Yup.. I can Win+Tab (I think) to bring up the middle-click menu, but I wanted to just be able to alt-tab between all my apps. Oh well, thought there might be a way.

Actually, I'm using Tint2. I wonder if there is a way to get it to show icons for all apps on all desktops instead of just the current desktop. That may get me what I'm looking for. I'll have to look into it.

Another nice feature that I'd love to see on Openbox (left a message on the openbox mailing list about this with no response yet) is to have a key combo that would minimize all the apps on the desktop except the one that's active. I think you can do this in Fluxbox, but I haven't found a way to do it with Openbox. I tried combining ShowDesktop with a Focus command, but can't seem to get it to work.

Thanks for all the responses.

Is it possible to have apps that are running on other desktops show up when I hit alt-tab? I like to run Blender on it's own desktop but I'm routinely switching back and forth from it.. Any way to configure it so that the alt-tab list includes all apps, not just those on the current desktop?

Sorry if it's a dumb question. I've been searching but haven't found an answer.

You betcha. smile

Here's a 1600x1200 version for you:

Thats kinda funny, im having some trouble out of ffmpeg myself! except mine is trying to convert .avi files to .mpg. I use tovid to do that task and it started giving me an error about not being able to create a file, then it waites 30 seconds for the file to appear "witch it dont" and then it stops. The strange thing is "like you" it was working not that long ago! Has anyone else had any trouble like this out of ffmpeg or tovid?

I think tovid uses ffmpeg (and mencoder as well I think). So maybe this is an ffmpeg issue.

I've just built the latest ffmpeg from svn and it's giving me errors as well. sad

A couple of days back I did a system update (which went fine) but now I've got a problem..

It seems that ffmpeg will no longer recognize libmp3lame, libx264 and a few other things. I had no problems with this a week ago, but now it only has support for limited codecs. Running ffmpeg -version yielded this info:

FFmpeg version r11872+debian_3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3.1, Copyright (c) 2000-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al.
configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-swscaler --enable-x11grab --prefix=/usr --enable-libgsm --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-pthreads --disable-strip --enable-libfaad --enable-libfaadbin --enable-liba52 --enable-liba52bin --enable-libdc1394 --disable-armv5te --disable-armv6 --disable-altivec --disable-vis --enable-shared --disable-static

I'm running 8.10.02, and ffmpeg from the #! repos.

I'm actually building a version of ffmpeg from svn now, so it's not an immediate problem, but I'm wondering why ffmpeg was able to use libmp3lame a week or two ago and now it doesn't appear libmp3lame support is compiled in. Was the package changed in the last round of updates?

But, you are quite obviously very talented and so there is no justification needed! wink

Ha. Try telling that to my daughter when I tell her we can't afford that new Hannah Montana DVD because Daddy needed to get that new Tablet PC Drawing thingy.  Somehow I don't think that'll fly  big_smile

I've always used it just for photo retouching, but lately I've been determined to practice my sketching.

Nevermind..

Installing ufraw seems to have enabled a bunch of stuff.. including cr2 thumbnails in nautilus! W00t!

I like using Nautilus. I've installed gnome-raw-thumbnailer so that I can see thumbnails of my raw files in Nautilus. The problem is that they don't show up unless the file extensions are all uppercase. So coming out of my camera (via f-spot) the extensions are .cr2. I don't see thumbs unless they are ".CR2".

A few questions:

1. Does anybody use another file manager that would show raw thumbnails?
2. Any suggestions for a bash script or command that could rename (recursively into subdirectories) the raw files so the extensions are uppercase?
3. I suppose batch renaming the raw file extensions will completely bork my f-spot library which will likely have to be re-imported. Grr. Maybe I'm wrong?

What are other people's photo workflows? I pull my raw files (and jpegs) off the camera with f-spot but don't use f-spot for much else. I use nautilus for file operations and rawstudio for raw processing.

I've been trying to practice some freehand sketching lately using my Wacom tablet and the Gimp. Here's something I did.. not sure if it's of any use to anyone.. but I've posted a link to the XCF file complete with all the layers in case anyone wants to do anything remotely creative with it. wink

Speaking of that.. have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HcsDc_9LX8

Actually, Troy Sobotka (who has been helping me learn more and screencast about Blender) pointed it out to me.. has actually been working on that film for his day job. The bikes are so cool. Apparently all the vehicles were developed by this guy (http://www.danielsimon.net). Lots of neat stuff there.

This is the first experiment I've really done using Blender to add glare to a graphic created in Inkscape. I thought it would be a nice wallpaper for people with a penchant for black but with a little shock of colour. wink

Note that it looks significantly better at full resolution than it does if you're viewing a slightly downsized version.

Does anyone else have an issue with the blender screen and conky? I keep getting the conky panel overlaying itself on blender every few seconds. Doesn't happen with other screens.

