this was the time when i was growing up

later i was seaching for unix based systems
i don`t like MS so ill tryed everything to get an other os
linux is an different world and i allways disliked that the games out there are for windows...
since i know WINE and Winex (cedega) every door is open for me and linux

i would call it an optical and emotional minimal techno what this distro represent (if you like it;i do)

i like the community

i like its speed

i like the posibillity to hack(txt data) about every single config file(.bashrc_conky_ and so on)

i need to learn much more cause i want my education in this direction.
in german its called"fachinformatiker_systemintegration_netzwerktechnik"

i like its stability

i like its look and feel...

this is the first distro i would love to call it my home...

nebenbei "flux flux" is auch gut nur ich komm mit dieser distro nich online... is auch gut so sonnst währe ich nich hier gelandet...

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

Everything else is just too slow and difficult to configure.  Gnome, KDE, XFCE, they're all too bloated and slow.  LXDE was quick, but difficult to configure.  Just try and add something to the menu or get a program to start at boot.  It's a pain.  In Crunchbang just edit the menu with obmenu and edit the autostart.sh to start a program at boot.  To add a keyboard shortcut, edit the rc.xml.  I've also found that for whatever reason, LXDE and XFCE don't want to let me edit the mouse sensitivity.  So, I need to use xset m 6 2.  Since it's difficult to start programs at boot on other desktop managers to set my mouse sensitivity with xset, I prefer openbox because it just works.

Also, the Crunchbang Panel.  I wanted a panel that was easy to configure and add program launcher icons and could let me use the openbox menu.  It also includes a calender, clock, tray, and an gui settings modifier.  It's really easy to add program shortcuts to the launcher on it and to customize icons.

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I confess that I've been trying to migrate to Linux for moral reasons for over a decade.

I downloaded distro after distro and made a sea of coasters trying to find the right one.

And now I've found it- #!

I fell in love with it for the good looks and then realized there's a very fast, efficient, stable core to Crunchbang that I haven't found elsewhere.

Then I realized how cool Conky is. Next I realized that this was the operating system I would have designed for myself if I had the expertise and time.

Since loading Crunch on my file server / pytivo box (ps anyone with a tivo needs to set this up for themselves smile  I've tried to go to other distros to play around, Ubuntu, Mint, Suse, etc but as soon as they load in Vmware or Virtualbox I start wishing I could Super+W or Super+T or Super F to get where I want to go quickly.

I'll stop fawning now, but Core, thanks for all your hard work on this.  I'm very grateful to have a file server that only has to be restarted every couple months (ie when we have a power outage).  It's a miracle to experience this stability since I've used primarily windows (as far back as Win3.1).  I've learned that the instabilities in windows are everywhere and the only instabilities in Crunchbang are the ones I cause ;-/.

I'm very excited to get a hold of #! 10.  With a loyal forum like this torrent distribution will be a brilliant way to distribute your distro. Viva Crunchbang!

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I wanted to give #! a try because of its use of Openbox. I've heard a lot of goods things about Openbox but had never used it before. I've been using Linux for many years and was just looking for something new to try.

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I wanted a small footprint and small resource distro for my netbook. CrunchBang was all of this and more. It is amazing what is packed into #1. The  dumbed down distro that my Eee Pc 900a came with was a joke.

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

why crunchbang ? ... its light, fast and easy configurable linux for my netbook asus eee pc 4g.. great work smile

Asus EEE PC 4G
#! Crunchbang Linux 10 Alpha 1 "Statler"

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

Why am I using #! [?]

This is going to sound dumb, but it's because of the system stats and shortcut keys on the right-hand side of the desktop. Since I began using Linux, and slowly learning just how much you can do with the command line interface, I've moved away from the GUI-side of the force, and using fast, simple solutions to get things done easier, faster.

I figure anyone who designs their system with the shortcuts off to the side has to view their creation as a tool to get stuff done. One of the things I love about Linux is that you can make it as minimal or as complex as you want. If you desire the latter, run something with KDE, but for me, for getting the task at hand done so I can go play, there's Crunchbang.

I remember in a personal interview, on television, with the North American CEO of Porsche;  he was asked, "Why would you want to own a car that can do 200 mph?"

His reply:  "Why would anyone want to own a sports-car that can run at 200 mph, when the speed limit is 75?
Because, you can drive down the freeway at 50 miles an hour and no one will challenge you to a race.  Because they know, that you are the 'baddest' fastest car on the road.  cool

No, you will never drive 200 mph.  But, it's nice to know that you can, if you want to.lol  #!Crunchbang is kinda like that.

That reminds me of ram in #!.
For me, #! uses about 100meg, or under general use no more then 256mb, and I havent ever seen it over 500mb.
On a laptop with 4GB of ram.... It almost forces me to use virtualmachines to put that ram to use! lol
Still, its nice booting up and seeing 100mb compared to 1.8GB on Win7 haha. cool

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I just love to be totally in control of what happens on the computer. CrunchBang gives that feeling. And it looks gorgeous, it's lightning fast. It's also a nice way to learn more about Linux and get your hands dirty, but at the same time have a working computer. With ArchLinux (which I tried first) it's a different story it requires more skill from the start smile.
Ubuntu is nice too, but somehow it feels more and more like a Microsoft product each release hmm
Anyhow keep up the good work!

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

At the beginning it was a random happening that I found Crunchbang - Linux.I was searching for an alternative operating system for my Netbook - Ubuntu with GNOME,KDE and even XFce was to heavy - weighted for it's hardware,Fedora made problems with the resolution and the Wireless - LAN and ArchLinux had problems with my Flashdisk - HDD.

