Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Hi Andrea, you can certainly use pypanel (the panel from 8.04) in 8.10 if you prefer. Just 'sudo apt-get install pypanel' then add it to your autostart.sh in place of lxpanel. You might also want to copy over its configuration from your 8.04 install.

Also check out 8.10 lite, it uses tint2/trayer, which I think is very nice on the eee. You can use it on the Full version too with this tutorial: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … t2-trayer/

Are there other things you prefer about Crunchbang 8.04 over 8.10 that you want to discuss here?

Bye.

Hello andrea smile

pypanel is a great panel and I would imagine the feature you mention is really handy for Eee PC users. FWIW, it can be installed on 8.10.01 with the terminal command:

sudo apt-get install pypanel

pypanel was swapped for lxpanel for the latest release, but nothing is set in stone when it comes to CrunchBang, it may well return, especially if somebody picks up its development.

P.S. Welcome to the forums. smile

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Good informations, thank you! Ill test again 8.10 this weekend.
And yes, space is very important. I have 7" display.
8.04 vs. 8.10? The first seems to me, how can I say, more responsive. And boot faster. I tested both on SDcards, could be some imperfection in
something.

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Being a huge Gnome fan, I've gnomified (and blue-ified too) my CrunchBang 8.10 on my eeepc 701, and added a feature I've found in Ubuntu Netbook Remix: Maximus, a window-manager daemon that enables you to run an application full screen.
https://launchpad.net/maximus
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/maximus
Now all the screen is used,at its maximum, and there's just the essential, no more titlebars... Every inch is important on a eeepc's screen!  big_smile

When running any operating system from a solid state disk (SSD), USB flash drive, or SD card, it's a good idea to limit disk activity. Here are some tricks I've picked up; what are some others?

1. Don't use a swap partition. Drawback: Hibernate doesn't work.

Isn't a swap partition a useful feature, especially on an low-spec machine? Also, assuming I want to keep the hibernate feature, how much swap should I allocate? 2GB to match my RAM?

Hi Foomandoonian, I personally do have a 2gb swap partition on my eee, as it has a conventional 160gb hard drive instead of a SSD. There is much debate within the eee community about whether or not a swap partition shortens the lifespan of a flash-based SSD; some people feel it is a real danger, while others believe that even under constant use, their SSD will last for years. Since the eee hasn't been around that long, we really don't know yet. smile

To enable hibernate, I believe the swap must be equal to or greater than your ram.

As to the performance question, a swap partition is only necessary if you run out of ram. I have never come close to using all 1gb of ram on my eee under normal use. The only time I can remember going into swap was when I had a few different virtual machines running at the same time in virtualbox. I do not personally consider my eee a "low-spec machine" as my previous laptop was a 500mhz pentium 3 with 256mb of ram. High/low spec is relative. smile

Very true! The same thought has crossed my mind before...

And thanks for your answer. big_smile

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Hey all.

First, I must say I am quite impressed with this Linux distro. I found out about it through this forum post when I was googling for a way to use dropbox without nautilus. An hour later, I have a fresh install of #! on my Eee 1000 big_smile

Installation went very smooth, and with the kernels from array.org and elmurato's scripts everything 'just works'.

The one thing I didn't like is that font sizes are a bit too big, what with the limited screen resolution for Eee PCs and all. I will see if I can find a way to change them, I'm sure I just missed something -- openbox is quite new to me. smile

Welcome to the forums!

From memory (I am logged into Puppy Linux right now, boo!!!!) you just have to go Preferences->User Interface, and you can set your default system fonts and font sizes there. (Edit: my memory was incorrect; see below)

I believe the terminal has its own font in Edit->Preferences (from the Terminator) window, which is very handy if your terminal tends to get cut off on the small screen.

Good luck!

I have the same issue. Your advice is absolutely correct, and making this change does improve things, but not all of the fonts! I'll post some screenshots if it helps...

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

My mistake, the correct place to change the fonts is Preferences->Openbox->GUI Config Tool->Appearance tab. smile

This fixeds most things, which is great, but I'm sure there is at least one default outstanding. It seems that any body text (eg: unstyled web text, xpad or tomboy notes, Xchat text) is still pretty large.

