Hey I remember you! Welcome back Mehall smile

As for #!, the new welcome script is very handy. Also #! now comes in both Openbox and Xfce varieties. And now that #! is Debian-based, we can having a rolling release (testing/unstable) if we want. I don't really use #! so maybe others can share more.

Care to share what distro/ environment you use now anon?

So, I seem to be getting back into the linux fold again.

Running a Debian server for light video file sharing (apache and utorrent web-client largely)

and I recently got myself a new PC for gaming, meaning the old laptop no longer needs to be running Windows, as I have a separate gaming machine.

The laptop may end up being solely a minecraft server, but I'll be using a gui at least some of the time, so it seems likely it'll be #! again.

The real point of this thread (other than to say I'm still in the top 20 all time posters tongue) is to ask what the current #! experience is like compared to the old ubuntu ones. Not really been using linux regularly on my machine in about 2 years.

If I hadn't lost my graphics card for my old Cyrix M-II 333MHz machine, I'd have it running on there (It's running Debian Squeeze already).

It's 333MHz as aforementioned, but the Cyrix chips were weak in many areas, making them equivalent to a 250MHz Pentium chip.

It has 128MB RAM in it I believe, but as I said: misplaced the graphics card and there's no graphics built into the MoBo, so no Statler on it for me ):

iI'd like to take this oportunity to step into this discussion and sy that a freshly installed windows OS does not give me 1280x800, and that it is much easier to install the standard nVidia binaries on Linux compared to Windows, as windows has many different drivers and you need the right one.

I would also like to point out that Debian free software guidelines (the same ones that mean we use iceweasel not firefox) cause the default debian system, and therefore derivatives, to not use the "non-free" drivers, and that perhaps including the drivers for every graphics card known to man may be a bit out of reach for this small distro.

Corenominal said it hinself, i's easy enough to include support for wifi cards and other such devices, but graphics   drivers are a bit out of scope.

There is plenty of documentation on how to get the drivers running on debian.

486 Openbox version should be downloaded in 25mins, but I don't think I'm gonna get the chance to test it till later on.

And in case you didn't guess, yes, I'm getting the 486 version to try and make it run on that old Cyrix machine! tongue

As you may have noticed, my feed has became active again. This is actually due to a guest writer who I have offered to start writing on my blog.

If you'd prefer, since I rarely write and he won't be writing about Linux or crunchbang, you can remove my feed.

I have no great personal preference, and would happily leave it to you or the community to decide.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Same day as a friend of mine, who is closer to you than to me, location wise.

An ex's birthday is tomorrow, as is my gran's 80th, and it's Burns Day up here in Scotland, and I have a quick week at the start of February?

Quick: what's 9 months ago? *ponders*

I'm using mostly Win7 these days, booting into Crunch for specific things, as I'm on a bit of a gaming binge.

But when I was still using Crunch more than Win, I was always hitting F12 in Windows trying to get yakuake, generally to see what was happening in IRC

It'll almost certainly affect your battery life, likely severely.

Congrats Arp!

I got the Android phone I've been using for a fortnight tongue

I also got an inflatable sumo suit and a few other things. Bought myself some games on the Steam sale. Considering getting a joystick for X3 and (when it appears) Jumpgate Evolution.

So tomorrow, on the way through to Edinburgh to see the girlfriend, I'm picking up my xmas present from my mum and dad, but I get it straight away:

T-Mobile Pulse.

The first time I've had an actual decent phone, and it's an Android Smart phone at that.

Iceweasel is firefox, but because of the patches that debian apply to it, mozzila dodn't want it to be branded firefox (and debian cant use the original icon 'couse it's not free). Ubuntu and others patch FF too, but ok it with mozilla to be able to use the name & icon (otherwise you need to use the unbranded verison).

a.

Actually, it's not Mozilla disagreeing about the patches, it's the Debian Free factor kicking in. As you said, logo ain't free, so Debian don't regard it as something they want to distribute, in line with their policy.

I have a Sony Ericcson D750i, which is the same as... I think it's the W800? So the old version of the 890i you developed the theme for. I may have to see if I can use it.

+1 for Debian.

Personally, I think it would be kinda neat if #! looses its Ubuntu-training-wheels smile

Besides, this Karmic screen flickering is getting annoying!

How about we ditch the Ubuntu training wheels and go for an Arch (AUR) base?

If you're using Arch, you should be able to build a #!-esque system yourself, no need for anything pre-built. It, in fact, defeats major parts of the Arch Philosophy.

Arch has it's place, but #! is not one of them. Debian gets my vote.

I forgot to mention wine.

I was never a big wine fan, but I worked in a hotel that does a lot of weddings, and to ensure we could be relied on for information by the guests, we had a wine tasting session.

I prefer Red, though will drink white on occasion. Also, I prefer South American or Australian wines generally, with European being second, and Californian etc last (but will still drink a wine of reasonable quality.)
