Re: Replace pcmanfm in 9.10.01 with Thunar
+1 for Thunar, I'd rather use the windows version of servant salamander in wine than pcmanfm.
+1 for wicd. I don't understand the ubuntu network thingy, too complicate ![]()

I have been switching back and forth between thunar and pcmanfm. At the moment I'm using Thunar. I really like the tabs in pcmanfm, but the way it handles thumbnails irritates me. In the end Thunar has more pluses and less minuses than pcmanfm and so I think Thunar would be better fm to use in #! in future.
My sentiments exactly the main thing pcmanfm has going for it right now in my case is tabs. But my god does it bork thumbnails.

100% agree. Also, it might be stupid, but I also really love emblems. I've yet to see anyone mention that you can't have emblems in pcmanfm.

I second WiCd
my opinion...no to thunar, yes to wicd (for many of the reasons explained above)
Concerning the NetworkManager: Upt to now there's no other app that allows me to connect via my umts-stick without having to edit the dial-scripts.
Tried umtsmon which came with a pretty up-to-date Sidux, but that one failed half way.
Another vote vote for Thunar here!..
One thing pcmanfm can do is draw the contents of your Desktop folder on your ...er desktop. That's not very crunchbangy to do I suppose, but I like to drop things on my desktop until I've decided what to do with them. With Thunar you'd need to install xfdesktop4 to do that.

Good point

I have no problem with that
I love the way xfdesktop handles the desktop. Of course I choose to turn off desktop icons with it as well but it's a much better option than using pcmanfm to control the desktop. You have much more control over what you see and what you don't, both on terms of desktop icons and the xfdesktop menu itself.
+1 for thunar.
don't mind if it doesn't have tabs.
will we see pcmanfm in the lite version, and thunar in the full version?

That's an interesting idea. My guess would be Thunar in both.
I didn't experience problems with pcmanfm, so i would vote for it because of the big size difference to thunar. But of cause functionality comes first. So it's maybe a good idea to take thunar for the next release.
But do you know that Hong Jen Yee is working on a complete rewrite of pcmanfm? I'm just wondering cause nobody mentioned it.
... its author, 洪任諭 (Hong Jen Yee), decided to totally redesign and rewrite the whole program. ... So unless there are critical bugs or security problems, the original PCManFM 0.5.1 won't be updated recently. Nor will bug reports or feature requests be handled now. So hold your breath, stay tunned, and give us some time.
(from http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/)
I really like pcmanfm and I hope it will at least be a candidate for future releases of crunchbang.

Currently, #! Lite is simply #! Full with only the basic applications. A lot of users like to start with #! Lite and then add their favorite applications.
Back in 8.10, Corenomial briefly toyed with the idea of using different, lightweight apps for the Lite version (such as Kazehakase web browser), but decided against it.
I think the idea of using different, lite-weight apps for the Lite version has its pros and cons.
omploader integration.
i change my vote! thunar is worthy!
hehe. turncoat.
is that unanimous now then? lol.
+1 thunar. ![]()

I can live without tabs too, but it would be wonderful if the Thunar devs could give us the option of a 2-pane view!
(...dream on, or study up for 10 years and code it yourself...
)

+1 for THAT! Love the ncurses interface
Edit: On topic: I like pcmanfm better since it's a lot faster...
Strangely, ive noticed no difference between the two - thunar boots up just as quick.
Also from above: The thumbnailer for thunar works 10 times better, and 100 times faster than the one with pcmanfm. I have no idea why, but I just noticed it when I started seeing all of the thumbnails in thunar instead of every third every once in a while every other day with pcmanfm ![]()
As for wicd, Im gonna go with it not working for me because of PEBKAC ![]()

I only just saw this thread.
it reminded me of how many things in pcmanfm I dislike.
If I'm honest, I never use tabs either, so it's not even a consideration to me.
Little things (like the aforementioned fact that pcmanfm shows all volumes, even the unmounted ones) will make me miss pcmanfm, but I've switched to thunar, as it seems to be the best option for me for now.
Oh, and I always switch to wicd in #!
However, if I had a USB 3G modem, i would be using Network Manager.

Blimey, you have a good memory! ![]()

I remember that release candidate (or whatever it was) vividly because it was my first introduction to tint... I actually stuck with that RC instead of the final 8.10 for quite some time. (Replaced kazehakase with firefox though.)
i like midori, or seeing firefox implimented tighter and faster, like iceweasle or minefeild. or even graphical versions of links (, links2, lynx).
if a superlightweight version was to appear, it'd likely have to consider dillo too.
Pcmanfm is certainly light and zippy and a great choice for the type of distro that #! represents. It's a little bit quirky at times, like us humans, but perhaps that is why I have grown fond of it. So a lean and mean pcmanfm is the one for me.
+1 on thunar anyway.
Main reason: mount NTFS partitions with just a click, and it can add custom action (love "open as root" :-) )
-1 on wicd
Being lazy, I need full VPN (mostly IPSec) and UMTS (no broadband here, thank you) support OOTB.
And latest network manager is not that bad at supporting WiFi (not as good as wicd, of course, but decent enough for me: no W** encryption, but a plain IPSec VPN after getting in).
I usually install the lite version, and add what I really need (e.g. no gwibber, and yes to OOo, build-essentials, wireshark).
