You're welcome.

/  means the root of your file  system
./ means current directory
../ means up one directory
../../ means up two directories
~ is your personal home dir

So, if you're in a terminal and browsing, say, your /etc directory and want to quickly switch to your music directory in your home folder, you can type cd ~/music.

Ah, interesting.  I'm surprised that USB ports are still powered during a suspend.

~ is short for your home directory.  So, in my case, my home directory is /home/eric - yours might be something like /home/bobg3 or /home/bob (or sub whatever your username is in place of bob), so you'd want to put the .dropbox folder in your /home/<your username> directory.

Zaxxon, that is strange.  Since suspend actually writes to RAM, could it be that less RAM is powered when you suspend #!?  Or, maybe more accurately, the ram takes less power?

Would love to hear corenominal weigh in on this.

Alright, I figured it out.

As dr. cox mentioned above, I went to Edit/Preferences/Applications and, even though the mailto showed thunderbird, I selected "use other" and browsed to the Thunderbird executable @ /usr/bin/thunderbird.  Once I selected this, it showed a second thunderbird in the list and worked like a charm.

Thanks for your help!

I think you're right, choops. smile  Still looking for the answer . . .

Still not working, hmm.

dr. cox wrote:

try to look under firefox - preferences - applications.....  there you should find "mailto" and you can change the "default" to any program you like in ur /usr/bin for example.....

I've done that, dr. cox, and it shows as being Thunderbird.  I think that's the more direct way of setting the mail preferences, as opposed to the link I posted where you go into the about:config and do it by setting a string.

That one doesn't work here.  It shows as not being installed.

Howdy Folks,

I replace Claws mail with Thunderbird as Claws wasn't working as fast with my setup and I'm just comfortable with Thunderbird.

So, the problem I'm having (and should be able to figure out) is that if I click a mail link in a web page, it doesn't open a new message in Thunderbird.  Doesn't matter if Thunderbird is open or not.

I did a little research and found this post and followed the directions under "Setting up email client in Linux" to no avail:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_mail_client

I'd though maybe it was under the Set Default Applications, but don't see it.

Any ideas?

Have you intalled the proprietary driver for your network card under System/Restricted Device Manager?

bobg3, I don't know of any specific reasons not to use Reiser, although I've no experience with it on a netbook, so can't say if you'll see any marked speed increase.

One possible argument for using ext3 is that it's possible for your to access it from Windows with a plugin.  I've never done this, but I've read about it.

I used to get really caught up in the file system discussion, but have lately been opting for the vanilla ext3, but I can tell you that ext4 will be available in the next Ubuntu release, although it may not be default, and it's got some impressive speed benchmarks so far.

Awesome.  Thanks for the update. smile

I concur - I love the screencasts and actually need to spend more time with them.  I'm quite behind. smile  For Gimp lovers, there's also a screencast called Meet the Gimp.

Just a note for those who read this: you need to install the ntp package and (I think) restart your PC before it'll sync.

If I remember correctly, there are a few other packages installed at the same time, but Patrick can probably fill us in.

Hey bobg3,

Your partition scheme sounds reasonable to me.  Curious if there's any particular reason you're choosing ReiserFS?  I've used it before running ZenWalk and found it fast, but some of that was just the distro, I'm sure.

I've had incredible luck with the NTFS support nowadays, but as Mehall points out, you can get into a bind where it won't mount if Win didn't shut down correctly.  You can either force it, or reboot and shut Windows again.

Let us know how it goes. big_smile

Yeah, I just tested the Hibernate, which also works fine, but it's about 55 seconds to resume.  I had a heck of a time with both suspend and resume a few years ago, but since then, it's been getting much better, at least in Ubuntu.

Hey bobg3,

Great questions.

I would discourage you from mounting your home in your Win partition.  What I'd do is create a home partition for #! and mount your Win partition either inside of it, or elsewhere in your filesystem (/media/win for instance).

As for the size of your / partition, I've had a habit of using 6GB for #! and Ubuntu, but an initial install of #! is ~2GB. Right now, I'm at 2.24 GB after adding/subtracting a few programs.  I keep my /var on a separate partition too, and it's taking up ~ 560MB at the moment.

Hope that helps.

Just a bit of bragging on CrunchBang. smile

I'm quite happy with how quickly it suspends and resumes on my Dell Inspiron laptop and have clocked #!s resume speed at 4 to 5 seconds.  Amazing!

So far, I haven't run across any OS or distro that resumes so quickly.

I like Rhythmbox too.  I've tried several others and it just does what I need it to do and is pretty darn stable for me.

It was quite slow for me too, but did eventually download.  Might want to give it a few tries.
