You know, if the wallpaper were grey and grungier, it would be a better #! theme, and the blue sky would stand out all the more.
Nice job!
Yeah, the problem was finding the darker grungier wallpaper pattern. At least in a size and quality suitable for a full size desktop wallpaper. I'll be on the lookout though.
I've been playing around with creating a tearing effect using Inkscape and I came up with the following wallpaper which I think is a little UN-like what I normally do, but I think it's interesting and maybe even attractive to some (okay.. a couple of) people
. The direct link to the 1280x1024 wallpaper is right here:

Wow. I like that wallpaper. I have a few close up grass shots but this is unique and interesting. I love the blurred edges too. Any idea where someone might get a hold of that? Maybe even in 1920x1200 for my work machine?
This is a similar one that is currently a favourite of mine: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta

lol. Yeah, I don't know much about materials.. but I do know how to make them shiny.
Playing with Blender over lunchtime today. Now keep in mind, I know absolutely nothing about materials and textures (or lighting or just about anything else in Blender) so these are just kind of playthings to help me learn. I thought I'd post them here just for fun. The full resolution is 1280x1024 and I'm not quite sure how to post them here without them shrinking in the browser, so I've included direct links to the files too:

The thong... I dunno whether to laugh or cry.
You just made my day.
[EDIT: okay.. here's the package that you'd buy your Uncle Ned]

You can actually find the full blank (without logo) version on my Flickr site at: http://flickr.com/photos/rfquerin/28500

Click 'All Sizes' once you get there and you'll see the 1280x1024 full size version.

This is Richard's artwork set to transparency 50%, magnified a little and offset on a eee sized transparent background. Get the wallpaper @ http://www.willsimpson.org/images/transparenteee1.png and set your background color to whatever you want. Here is a color I call HANNA (without "h" in the end) green. You can have any color you want just by changing the background color.
Zwopper had given me this idea in another thread. Still could use more refinement.
Giants? I don't think so.
Did you change the shadow underneath the object from black to something else? I dunno, that's the only part that looks a little strange to me. Are you doing the mods (cropping and background colour change) in Gimp or Inkscape?
A while back I had worked on a black mesh in Inkscape. I thought it might make a good backdrop for a #! wallpaper since so many #! people seem to enjoy the dark themes. This one's fairly clean and aimed at those in a kind of an 'industrial' mood I guess.
The full resolution is 1280x1024 so make sure you click through to get the full res before saving it.

Foomandoonian wrote:Thought I may as well draw my 'blammo' logo up as a tshirt. I've also brainstormed some slogans for the back - nothing too serious. In fact, maybe a little risqué now I think about it. Ah, well...
Yeah.. as I read them I got to wondering where exactly you were coming from.. In fact the first slogan is the only one my twisted mind can't dirty-up!
Actually maybe corenominal could use one of those last few on the thong!
akaned wrote:Nice work
Have you tried making a copy of the words, color it black, squish it down, and use that as your drop shadow?
I actually do that some of the time. Although for certain character configurations it works better than others. For this I was really just messin' around. When I revisit this idea, I'll keep that in mind to get what might be more realistic drop shadows. (or I could actually use Blender.. hehe). But that wouldn't be as fun now would it?
corenominal wrote:I would look nasty in one of those!
Yeah. I'm not partial to the 'banana-hammock' style of undergarment.
corenominal wrote:The way in which you have achieved the appearance of depth works well. Nice job, I like it!
Thanks. I'm going to play with this 'depth of field' effect a little more. I like the 'crunch' text but I really had kinda nuthin for the bang! end of things. Still, it looks interesting. Something to work on. I've got a couple or three pages of my sketchbook scattered with crunchbang ideas which I sketch whenever I've got idle time (which is quite a bit when you're fighting for 2 hours constantly rebooting to get your video card going - like last night).
corenominal wrote:Nice work! I like both designs and I would purchase both, one of Hanna's for Trouble'n'strife and one of rfquerin's for myself!
I keep meaning to look into setting up a CafePress shop, I will try and get it done as soon as the .02 releases are out.
Don't forget the ever-popular thong that you can sell on Cafepress. I mentioned once to Dave Yates questioning whether or not he sold many of the Lottalinuxlinks.com thongs... Funny, I never got a response.

