Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

I thought i had tried XMMS but it looks like I was looking at XMMS2 (which is only a backend). I just tried out XMMS. And as to audacious I have it but never use it. Both of them seem like old school winamp before it got the media library, which frankly is the biggest thing i like about it (which is why so far I have been using rhythmbox: it has a medialibrary, I just don't like it much).
Thanks for the suggestions though.

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

irssi & lynx (though they go on my windows machines too =P)

normally KDE apps (I'm an ex-kubuntu user)

erm... most of my favourite apps are win/linux ones tbh. (Hell, even the KDE apps are)

though I DO love me some nano.

@Madcrow, is Asunder good?

I have recently been using:
- pcmanfm and I like a lot, probably mostly because of the tabs. First I was think I would miss Thunar but no.
- newbeuter, definitely best CLI feed reader I have tried
- Quod Libet has been working for me very well. I like the UI a lot.

Good and enough for me; it' s very simple to use; used also in Slitaz

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

Coming from the windows-world and beeing used to it, most important for me is a nice quick two-pane-filemanager.

My favourite: XFE

Second in: gnome-commander  -  because with gc it´s just one click to access the (windows-) smb-shares, i need in the office.

Office-Suite: SoftMaker Office. It´s not free, but for me it´s worth the money feature- and performance-wise.

Rhythmbox - coz it works
Aria - Great downloader (esp for rapidshare
Balsa - Email

XChat if you want a gui, but I swear to <insert generic higher-being's name here> that irssi is the best one I have used. It's worth learning the commands for it, and it's so extensible.

If GUI is opted for and it really doesn't matter outside of that, Pidgin will work fine.  It isn't like XChat has many more bells and whistles, and you can cut the installation clutter by going with an IM that can do IRC.

I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Actually, fair point, I used to use Pidgin for IRC for a while.

I stopped because I was never on irc.

Nowadays I have an irssi up in screen on an ssh access box in the computer science dept. I'm studying at. (University)

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

After a clean install of 8.10.02 I have to add osmo to my list.

I've been looking for a little gem like this for some time. It suits my needs perfectly big_smile

From the project page:
Osmo is a handy personal organizer, which includes calendar, tasks manager and address book modules. It was designed to be a small, easy to use and good looking PIM tool to help to manage personal information. In its current state the organizer is quite convenient to use - for example, the user can perform nearly all operations using the keyboard. Also, a lot of parameters are configurable to meet the user's preferences. On the technical side, Osmo is GTK+ based tool which uses a plain XML database to store all personal data.

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

I have to agree with omns. Osmo is great. Does everything I need it to do in a tiny little package. Love that you can control everything from the keyboard, if you want.

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

I just discovered gnome-commander. I'm really psyched to have found it. It is a heavy lifting sort of file-manager (not pretty but very useful and well designed).  I think I'm going to end up using Thunar for quickly opening files (if i know where they are), but keep GC around for all the actual management (moving, changing permissions, network drives etc.).

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

Wow, a lot of stuff's been mentioned here that I hadn't heard of.  I'm going to have to try some of it out this weekend.

I've been in love with Songbird since I tried it.  It's got a bit more brawn than I normally like on a music player, but it works great on linux and it's got an awesome set of features.

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

Mines :

Wicd (insteadof network manager, connects far faster)
The Battle of Wesnoth (strategic game)
Firefox (Foxmarks module is just too useful)
IDesk (for icons on Desktop)
LXappearance (to easy integrate GTK applications)
Pypanel
Nitrogen
Open office
gimp
conky..
Audacious (changed the skin to a minimalist one)
VlC (changed skin)
Cairo-Dock

I never thought to list a webapp. I use Netvibes all the time too, and love it.

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

i've started to learn an ergonomic keyboard layout, even though i'm just at the beginning (started today) i can already feel how much better it works.

http://colemak.com/FAQ for english users, didn't try it but i think you should if english is your native tongue/ most typed language

http://www.neo-layout.org/ is was i use, it's optimized for the german language

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

Two of my favorite Linux applications are command line tools.

apt-cache search

will search the names and descriptions of all the packages available. Great for finding hidden gems via apt.

apropos

will search through all man pages for a string. Great for us who can't remember ....

Re: What are your favourite Linux applications?

terminal : xfce4-terminal
panel : tint2 + trayer + netwmpager
monitoring : conky
web browser : Opera (+ Firefox)
FTP client : gFTP (used to use FileZilla but gFTP seems to do its job as I ask it, so I kept it)
torrents : Deluge (more complete than Transmission, but I also like the simplicity of Transmission)
IM : Pidgin + Skype
text editor : gedit (for colors in code ... usefull to detect typing errors)
office : OpenOffice.org 3 (to be able to read f**king MS Office 2007 files)
music : Rhythmbox (good managing of enormous library)
video : SMPlayer (the best MPlayer frontend in my opinion)
graphics : Gimp (with iscan for better use of my Epson scanner) + Inkscape
mail client : Thunderbird (think about testing Sylpheed but wait to be sure that the complete importation from thunderbird is possible)
CD/DVD burning : Brasero (think about testing xfburn)

Sylpheed has a very nice integration with Gmail, and offers allmost the same functionality as Claws ! smile