Hmm. I run Conky on my laptop and have no Blender issues. I also run with compositing (xcompmgr) turned on in Crunchbang. It could be the specific conky settings that affect it's behaviour with Blender. I'll check tonight on my Conky settings.

Youve also got a great "cast voice" lol.

LOL. No.. I think I sound pretty much like a doofus. Even after we've done over 90 Inkscape screencasts (far less than half are done by me) I still can't stand the sound of my own voice when it's played back to me. I guess it's the same for everyone.. I'm a little more used to hearing it, but I still think it's a bit dork-ish. wink

More importantly, I hope they ease the fears of people who think quality video editing on Linux is nearly impossible.

anonymous wrote:

I never knew you could use Blender as a video editor. After all its description is "3D modeller/renderer".

Yeah, that's the generally accepted belief. But actually you can piece together video, images and/or 3d modelled stuff with it. It's quite a complete tool. In fact, I was shown last night that you can do quite amazing things with 16bit images coming off of a DSLR camera that you simply can't do as flexibly with something like the Gimp.  Blender is really a pretty pro-grade tool with quite an amazing feature set as I'm coming to learn.

Development seems to be quite aggressive too. Apparently version 2.50 is going to be a significant upgrade UI wise among other things.

The funny thing is (and this may be just he way my brain works) but editing video in Blender seems much more logical and intuitive to me than when I was trying to do it in Kino and Kdenlive.

I would recommend a few things:

1. Get Blender 2.49a from blender.org. The one in the repos will work (it's 2.46 I believe) but there are improvements in the newer version. You can leave the repo version installed if you want. Just download the tar from blender.org, unzip it and run it directly from there. No install necessary.

2. Watch all 3 screencasts if you can. There are points in screencast 2 and 3 that really would have helped me out in screencast 1. smile I'm learning as I go here so people pointed very useful things out to me after the first one which I then implemented or described in the latter ones.

The use of proxies I describe in screencast 3 means you can literally edit HD footage on a netbook if you like. Really. My little Kodak Zi6 camera shoots 720p and believe me, even on this XPS13 laptop it gets a bit frustrating scrubbing back and forth through video. Using proxies it's a dream. Seriously.

Of course if you need any help with it, just post away and I'll do the best I can to help you out.

Not sure if this is the right section to post this.. but..

Although my blog is in the planet, I thought I'd mention here in the support forums that I've now got 3 screencasts done illustrating how to use Blender as a video editor.

I find Blender to be very stable and quite easy to use even for basic video editing. I've had 100x more success with Blender as a video editor than with Kino, Kdenlive or anything else I've tried.

Although the interface looks quite scary at first glance, I'm so far from a blender expert that it's not funny, and I find it quite simple actually. The screencasts are really aimed at complete newbies like me, who just want to edit and produce a video (cutting, joining clips, adding sound, music etc.) quickly and easily using Linux.

I'm learning as I go, so hopefully others can too. You can find the latest one at the following link, the post has links to the first two screencasts as well.

http://blog.rfquerin.org/2009/07/23/ble … cast-no-3/

I'm running #! 8.10 on a Dell Studio XPS13 laptop for the screencasts.

I just ironed out a bug while working with the nodal compositor in Blender. It turns out that if you try to load a tiff file into Blender using Crunchbang 8.10 (not sure about newer versions) it doesn't work. Through some troubleshooting with Troy Sobotka tonight we found out that there is no symlink in /usr/lib which links libtiff.so with libtiff.so.4.2.1  So there wasn't even a libtiff.so file there.

So the Gimp could open tiff files (as could GPicView and Inkscape) but Blender could not for some reason. Providing the symlink fixed the problem. Troy did not have this problem on Ubuntu Jaunty.

Not sure if this is where I should report it, if not, gently point me in the right direction. smile

I have changed it to the revised image, but you were correct about the border not being even. sad See what you think. Maybe go for borderless?

I'll learn not to get so fancy one of these days. wink I think it's probably even safe to say that the preview they give may not exactly match what is produced. For that reason, I think I'll go with Anonymous' suggestion of a borderless option. So remove both and instead, post the following image:

http://rfquerin.org/cbstickers/cb_ninja_sticker_01b.png

Sorry for being such a royal pain in the arse about this. wink

Actually.. it's not that accurate as far as where the border "may" get cut. The template only gives a 'safe' area for important elements. If your important element is a border.. you're basically guessing.

So maybe leave that one in, but also upload this slight alternative which might have a better chance at a border being visible (not that the border will necessarily be even on the sides and the bottom though. sad  Ah well.. let's take a chance:

Hey.. would it be possible to replace that one if need be? I (yes the guy who did up the template files) completely disregarded the bleed area limits.. so the black border has gone poof! in the actual sticker. I would like to revise that image if I can. Let me know if it's a problem. I'll post up the revised version shortly regardless.