cdn wrote:Oh, and rfquerin, the first time that happened to me it was a pain because I was without an X-server for hours. I think I gave up on it in the end and just went to bed as it had kept me up until all hours in the morning trying to fix it.
The second time I could sort of remember what to do, and when I'd fixed it made a note for if it happened again.
The third time it was no longer a pain, just a minor nuisance. "Oh, the kernel's been upgraded. Guess that means a video driver compile then", I'd say to myself, and toddle off to my terminal to type in the following:
sudo su <- to put myself in a 'real' root environment
apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` <- to install necessary stuff for compiling driver
lspci | grep -i nvidia <- to be sure of the model of my nvidia graphics card
w3m nvidia.com <- to download the latest driver
chmod +x ./NV[TAB].run <- to mark the downloaded driver as executable
sh NV[TAB].run <- to run the driver installation script
fretsonfire <- to have some fun after new graphics driver installed and Xserver restarted :)
You may like to print that. I did before I knew how to do it (and how to reinstall grub) blindfold
Actually that's exactly how i did it and I still couldn't get it to work. But in the end I went back to my previous driver (probably only a month or two old) because I couldn't get the latest and greatest (released by Nvidia 01-09-09 I believe) to work properly. Now it all seems to be back to normal EXCEPT that my GDM screen is coming up at the wrong resolution (it's HUGE). I've gotta do a little googling on that today and fix it tonight.
btw - thanks for the nice compliments on the wallpaper.
Did you create that mosaic background in the Gimp? Or is it a texture from somewhere else? It makes for a nice textured (and sorta techy) backdrop. Cool.

I like that.
Here's a couple of slight variations. Here's a link to the svg file in case anyone wants to experiment and use the t-shirt shapes: (http://rfquerin.org/temp/cbang_teework.svg)
ps. Heathenx got our shirts done locally for OLF so we were able to get the URL on the back collar. I'm not sure if something like Cafepress or Spreadshirt gives you that kind of option.

Yeah I think a nice simple graphic on a shirt is nice. It's tough to do anything with the gradients etc that my original showed, it would have to be simplified colour wise at least. When we did our screencasters t-shirts we did a logo (and saying) on the front, and then a small URL of the site on the back of the shirt up near the collar. You could do a real simple #! logo that would get people saying "WTF is that??"
and then have the little URL somewhere to fill them in.
Cool idea, no matter what graphic is used.
After messing around for 2 hours trying to get my nvidia card up and running again after a kernel upgrade, I really needed a little unwinding, and Inkscape usually fills the bill for that. I came up with a kinda fun wallpaper. The #! is from a paper I posted earlier. It's fairly minimalistic and sorta darkish I guess.
A link to the full res file is right here: http://rfquerin.org/temp/cbangfun03_01_1280x1024.png

Ahh.. I tried creating the ~/.icons folder first and then tried the /usr/share/icon thing. Both didn't work. Then I realized that the archive I extracted in there was a folder holding a series of several icon themes that needed to be extracted and brought up one folder level. So I've now got them in my own ~/.icons directory and everything works.
Thanks people.
I'd like to add a new GTK icon theme. I've tried copying the folder to /usr/share/icons but it still doesn't show up in the User Interface dialog. Any pointers? I don't see a way to manually add one.
While I have not got a Mini 9, I was seriously looking at ordering one soon. I'd be really interested to hear how it goes. I was figuring I would likely put #! on it too. The reviews I've read are pretty good.
lol. One of my first screencasts dealt with creating a shiny button with an offset highlight and gradient just like this.
Actually I've been thinking about brushing up on my Blender rendering skills and doing something nice in there. Some of the stuff I've seen from people using Blender is just awesome.
Here are a few variations with some custom made #! symbols. Here's a link to the svg file in case anyone wants to play with them: http://rfquerin.org/temp/cbangfun02.svg