I was searching at distrowatch.org and I used google with terms like "Netbook Linux","Netbook Linux Distribution","Netbook OS" and so on and after a while I found a blog entry in which the name "Crunchbang" was used - I liked the name so I started some researches about the distribution. After a short amount of time I came to the decision,"Well,I like it.Let's just try!" - I did and .. so,here I am! big_smile

I use it because it's different to the "classic"distributions, because of his "small" (comparing Debian or Ubuntu) but very friendly communtiy and because it is very lightweighted.(I really love Openbox now!)

cheers!

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

Hm, I started with Linux in the late 1992. A colleague in the computer firm I was working gave me a copy on 3.5" disks. That was the beginning. Later I got SLS, and when the first SuSE got into the shops, I bought a copy of that with handbook. I kept SuSE until version 7.2, that one I found so ... bad ... that I dropped and looked around long time for a better one. Then came Aurox Linux, yet a discontinued Linux like so many others. Switched to Fedora, but to often it was buggy and not secure for a productive machine. Then I used Gentoo. But it's not really intelligent to compile again and again everything ... and in the end ... you need much more time for compiling, then you get by having a maybe 4% faster software .... Back to openSuSE now and Debian parallel. I tried Ubuntu 6.06 ... but didn't like it. With Ubuntu 8.04 I gave it a chance and switched from there mainly to Linux Mint after a short period.
I was very pleased with Linux Mint, ever, it's very productive, but since 9.04 is out, there have been some nice bugs in the .deb based distros ... that again pushed me back to openSUSE 11.2 ... very nice, until .. a showstopper bug. For nearly 2 months they had an for Eee PCs incompatible kernel.
I tried eb4.0 ... nice ... but not ready yet ... and slow somehow.
Then Statler was announced on distrowatch.com ... since years, I try nearly every distro that comes out new ... a typical distro-hopper. But Crunchbang was what I'm really was looking for. A distro that gives me the oportunity to work with keyboard only if I like. The touchpad can really be disabled (not every distro can do this ... sadly v.v). tint2 and openbox was totally new ... but I like it. And dmenu is ... awesome. I feel like it is 1993 again ... my productivity has raised ... that's what Crunchbang did! It's now my main system ... and I only do build up an archlinux beside .... to have a KISS System to ... that shows me, what's new ^.^

I think that sums up my computer experience VERY well. People ask me how I've gotten so good with computers and I tell them that "it's because I broke my computer, fixed it, broke it, reformatted it. Got it working again, fiddled around and broke it [insert that 100x's over] and that's how I got so good!"

My story with linux actually started when I was about 12 and my friend told me that his dad worked for Novell and that he had to have a linux computer at home. I didn't know what it was, so he showed me the desktop cube that compiz can do and my eyes just popped! I loved the idea. Then after I got a desktop that could finally handle linux I tried ubuntu, slackware and then a few years later a friend of my showed me his #! desktop at work, I LOVED the layout, its so very close to how I would design a system it's almost eerie... Just needs to blue in it and I'll be good to go! cool

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I distro-tested everything on distrowatch, even built my own distro and was on the dev team of another (previously) top 10 distrowatch distro.

Searching for that perfect distro. Arch or Debian based, with a Window Manager instead of a DE. I previously always installed Fluxbox.

Then Crunchbang went Debian and Statler was here.

My searching stopped.

The bonus is that the Crunchbang has a cool community and a head dev who actually takes part in the community.

Nice package all-round smile

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

First, I must say that #! will never replace Arch Linux for me. That said, it serves an entirely different role from Arch. While I love the configurability of Arch, #! will install in under an hour, and be configured in something that approximately mirrors my preferences. I've never used OpenBox before, but I'm an ardent fluxbox user, so Openbox is a nice solution. On top of that, #! is much easier to use than Arch, particularly for a new user, so I suspect #! will be my distro of choice to give to nab linux users. I think it's great that there's a linux distro that manages to take the good of ubuntu and refine away the bloat. The apt-get system is absolutely amazing, although I favor pacman and the AUR over it, but it's entirely not an issue, as the Ubuntu repositories are huge.

I found it amusing that among the first posts on this tread stated that #! is like Arch Linux for busy people. It's certainly the case. Installing #! after Gentoo was a fantastic exercise in simplicity. Only thing that didn't work out of the box is wireless, which is an understandable problem, since I have to go through all hell with it with every distro I try.

All in all, #! passed my ease of use and lightweight trials with flying colors.  I love it!

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

Theres a ton of great distros out there, but finding one that both me, and my laptop agree on has been hard. One of use is usually overworked.

The minute the crunchbang cd loaded, both my PC , and me said HELLOOOOOO BETTY!

Off Like A Prom Dress...

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

Now that Statler is here I need a new entry.

I use CrunchBang because I use Xfce tongue

Re: Why do you use #!Crunchbang

I had stopped using #! until statler appeared tbh, but i was wanting to explore debian anyway, and was in need of a pretty stable, rolling release base for virtualisation.   #! currently fits that bill perfectly for me (even tho it's alpha!?).

The main reason I stayed it touch with it tho is this forum.  By far the most intersting and friendly linux forum i've found.

I've found the forums to be amazing as well. I wonder if it's the size of the community; if >X then "grumpy."

Even when asking a Dumb Noob Question (hey, you can look at my posts - they're not pearls of wisdom) I got a nice answer, and I hope at least the quality of the questions in improving...

So, if I haven't said it individually, thanks to everyone for making this a nice place to hang out! cool

I like #! because it (currently) uses Ubuntu repositories, it has a minimalist approach, Openbox and XFCE are both great, and (perhaps most importantly) #! is NOT Microsoft or Fedora!  big_smile
