It's third party, and it seems the default permission settings when packing a tarball is without normal user privileges?
I don't know, still doesn't answer my question why it's taboo to compile as root. I suppose I can see an argument to be made about unknown commands hidden during compilation, but that still doesn't quite jive with the fact that an unpacked archive in the user's folder bumps a non-superuser "configure".
So I'm slowly stomping out a whole host of necessary libraries to run this old program called camstream. While searching around for a solution to a particular problem (getting QT4 to be recognized as a multithreaded program during ./configure) I ran into some old, snarky mail list replies that said that a debian user should never configure as root.
funny, though, i don't have permission to configure as a normal user in #! so, what's that all about?
ALSA is a persistent problem all over the internet for linux users. I found one forum thread from 2004; exact same problems. I used to dual-boot crunchbang and windows and alsa is quieter than whatever is running the windows audio. It's just what it is, you know?
I've gone through the xfce gui, the alsamixer gui, the command line, but there's a setting somewhere that's keeping my audio capped. Not a critical bug, but it's certainly annoying when ALSA isn't utilizing the full power of even my puny netbook's little audio card...

Google is "free" for the users, because the users[' behaviors] are the product that Google is selling. I have to agree with rhowaldt, this isn't something that Google is just going to give away for free.
I have to add my thanks to everyone on the first 10 pages of this thread. I stripped Conky down to something more fitting for my little netbook and I wouldn't've know what to do without all the contributions here. Here's what my little work in progress looks like:

seems kind of sketchy. it's only a matter of time before /b/ gets a hold of it!
I've been using gmail and the google calendar thing they have. (It's nice 'cause I got the sports schedules as CSVs and then got them uploaded ^_^ )
I had brightness control before installing the scripts my EEE PC S101. And with the scripts installed, I've got volume control -- finally!
So, for the S101, the scripts do add some function key functionality
FHSM: did you catch any errors in the terminal when installing the scripts?
I'll frontpage that. And I like the custom alien, but is there some backstory on the ninja mascot?

You mean Black-Eye Friday discount?
Did any crazy 3am brawls break out like at this Walmart:

I've had a similar experience with crunchbang dragging it's feet even while the system reports little to no activity from the CPU or out of RAM. It seems to be flash and/or javascript in firefox. With Vista x64 numerous web scripts open, run, and update smoothly. Inside crunchbang I get persistent lockups when even just one script is running.
Though that's mostly conjecture and mostly my perception with testing Google Wave under both operating systems.
I went with hyperion, one of saturn's moons. I always found that astronomy pulls some good names out of history, in this case greek mythology.
brummbaer wrote:easiest solution i've found for this is to use xbindkeys and the gui editor xbindkeys-config, which makes managing custom keys a breeze.
For some reason the XML doesn't seem to process the XF86 signals for me; I can't get any XF86 key to send commands to the command line. However, xbindkeys works, though the GUI is kinda ugly. Not that looks count with such easy functionality.
For now I'm stuck with a laggy command "volwheel -*" but now I can zap those damn ads on Hulu every time they jump up with their extra loud volume!
Interesting. Downloading and testing now.
