Topic: What are your favourite Linux applications?

So, what are your favourite Linux applications? Popular or obscure, niche or general, useful or fun! Try to include a brief line about what makes the app great.

  • Firefox, naturally. (I use about 30 add-ons, but I'm trying to install less this time around)

  • Gimp. I don't exactly love it, but without a powerful graphics app, I just wouldn't consider Linux.

  • Inkscape is really slick. A good set of features and a nice UI. One of the most polished apps, IMO.

  • Tomboy Notes. I used Xpad for about 30 seconds, and then installed Tomboy. Simple but so handy!

  • Kate for coding. I really want something more like Notepad++ though. I'm trying to switch to gedit at the moment, to see if I miss anything.

  • Transmission for torrents. Simple and easy, in a good way.

I know that's all pretty basic stuff. What gems am I missing out on? big_smile

Swiftfox: browser, 1 theme & adblock+
Pidgin: IM
Claws mail: mail
gFTP: file transfer
Gimp: photo editing
Rubyripper: music ripper
Dia: diagram editor
OOo: doc's/ spreadsheets
NW Collector JR Lite: java based collecting software
HPtools: check ink status

opera for browsing, mutt maildrop getmail, and mmsmtp for mail, w3 for text browsing, mplayer for music and video. 

I usually need Japanese input, so scim-anthy and scim. 
OpenOffice for documents, catdoc and/or antiword and xls2csv for dealing with them in terminal.  Urxvt for a terminal. 

Those are the ones I use most often.  Flux or open box for X, xbuffy or gbuffy for watching mailboxes.

Great topic! Here is my list:

  • cowsay, because it is useless and brings a smile to my face.

  • gedit, because I spend all day long in it. I think it is very underrated.

  • Rhythmbox,  because it plays my music, has a UI which fits my logic and is rock stable.

  • bash, because I could not work without it.

  • rsync, ^^.

  • ssh, ^^.

  • cron, because it takes care of business when I am in the land of nod. big_smile

There's one app I think is very underrated: Decibel Audio Player.
It's a simple audio player written in python (whatever that means), it's light on system resources and looks clean and minimal.

I also like the usual favourites: Firefox, Claws, Deluge... This distro is full of great apps (I sound like a suck-up but #! introduced me to some of them)

first place for me: mpd audio player with sonata or ncmpc for client.
and comes: the Gimp, Inkscape for graphics
claws/pidgin for web communication
epiphany for web browser (since #! 7.10 wink )
abiword/gnumeric for office suite
conky for system report
python for all thoose scripts that we use everyday
apt , the best deb manager ever made
audacity & avidemux for audio/video editor
catfish for search engine
grip for cdripp, many,many,many options...
and to finish with, remastersys that i discover with #!

and thanks for this topic, a very good way to replace the "ubuntu popularity contest" smile
maybe could we made statistcs at the end of the topic ( if it ends one day big_smile )

conky - adds some eyecandy to my desktop and lets me see various stats
CrossOver Games - I found it to work much better than Wine and because of it I was finally able to switch to Linux for good.
Firefox - just simply my favorite browser
fluxbox and/or openbox - first time I tried these window managers I noticed a significant difference in speed. I never knew how slow Gnome was big_smile
Nicotine+ - for downloading music
OpenOffice.org - very good office suite
Pidgin - nice IM client and that looks great under Linux
Transmission - very light bittorrent client

My typical installation includes:

LXDE: To manage my desktop
Opera/Firefox: Web browsers
OpenOffice: The whole suite
R: For statistical Analyses
Rhythmbox: For Music
Brasero: To Burn in Hell
Gimp/Inkscape: For graphics
Scite: Text editor
Risk: My favourite game
Conky: To monitor my system
VLC/Totem: For watching DVD
Pidgin: To communicate with my folks

And you can't forget:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install <package_name>
sudo shutdown -h now
sudo reboot

And perhaps my favourite:

sudo make-me-a-sandwich

Mmm, If I go by apps I use the most regular

Terminator, Firefox, irssi, rtorrent, hellanzb, lottanzb (plug plug), pidgin, gwibber, rythmnbox (used to use amarok)

To manage my desktop: Openbox, tint+trayer+wbar,
File manager: Thunar or pcmanfm
Audio player: Consonance (uses gtk themes) or Xmms (winamp clone). Right now I'm using cplay - a cli app that just plays my mp3 files.
Text editor: Mousepad or Leafpad
Picture viewer: gpicview or Mirage
Video player/conversion: VLC or Mplayer
IM: Pidgin
Web browser: Firefox (addons). Since I installed #! lite I'm using Kazehakase.
System Monitoring: Conky

All of these applications are lightweight (except Firefox and VLC), simple, fast and do the task(s) they were made for.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Did you mean which Server I was using? I usually just play against the computer, and don't connect to any server.

Audacity for recording/editing.

Rhythmbox

Gxine because its light and easily configurable.

Nano was introduced to me when I was using Arch (for editing some configuration files). Been a fan since.

dd makes writing images to usb so easy. Again, from Arch wiki.

kill just when linux starts acting like windows. tongue

Seamonkey for browsing because its really light and fast.

Cheese Webcam app. I had given up on trying various tools to get my webcam working. I *seriously* wonder why its not included in Ubuntu Studio and why I didn't read anything about it before. Got to know through #!.
