release. I actually like it a LOT better than 8.10 irrespective of 8.10. I think the standard window manager settings are beautiful.
Plus now that internet works I've been using it for a while and I've started to get VERY familiar with Linux. I've started messing with configs and what-not, getting used to rc files and the like. I still haven't found the config file for the taskbar (is it lxpanel? I'm still not sure), but I imagine it's only a matter of time. Some searching and I'll find it. (Might want to add a config link to the preferences section in the menu for the official release
)
All in all I'd say I'm beginning to fall in love with #!, and Linux in general. I'd like to try BSD eventually, but FreeBSD is frightening, and I've grown complacently curious with Linux as it is.
So I guess this is my official "Hello" to the forum...? Yeah. Hi! I like this community, I think I'm here to stay. ![]()

For a kernel update, I think "sudo system-update -f" will do the trick.
Edit: I reread your post and realized you don't have internet connection. I'm not sure how to help.
Heh, it's okay. Thanks anyway.
I've got time and patience. I can wait until someone happens to know for whatever random reason.

Re: Upgrading Kernel/Ethernet & Wireless issues (8 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
A clarification or two:
I tried downloading the latest kernel off of softpedia (google search returned it) but the read me was too terse to follow. I've also tried searching for other instructions but typically they're either too terse or require the net.
And my last statement was meant to convey that I am TOTALLY a nub. I just noticed that there was a possible reading of it that sounded incredibly pompous.

Topic: Upgrading Kernel/Ethernet & Wireless issues (8 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Hello all,
New CrunchBang user here. I was running Jaunty Jackelope for about a week or two before I got legal editions of Dreamweaver and PS CS4 and decided I didn't want to run them through Wine. I reinstalled Windows XP and got my configurations all set, then decided to install a lightweight speedy distro for when I don't need to use Windows and #! seemed perfectly suited for my purposes. I've installed #! once before to check it out (my laptop has been running like 5-10 different OS's over the past 3-4 weeks) and had the same problem I have now. I've pretty much narrowed it down as best I could, but I need help solving it.
In #! neither my Ethernet NOR my Wifi work. My lspci -v readings give these two for the controllers:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell Device 01cd
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 64, IRQ 5
Memory at ef9fe00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: b44
...
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Device 0009
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
Memory at efcfc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
Kernel modules: wl, ssb{If you need the Capabilities I can give them to you, just didn't feel like typing them out.}
So my problem seems to be that CrunchBang is running the 2.6.27-9 kernel. In Jaunty (I believe) I was running -10. I've found a few threads that talk about my problem saying that the Kernel needs to be updated for my Network Controller to work. Problem is: I can't just do a simple command in terminal (I think I'd found a few that they said should do it) because I have no internet whatsoever. The drivers I need for my wifi need to be downloaded (though in Jaunty activating the Broadcom STA driver w/o any internet seemed to work, I'm guessing it's because CrunchBang is running 8.10, and thus, -9 Kernel), and I have absolutely NO idea how to upgrade the kernel manually. So... Any help solving this problem would be very appreciated, and probably make me one of the happiest CrunchBang users in history.
P.S. I may sound like I'm far from a *nix-nub, but believe me, I am. I'm just a quick learner. My first time at Linux's hand was about a month ago or so.
Thanks Guys,
Michael Sendker.