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Hi just wanted to say thank you for a great distro - your latest iso works totally ootb - I love the OB interface - I put the panel to the left of the screen - I think it works well there on the 901.

I have tried xandros - ubuntu - eee ubuntu, ubuntu eee, debian lenny, puppy 4.1.1, Arch (way beyond me) I think this is tops. Still need to play a bit - f2 toggle aint working but I'm sure that easily fixed.

On the topic of smaller footprint programs for eee I like seamonkey over firefox it also comes with an html editor and mtpaint is much slimmer than gimp for photo editing.

Thanks

Hello Cimh and welcome to the forums. smile I am glad to read you are enjoying CrunchBang on your Eee PC. Please do not hesitate to leave more feedback, if and when you have any. Out of interest, what function does F2 toggle have on the 901?

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Hi everybody,

Fn + F2 key in 901 is used to enable/disable wireless. I also have a 901 and what i did was installing the kernel from arrary.org and eee-control from synaptic, it is working with that.

The keys are not working for me are Fn + F8 and Fn + F9 (decrease and raise volume) is there a way to make them work?

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

hi all,  i have spent quite a while jumping from distro to distro.  In the end however i always came back to ubuntu because of its popularity and as a result support.  trouble with it is i am somewhat of a control freak and i like things slim and quick.  i just happened to stumble upon crunchbang and have to say that it is perfect!  absolutely great.  i have a 901 and after installing cruncheee along with elmurato's scripts things work great.

however, i did notice one small thing.  i used to be able to press the power button and have it turn off, after installing the scripts it does nothing.  i have installed the scripts on ubuntu before and i know that they fiddle around with the powerbutton's settings.  i am unsure/unable to get the gui that came with the scripts to load and also dont see an icon by the clock like i did with plain ubuntu.  any one have any suggestions?

finally a little detail, it seems that the default volume icon on the taskbar in openbox does not match up with the systems volume, any way i can correct this?

thanks all love the distro !

you can do this in openbox without installing additional other stuff.

add/ alter this at the bottom of rc.xml.

    <application name="*">
      <decor>no</decor>
      <maximized>yes</maximized>

//this means all windows that open will not have the decoration at the top and will me maximized. have fun.

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

was to lazy to check if its already posted, but to limit disk activity (longer livin ssd) you can:

1. use ext2 for partitioning

2. use the noatime option (i think in /etc/fstab not sure you'll find it when you search)

Welcome! I would recommend trying a newer release... 8.10 has reached its "end of life" and is no longer supported. Newer releases will have newer audio/video codecs, better hardware support, etc.

9.04 is the current Ubuntu-based stable release (supported through Oct. 2010), and "Statler" is the alpha-testing version of the upcoming Debian-based release. I personally find that video performance is better with Statler than with previous versions, if you are comfortable dealing with the challenges of alpha software it is my recommendation.

(edit) ps if the jerky playback is specifically with streaming media from the web, try downloading it first then playing it from your hard drive with VLC. I find that Youtube video, for example, is a little jerky on both of my netbooks (due to the weak hardware specs I presume), but I can play the video no problem if I download it first.

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

Ah thats awesome.. my experience is that debian is much faster and more stable. I tried Lenny on my eee 900 once but there was some hardware issues i never manage to solwe...

Now when running Statler live on my eee 900 I have no sound and wifi doesen't seam to work...

I'll create a thread for this issues on the Statler develop forum since this thread is a bit old.

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/68305/#p68305

please share your experience in that thread

8.10 is sort of outdated, i use version 10 and i havent encountered any difficulties on my eeepc 1000h so far except for the wireless not working but i managed with the help of the comunity to get it working

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

is Crunchee still available ? because when i seach for it i seam to be redirected to latest version.....

Re: CrunchBang on the eee pc

^ No crunchee anymore, but I think for most EeePC current #!Statler does work well: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … epc-1005p/

Just have to add acpi_osi=Linux to the boot line in Grub. If you need help, tell.
