Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

Thanks ADcomp, very nice work!
Only a question: if I right-click a on adeskbar,  then click "preferences", nothings happens. Can I run that GUI in other way?
(madbox 9.10.2)

I have sometimes this strange behavior too .. but I don't know where is buggy.  hmm
So you can simply close and restart adeskbar ( alt+f2 => adeskbar ) .. This usually works fine.

Thanks for comment  smile

more fantastic work ADcomp big_smile You have a great set of iso's to choose from at the moment smile

!! this is a very 'special' madbox .. no taskbar, no systray, xbmc can somtimes crash (segment fault) with video, no install ( ubiquity )
!! xbmc uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) multimedia framework and OpenGL graphics rendering .. this basically means that it needs 3D capable GPU graphics hardware controller for all rendering

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

I may give it a try. I run xbmc on my media center, and once I get my 2TB drive back was going to upgrade to karmic anyway. Looks good big_smile

I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

I'm checking out the XFCE version in a virtual box right now, and I must say, it's very nice! (How do you say "I'm impressed" in French... je suis impressioné? smile)

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

ADcomp, you had a marvelous idea!    I would install, if possible, Madbox/xbmc on a little bootable partition on my multimedia portable hard disk. It is exactly what i was looking for this purpose.
Seems to work fine till now. On live, I installed adeskbar on it to manage some little other tricks I installed. Can I use Ubiquity?

...ehm... perhaps little too soon, but why dont you consider to make a simple alternative desktop - a crunchbang/lite/notebookremix,for example.
Some friends said - WOW, this is a graphical masterpiece, I want it for my notebook!

Just a little question, In Madbox opening xfburn causes a -failed to initialize gtstreamer transcoder-. Is it possible to bypass this message?
And, in xbmc/madbox, how can I recover a minimized window?

Thanks in advance

I think so .. but take care when install/configure booloader (grub) .. choose your external HD !

EDIT: please ignore my post

I tried another time with wget -c and this time no error 403.....
i guess i just need to learn to be patient

sorry again

Hi ADcomp,

as always your work looks beautiful, I am actually sure it is fantastic but....
i tried to download the xbmc version, but the download keeps getting disconnected, so I tried to experiment with wget....
after finding out that i could use -c to resume a broken download i managed to get to approx. 40 % but now I get error 403...

crunchbang@crunchbang:/media/disk/_____Others____/Downloads$ wget -c http://download.tuxfamily.org/madbox/ma … 1-i386.iso
--2009-11-24 18:42:27--  http://download.tuxfamily.org/madbox/ma … 1-i386.iso

I am not an expert, so I was wondering if there is anything i can do to complete the download

thanks

I installed gstramer , gstreamer-plugins-base & libgstreamer-plugins-base. Everything OK now!

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

@ mcarni : maybe server is slowdown ( too many users downloading madbox ?  wink )

@ Kuno : ok .. I add gstreamer next time.

Ty! bye

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

@ Kuno: ok, it works for me also, thanks.

@ ADcomp: I try to explain my idea. On a netbook display ( 9" or 10", but even less) the all-black-screen with the big square button is visually
                   pleasant and friendly.

If packaged, installable and configurable like a "big adeskbar", it could be launched immediately after the login. Then, if needed, you can
kill it and return to your usual desktop appearance.

Nothing original, I know, but imho interesting for who use small distros (crunchbang-lite, slitaz, debris, etc.) on small screens. ( And/or,
like me, have a wife or a ...ehm... mother-in-law: "How ?@! can I open internet on this crunch-what????")

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

@ andrea :  Ok .. simply press "ESC" to exit  minimal UI.

If I have time , I try to make a package  ( and maybe add some GUI for config ? )

One question .. Why don't you install "Netbook Launcher" ( easy-to-use program/places/favourites launcher of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix ) ?
It has a good  look'n feel ( more than mine wink ).. I tried it sometime ago and the new release looks even better.

Re: Madbox : liveUsb / toram

@ ADcomp: ESC, ok.

I know the Netbook Remix, but it maintains all the screen panels, clocks, appletts, tabs, mini launchers, etc; it is an alternative desktop,
not a launcher-screen-only like yours. And, trying to show more possible informations, remains crowed and visually "baroque", I feel so.
Instead, a choice between "all-black-screen-launcher" (better if configurable) and (click!) your usual customized desktop could increase
the usability of a light-distro, like Madbox. Or Crunchbang.

Dont waste your time for me only, if no one else is interested. And thanks again for your helpfulness.

hi david,
a very good work on your madbox-xfce, i've put it on an usb stick and use it as a rescue/demo distro.
thanks for your work smile

Hello ..

jotapesse wrote:

yes and no .. I use xfce as main desktop and openbox for 'extra/special' desktop. Because xfce has a all-in-one config ( composite , settings , ..  ) and well , It works fine for me smile
