Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

You're right; it works. Why didn't I think of that?

I assume you are talking about this action?

gksudo thunar %f

To be honest I only thought of it after reading your post. Remembered something in the wiki about changing pcmanfm to thunar in the "places" pipe menu.

That's what forums are for I suppose - bouncing ideas around smile

Something interesting I did recently: instead of having separate actions for opening folders and files as root, I combined them into one with:

gksudo gnome-open %f

This works too:

gksudo thunar %f

if you haven't got the gnome library.

That doesn't work for me. Instead of opening a .desktop app to edit, the gksudo thunar %f cmd opens the application.

Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

.desktop files are launchers. The default action is to execute not edit.

Yes, but I thought the point of your custom action was to both edit files and open folders with root permissions. Your action accomplishes this. The one with gksudo thunar does not.

Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

You are correct. I think Thunar uses exo-open and not gnome-open, hence the difference.

Well, with the gnome-open custom action, Gnome is opened when you open a directory with root permissions. I prefer using Thunar to open all directories and gedit for editing files that require root access.

I need 2 custom actions to accomplish this, however, with the "appearances" properly set, the two actions do not show up simultaneously.

Name: Open Directory as Root
Description: Opens the current folder with root permissions
Command:

gksu thunar %f

File pattern: *
Appears if selection contains: Directories
*Caution with the root access

Name: Edit as Root
Description: Opens selected text file with root permissions
Command:

gksu gedit %f

File pattern: *
Appears if selection contains: Text Files
*I use gedit as my text editor, but you can substitute gedit for any text editor you wish.
*Caution with the root access

nabilalk, that looks like the best solution.

Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

Hi,

Could it be possible to have, just like in #! 9.04 with pcman, the possibility to press F4 to activate "open terminal here" ?

Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

Thunar has custom actions but afaik, you cannot create keyboard shortcuts for them.

Re: Since Thunar seems an overwhelming choice...

I must say that I like Thunar a lot, but I built pcman 0.97 with direct udisk support about a week ago and am loving it.  It'll automount now without the use of HAL/GIO/GVFS, but it has network support like Thunar/Nautilus by using GIO/GVFS.  Really good stuff.
