Topic: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

New CrunchBang Statler images are available now. The new images were built on Wednesday 5th January 2011 and feature all package updates available at that time from the Debian Squeeze and CrunchBang Statler repositories.

These updated Statler images feature the following changes:

  • Google Chrome installed as the default browser.

  • A new live-installer, as used by the LMDE project.

  • Plymouth graphical boot loader enabled by default after installation.

  • Improved font rendering.

  • Improved post-installation script, providing optional installs of Liquorix/Zen kernel and Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment with browser plugin.

  • Back to black artwork.

  • 100s of additional plugins and filters for GIMP via the 'gimp-plugin-registry' package.

  • Updated Dropbox packages and Thunar Dropbox extensions installed by default.

  • Pino replaced by Heybuddy, a micro blogging Indenti.ca client.

  • Xfce menu fixed for applications requiring root privileges.

  • Missing 'wireless-tools' package is now included.

  • Viewnior image viewer rebuilt without the GNOME specific features.

  • Updated Elementary icons.

Existing Statler users should not need to perform a reinstall, instead a simple 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' should suffice.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR UNETBOOTIN USERS: CrunchBang images will more than likely fail to work if copied to USB devices with Unetbootin. Please use the recommended method for creating USB installation media.

As always with CrunchBang, this release is not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system. Anyone who uses CrunchBang should be comfortable with occasional or even frequent breakage. Remember, CrunchBang Linux could make your computer go CRUNCH! BANG! smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

Nice one smile I'm away for the weekend but will have a look in a few days. I'm looking forward to seeing the recent bug fixes and changes implemented as a complete build.

how many of your servers are seeding anyway (just saw the number of seeds, quite high after 3h is it not?)

it is still christmas! big_smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

OH how I love this! 1 minor nag though -  I generally despise Googly things especially Chrome, could you atleast make it an option in the setup script to have Iceweasel your default browser? Other than that, I'm loving this! Thanks again!

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

...just gets better and better... cool

(except I'm not quite sure about Chrome either - but I'd probably replace it or Iceweasel with Firefox 4 anyway)

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

Is there a way I can upgrade without installing Chrome? I know I can just remove it later, but consider this "for science" tongue

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Actually if you do an "dist-upgrade" it does not seem to automatically install Chrome (atleast it didn't for me).

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

^ Indeed, I just tried dist-upgrading. Something might be wrong here?

Anyway, was dropping in to share I'm getting an awesome dl speed of 1.20MB/s! Usually I'm getting ~300kb/s, so I'm pretty surprised about the speed!

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

"dist-upgrade" will not automatically add/remove any end-user applications (by design). smile

If you want to install Chrome, simply "sudo apt-get install google-chrome-stable" and if you want to install Iceweasel "sudo apt-get install iceweasel". There is a menu item to set your preferred browser and other preferred apps.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

Why it can't work with Unetbootin to do the USB key ?

Performing an upgrade should not install Chrome. I modified the meta packages to include Chrome OR Iceweasel, so anybody who has installed Statler prior to this release will not automatically get Chrome. I thought this was the fairest way to do it. smile

Honestly, I am not sure, I have not had time to look. Also, the dd method is fairly straightforward and just works, which has meant I have been less inclined to investigate the Unetbootin issues.

Hey Philip.

I just wanted to say thanks. Not just for this latest release but for producing a fine distro from day one.

@corenominal - how often will you be updating the Statler images?

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" r20110105

I just installed the new XFCE-Version as a virtualbox-guest and tweaked it a bit (opera instead of chrome, geeqie, sl,..). Did I miss the option to auto-use the whole disk? I had to scratch my head a bit to dig out which partitions I have to use, but it worked flawslessly.

Thank you for your work, corenominal, much appreciated!
