OK HI Again,
I've been working on it. crunchy & tranche method both lead to the same result from the /var/log/arpon/arpon.log. Here's the readout :  ArpON "Arp handler inspection" version 1.90 (http://arpon.sourceforge.net)
  [03/24/2011 - 11:16:11 CDT] DARPI Start...
[03/24/2011 - 11:16:11 CDT] DARPI deletes these Arp Cache entries:

ERROR: arpon.c:2612 @ : No such device exists (SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device).

So I don't think it's working.

I get a very different readout when as root I start arpon. That it for now.
oh, when tranche suggests the digits to replace the # sign Are those digits corresponding to the system run level ?
I will try bobrossw method next.

Hello everybody,

I would like to launch an application called ArpON when the system boots each time.
What syntax should be used for an init script for booting ArpON in the boot system ? AND
How do I do it ?

Here'a a photo of some pretty pissed penguins.

Try an mplayer frontend like GNOME-Mplayer or SMPlayer.

Regarding the 'disabling' effect k9copy has on VLC, do you get any error messages if you launch VLC from the terminal?
Also, does the curses front-end for VLC (type 'nvlc' in terminal) still work in this case?

I agree with anon's recommendations for mplayer and it's front-ends, btw.

Sorry gutterslob, but I removed vlc earlier today and cannot check those areas.

Hi everybody,
Having always used vlc as my media player of choice, I now need to use another, as installing the k9copy application, has a disabling effect on vlc. So I'm open to suggestions from our great members for what would work as an alternative to vlc in statler #!.

The sudo grub-install /dev/hda is then the command, which installs the connection from your prefered grub into the master boot record (mbr) of your first hard disk. That's the moment of "rescuing".

.

Hopefully that helps!

Karl

Hi Karl,
Perhaps you didn't notice from my first post, but I do NOT use an MBR. Again grub is loading from the boot sector of the root partion of #!.
I'm not sure but it may make a difference in the rescue.
I may just wait for the debian release of #! and do a freshh install.

I tried the technique you recommended.....still no joy. When you say to boot into pclinuxos, do you mean from the live cd or otherwise?? Oddly enough I am able to boot from the grub menu :  slitaz on hda6 and XP on hdb1 but not hda1 or hda4 where two other linux distros are located

neerseer,

boot into your PCLinuxOS/Mandriva and make a mountpoint, lets say /mnt/t] via sudo mkdir /mnt/t and then mount your crunchbang-partition, let's say it's on sda4 ... sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/t. Next do a chroot  via sudo chroot /mnt/t. You are now on your crunchbang. Via sudo grub-install /dev/sda you can reinstall the bootmenu from crunchbang to your bootsector. Do it with whatever system you want.
If you want to install the bootmanagers, tell every distro to install it's bootmanager in it's own partition, so /dev/sda4, /dev/sda5, whatever. And only from one Distro (prefered NOT a Mandrivabased one .. they are incompatibel to the rest of all distros) ... and whenever you change your distros, boot from your prefered one and do a sudo update-grub ... to bring all installed distros into your grub.cfg.
Oh, after that, you have to manually edit your /boot/grub/grub.cfg for the mandrive/pclinuxos entry. It's (sorry) fucked up ... blame mandrivas "secured" grub.

Have fun,

Karl

Oh, and if your bootmenu is up again and working boot into your PCLinuxOS 2010 and do from there a sudo grub-install /dev/sda7 ... or wherever it is, so in case, that you update it, you don't again kick your whole system!!!

pclinuxos was removed from the partition I initially tried to install it on. it was replaced by slitaz, on that particular partition. should I make a mountpoint through slitaz ??

I have a multiple distro HD that when recently I tried to install pclinucos/lxde, it somehow goofed up my boot sector, and now I am unable to boot into #! and the other distros. Grub was installed into the boot sector of crunchbangs root partition. From there I added distros to the menu.lst. After trying to install pclinuxos which failed, It wrote to the root partition of #! and used all of it's remaining unused space. Also it seems to have installed grub into the partition of a different distro, which it attempts to boot from but fails. Can I recover from this mess ??:o

Thank you anonymous.

The sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf  removal of the section did the trick. Thank you so much. It's good to be home again.:cool::cool:

Hello to all my bangin friends,

I have just installed a new video card (GeForce 240 GT) the recommended drivers from nvidia for linux were 195.36.15-pkg1. I installed the driver with X turned off, but now when trying to reboot I am getting errors :

problem parsing the config file; Parse error on line 13;
Fatal server error;

xinit (error 111): unable to connect to Xserver

How do I get back to a normal boot up with the GUI ??

Hi everybody,

I am trying to set up my home pc to enable openssh. It is behind a NAT router. It is ethernet. It is cable modem. After reading up on the details, there remains...some questions. For instance, suggestions abound on how to make ssh more secure like in the sshd_config file changing Permit Root Login to NO and changing the Port from 22 to something else, etc. So do I edit the sshd_config file before I try to connect to a remote host OR after the connection ? Also generating keys. Where in the process should that be done ? Before or after the attempt to a remote server ? That's about it for now. Any suggestions and insights will be received warmly. This is my first attempt at using openssh and tunneling.

so do I copy those files to a cd-r; then after the newer #! is installed, copy those cd-r files back to their respective folders and away we go ?

Is there a way to save your system configurations and settings from say 8.10 to 9.10 ? I like the way my 8.10 is now set, but also would like to take advantage of the newer releases without sacrificing all my work to this stage. tongue:)

my summation from these posts is that we may be approaching, in the not too distant future, a community edition of #!.
I, for one, am wondering how a #! based on slackware, could be like. Again, not expressing dissatisfaction with #!, just innovative curiosity. As is the case with many other leading linux distros, the collective aspirations of the devoted community members, have lead to some positive and engaging endeavors. Puppy and Mandriva and Mint come to mind. There certainly are many gifted members in this community forum, which under the founder's guidance, could conceptualize and realize a dream system....ahhh....the beauty of daydreaming. roll roll

Well the fall is my favorite season and it's positively been enhanced with new distro releases. On my box right now .... #! crunchbang, VectorLinux 6.0 standard, Linux Mint 7.0 xfce CE. So far this fall I've checked into openSuse 11.2 live KDE, NetsecL 2.4, Lunar Linux, Salix 13.0.1... will explore Mandriva 2010 xfce and Fedora 12 xfce when available.

a very happy me.:P:P

There's a group I came across a couple of years ago, though somewhat obscure, hinted at a cross section between led zeppelin and pink floyd. They are sonically and lyrically mesmerizing, so if you need a new audio fix, look into...PORCUPINE TREE.

I am hoping there is someone adept at decoding and encoding. Here is what I am trying to do. I have a cd that is in a format called dts. I would like to downmix this to stereo in the ogg vorbis format. Any help...SOS...:P

There were some interesting application choices, some of which I had not known about yet. I will check into some of those app's and thought the reviewer had a very balanced yet progressive approach to the article.

Hello everybody,

What might be the disadvantages of staying with 8.10.02 as opposed to the latest release? I like the way I,ve got 8.10 tweaked and am reluctant to start over at this time.
I guess 6 month updates  are a little too soon for me. I feel more comfortable with about a year.
