Re: [solved] downloading the undownloadable - your ideas please (12 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
I know this has been marked as solved but I have a solution to this recurring issue that I would like to bring to the community's attention - at least for the benefit of those using Gecko based browsers like Firefox...
If you check the K-Meleon browser extension site (@http://kmext.sourceforge.net/mplug.htm) you can download a patched version of the flash plugin that when moved to the proper Firefox subfolder allows for easy recuperation of any downloaded/watched video:
Flash Player 10.0.45.2
Flash plugin version 10. Please note this is a patched release of npswf32.dll which enables embedded videos to be saved in your temp folder instead of deleting them after a video has finished playing; those videos will have a *.tmp extension. Copy them from your temp folder to another folder and rename the extension from tmp to flv or mp4.

FYI
MicroMiser (found this via UbuntuGeek)
http://www.miserware.com/products_micromiser.html
MiserWare MicroMiser is an intelligent software power management solution for x86 servers, laptops, and PCs running Linux and Microsoft Windows. MicroMiser automatically optimizes a system to use energy more efficiently without compromising performance or availability. The MicroMiser Power Management Daemon (see below) when installed on a server, laptop, or PC, matches the energy consumed by the system to the load on the system automatically. MicroMiser typically lowers total system energy use by 10-35% even when a system is 100% utilized. MicroMiser also tracks the energy saved for use in estimating cost savings and carbon emission reductions.
They have an open beta, which I haven't tried (yet) but sounds really interesting at first glance.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission? (79 replies, posted in Off Topic / General Chat)
Living in Europe means I learned to drive manual and have been doing it since. I tried auto (and reverse sided!) in Oz and NZ when I went there, and while it's easier I felt somewhat insecure with it -- seems like I lacked the feel of the car.
BTW, I must confess that I'm a bit of speed-freak who drives over 30000 km/y in a 150HP station, but I never forget what my father used to tell me when I was learning: "Any dork can speed, the secret to safe driving is being able to stop whenever it's needed". ![]()

I usually don't take place in religious wars but just wanted to report that, being an LXDE fanboi, I stuck with PCManFM in its present incarnation for quite some time and until recently, when I finally made the switch to Thunar as per the usual wiki recipe.
I kept PCManFM though, and even set one of Thunar 'custom actions' for 'open PCManFM here'... ![]()

I just couldn't install the deb package: "Error: Wrong architecture 'i386'".
On review, the problem resides with the deb not being compatible with 'all' instead of just 'i386' (haven't tried the dpkg --force route).
Ticket opened: http://code.google.com/p/marchobmenu/issues/detail?id=2

[...] Thanks to pointing out emelfm2 in this thread. i have had a look at it quite some time ago (maybe 4-5 years ago) when i finally switched to linux and looked for something to replace total commander. but at that time i did not like it (can't really remember why). tried it again and i think its really something. works fine when you really want to do some file managing. FYI: ppa for emelfm2 latest version (jaunty & karmic) @ https://launchpad.net/~futurepilot/+archive/ppa
IMHO, a very lightweight and easily configurable double-pane fm...

Topic: QPS gui task manager not working (0 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Once again, this isn't a #! specific problem, it comes from its Ubuntu foundation.
Just found qps (http://qps.kldp.net/) and was happy to find it in Ubuntu repositories. But after installation, while trying to run it from Terminator, I get a segfault. Tried from deb and from earlier version, found via www.rpmseek.com, to no avail.
So here's the report, in case someone nails this... Thanks.

Re: Changing default language (26 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Thanks again, anonymous.
I already had that page in my links for further reading, but messing with all the Unicode character conversion, the necessity to go deep into system files and the fact that ATM I am considerably time strapped set me off it.
I'm considering just hand merging the current en_GB I'm using with pt_PT or en_IE, to make something like en_PT... (or should it be the other way round, like pt_GB?)
[rant]
But like Nino and CColins commented at the later's site, I find quite unbelievable how much hassle it takes for such a simple system tweak. We get like 30 different text editors and 20 file managers in linux, but not one usable locale control panel or a decent gui task manager (just discovered qps, but every version I try is throwing segfaults...). Oh, dear! ![]()

TY, anonymous. I already did that, I was wondering if there is a system wide tweak that would avoid having to redo that next time around.

Re: Opera very slow (12 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Yep, being a user since version 0.7, I have to confess the latest main branch K-Meleon releases (1.5.x) kinda sucks, you have to go with the unofficial ones by Fred (who earns extra kudos for a Wine compatible build I have yet to try) and Hao Jiang to get a reliable browser.
But still it is a really lightweight browser and also ultra customizable -- check the work of disrupted emulating lots of Firefox extensions via Lua macros. That has to have some appeal for real Linux hardliners... ![]()
A minus for Opera is the sometimes clunky linux interface, even when skinned...

As I've been around for sometime, you may find my manners a bit lacking for only now caring to introduce myself. Anyway...
I'm somewhat of an Janus user, I do a lot of Windows, but my heart belongs to Linux.
I do remember trying to install Yggdrasil, but I still count myself as a noob, since the sum of my knowledge wouldn't be enough to have a working Linux system, if not for the "kindness of strangers".
Appart from a fairly recent lappie, I mostly operate ancient hardware -- my work rig, for instance, is a PIII 1GHz 512MB RAM 20GB HDD HP Vectra.
I'm a sucker for eye candy and usability smooth, but I just can't stand resource hogging, so I'd rather have a bare bones funcional system than a Vista.
I've tried many a distro: not long ago my favorites were Slax for a usb pendrive, Zenwalk for a livecd, and plain vanilla Ubuntu for HDD install.
That all changed now (hats off to corenominal and the rest of the bunch here) because I really love CrunchBang. ![]()

Re: Changing default language (26 replies, posted in Help & Support (Stable))
Not really a follow-up, but marginally related...
I am using the english language across my #! install, and I like it so -- it makes it easier to follow menu hints and other such recipes, without the locale induced background noise.
But, although I have the proper timezone & keyboard configuration, I would like the other system settings (mainly date & metrics) to reflect my locale (like you can do very easily in... cough... windows, through the control panel regional settings).
To sum it up, I want to keep using the the english interface, but have a non-english locale.
This isn't a specific #! issue; most of the time either a distro asks for such configuration at setup or I'm out of luck. Any tips?
