+1 For Thunar as well
Might be a stupid question, but how do you change the defualt file manager?
use thunar here.
network integration would be a big + (if possible).
@thefunnelweaver - Just edit your menu (menu.xml) and shortcuts (rc.xml) to use your new file manager and not PCManFM. Optionally you can also uninstall PCManFM.

...and don't forget to also edit your 'obpipemenu-places'. In Leafpad just use search & replace 'pcmanfm' with 'thunar', as root of course.

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I mount my Windows partition in Thunar? PCman showed the partition and i could mount it in root. Thunar does not show it. Any way to do this conveniently?

My only problem with pcmanfm is, I can't mount my network places at work, and I don't know how can I
do it in an effortless (not with type hundreds of words in terminal) way....
+1 for Thunar. Good call omns. ![]()

To see what all the fuss was about I installed and used Thunar for a day...
roughly 3 seconds into my 24 hour trial I was sold.
I dunno, I'm happy to admit I was wrong with pcmanfm... It is still a great file manager but Thunar is more, refined?

well thats decided then ![]()
i do prefer pcmanfm for basic file management, tabs are very useful, but it just misses too many features, i still miss trash ![]()
is just a
sudo apt-get install thunargood enough or do i need to add some extra packages
I prefer your wonderful communal advice over google search ![]()
That should be enough, though if you want any plugins or volume management, they have to be installed separately.

which would you recommended?
Nvm, I think installing Thunar also installs the volume management so you may not need to install it separately.
I do install the archive plugin though (thunar-archive-plugin). And if you want file thumbnails, install thunar-thumbnailers.
I just wish thunar or nautilus would have a split-view option by default that you could turn on and off. IMHO tabs in a file manager have limited use, but split view is really helpfull. I'm still sticking with nautilus, but thunar is a good second choice.(I know there was a patched version of nautilus floating around with split-view, but I don't think it works in karmic yet)

Installed, tried, removed pcmanfm. Although it was painful because pcmanfm was only ~1meg and thunar was 40, thunar just seems to be more intuitive as said before. Drag and drop that actually works makes the change worth it regardless.
Thanks all
Something not very convenient in pcmanfm (i don't know how it is in other file managers) is the limited sorting capability.
If I choose to arrange the icons by type, then files of a same type will be grouped but not sorted by alphabetical order. If I choose sort by alphabetical order, than I will get a mess of files of different type. This lack of "order by type then by name" feature is another thing on top of other issues you already know (still i like this file manager).
^ that sorting bug, the lack of a trash bin, and no support for 7z and rar archives are my biggest gripes with it. Otherwise Id love to use the light-weight PCManFM.
"pcmanfm was only ~1meg and thunar was 40"
that sells it for me. i dont see the extra capabilities it confers to be worth another 39 meg where 1 would do a passable job.
n thats me come a long way from konqueror (which i still love, but dont want to tarnish my crunchbang installs with all those libs just for the heftyness that is konqueror).

sudo apt-get install thunar thunar-volman thunar-thumbnailers thunar-archive-plugin thunar-media-tags-plugin ffmpegthumbnailerIt's also a good idea to start Thunar in daemon mode, add:
thunar --daemon &
to ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
^I usually just install thunar (which brings volman as a dependency) and the archive plugin. I can live without the thumbnailers but can see that they'd be handy ![]()
In this way, you can also remplace "Network-Manager" by "Wicd" ... more efficient !
