Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

Moving from my 900a EeePC to a just picked up:

Name: IBM x31 Thinkpad
CPU: 1.6 Pentium M
HDD: 4200 40gb
Graphics: Radeon 7000
Display: 12.1'' Matte
Optical: None
Battery: 6 cell, still with 97% capacity
Network: Intel a/b/g

Thoughts: While startup is a bit slower on the x31 than the 900a (with an upgraded SSD), overall much more a pleasure to use. Full, responsive keyboard and larger screen make long writing session much more enjoyable. Openbox doesn't push the graphics too hard, though full screen flash is a hair shaky (though this is likely the fault of flash rather than the graphics.) Most everything (wireless included) configured out of the box, with just the Trackpoint needed a bit of HAL work to get scrolling enabled.

I think I've found a winner (for me) in the weight / usability / price competition.   Haven't run out the battery yet, but am keen to see what kind of life I can pump out of it.

If anyone's in the market for a upgraded 900a eeePC feel free to PM me...I don't need three #! systems.

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

My new toy, picked it up today for £115, good condition, original factory load of win98.
Got a bit of moisture in the screen though, will try and sort it out soon because it's annoying when trying to browse the web.

Laptop 2: Panasonic Toughbook CF-27 (E series)
OS: Crunchbang 9.04.1 Standard (Originally Wingdoze98)
CPU: Intel Mobile Pentium II 298.416MHz 256KB cache
HDD: 6.5GB encased in a 10mm thick gel compound.
Network: No onboard lan/wlan. 56k Modem + GPRS Modem on ttyS2 (can't get it to do much though). Currently using a USB wifi dongle +ndiswrapper.
Graphics: Neomagic Onboard Shared.
Screen: 12.1" TFT @ 800x600 (max) + a red stuck pixel that I've named Paul.
Sound: Yamaha, dunno any other details, but it works tongue
Ram: (Originally 128MB) Reporting as 256MB, but should be 384MB(384 is the max, according the the user manual)! I found a seccond ram slot, so I installed a 256mb module in, but it runs at 133mhz rather than 100 so maybe the onboard 128mb ram is too slow to be used with the 133mhz ram???

It works almost perfectly out of the box, I just have to supply vga=789 and acpi=force into grub, and it works really well!
The laptop also has a neat OSD built into the graphics controller, so I can push FN+F9 and it shows the battery status. Is it common to see this in laptops, or have I just got a nice extra?
Oh yeah.... youtube is absolutely useless on this thing tongue
Might put crunchbang on my newer dual core laptop, if I can be bothered to move my stuff over, and then configure it the way I like it etc..

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

Ok, installed #! on my server, simply because I was fed up with Ubuntu Server being soooo slow to load a GUI.
Server 2: My awesome little HP Pavillion 8670
OS: Crunchbang 9.04.1 Standard
CPU: Intel Pentium 3 533MHz (it runs at about 510 because the PSU is on its way out)
HDD: 80gb, 40 if it's booting up in a bad mood
Network: Some generic 10/100 PCI card.
Graphics: Um... dunno. I think it's an Nvidia Riva TNT 64mb, but I'm not certain.
Screen: 16" CRT
Sound: 16bit ISA Sound blaster card, pinched out of an old 386, although I've never bothered to set it up.
Ram: 256mb, but I had a bit of an accident.... ESD on one of my modules, so it's running with 64mb less.

Re: Your CrunchBang Linux system

Using 9.04.1 on all of this stuff...

HP Pavilion N3410

  • AMD K6-2+ 500mhz processor with 128k L2 cache built-in (originally 550mhz, but I killed it with static electricity and bought a 500mhz to replace it)

  • VIA MVP4 chipset

  • Trident Cyberblade i7 video with 8MB shared memory

  • 384MB RAM

  • 10GB hard disk

  • CD-ROM drive

  • 1 USB 1.1 port

  • 1 PS/2 port

  • 800x600 passive matrix screen  (sucks, but it's what I have)

Capable of using 1 PC Card at a time.  This changes between the following:
* TrendNet 10/100 Realtek network card
* TrendNet 54mbs Realtek wireless card
* Generic NEC-based USB 2.0 card
I also use a TP-LINK Wireless USB adapter with it as well, depending on what is needed.

Cons:  Primarily that it does not support APM on this laptop due to its age.  Even after forcing it to be in it does not work.  When shutting the system down the power button has to be pressed in order to turn it off.  I do not know if it supports the PowerNow capability for the K6-2+ processor.  Debian does support APM and PowerNow on this system.

Another con (not related to CB) is that if you aren't careful this laptop will overheat.  I replaced the compound that is between the CPU and the heatsink and the cooling fan but it still appears to crash if pushed too hard. PowerNow really helps with this.

I also have two external hard disks with CrunchBang installs.  One is a 8GB laptop drive with the normal CB install, the other is a 3GB laptop drive with a CB Lite install.  These can be used with any computer that can boot from USB (or with a floppy that can make them boot from USB).  No proprietary drivers are installed to either one.

What I normally boot from usb:
Shuttle XPC S51G with no drive cage or cover

  • Celeron 2ghz

  • 640MB RAM

  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 AGP video card with 128MB RAM

  • 4 x USB 2.0 ports

  • 3 x FW400 ports

  • Built-in 10/100 and sound

Screen:  10" @ 1366x768

Graphics:  Intel GMA 500
Sound:  Inel
Network: Broadcom 43xx 802.11n
OS: Crunchbang upgraded to 9.10

Thoughts: Not a bad little laptop. The biggest pain is getting around the GMA500 screwup by Intel but I found an easy to use script that installed them and integrated them into the kernel. not being able to upgrade the RAM is another huge downside. Crunchbang is easily faster than anything else I've run on it including the original Ubuntu 8.04 install that it came with. It really feels like a whole new computer.
