Topic: Huawei E220 mobile broadband dongle works well with #!

Just thought this might interest any #! users thinking of buying a mobile broadband USB dongle in the UK.
I have been using my Huawei E220, connected to the 3 network, with #! 8.10 with absolutely no problems at all.
When I first plugged the dongle in it was detected and I was asked to choose my provider and configure some basic settings. I was online inside two minutes - this couldn't really be any easier.
Highly recommended combination! big_smile

As does the E169G, which was what I was given on signing up with '3'.

I've had a similar experience with 3's Huawei dongle/s.

Plug it in and you are good to go straight away!

Re: Mobile dongle - Thanks. I'm probably going to rush out and buy one tomorrow so I'm not stranded over Christmas without internets. I gather Vodafone are Linux-savvy...

It's gotta be an eee, surely?

Foomandoonian - it's true that Vodafone do have some linux software for their dongles (which can also be used for dongles from 3, maybe some of the other providers too) but it is horribly unstable.  Network Manager 0.7 is a much more reliable option.

I'll give you one piece of advice as an Eee 1000 user, and then let this thread return to topic: There is always a better Eee around the corner! For me, it is the 1002. I've been wanting one since the original, but there was always a more promising one just a few months away... neutral If you like what you see, grab it. They're coming down in price all the time - maybe you can get another one next year. wink

Agreed, they have certainly developed quickly. I remember looking at the Eee PC 700 this time last year. I nearly ordered one, but opted for a cheap Acer notebook instead. In hindsight, I am glad I have waited.

Huawei E160G works flawlessly. Plugged in, detected by Network Manager. No problems smile

Vodafone do provide software (it's written in Python, I think) which allows you to manage your mobile broadband in Linux, and it works with pretty much every provider, not just Vodafone.
I used it a while back when I was trying 3/Huawei with an install of AntiX Mepis, and it worked fine - it's handy to be able to monitor your download levels so you don't exceed your monthly limit and incur extra charges.
I didn't use it for too long, but I found it to be reasonably stable.
You could probably live without it if you're only using mobile broadband occasionally and don't run the risk of going over your allowance.

Strangely, I also have a Nokia N95 on Three and web access from the same location is almost unusable. I have had no issues at all with the new modem. I am not too sure why this would be the case!?

N95 have terrible reception and are quite happy to default back to 2G when the signal is less than 100%, whereas your dongle is constantly forced in 3G mode.

I figured it to be as much. A colleague, who is also with Three, manages to get a good signal with his phone in the same location. I love my N95, but at the same time I cannot wait for the contract to expire so that I can dump it for something else. Thank you for confirming my suspicions. smile

I got rid of my HTC Wizard (O2 XDA Mini-S over here) to get my N95, worse thing I ever did. Sure, it was Windows Mobile 5 but I never had a issue with it.

I got a free upgrade to 6.1 from HTC, still pretty poo but they've got a version of Android working on some HTC handsets now so the future is looking bright...

Ahh yes, I remember that WM6 was "available" for the Wizards though a unofficial release big_smile. Android is a dream for HTC, as they'll have little to no licensing costs for the OS, whereas they have to pay a fixed fee to MS per WM handset sold.
