Topic: experiment i'm thinking of doing...

well, i've been itching to walk myself through installing slackware, but i still love crunchbang, so i thought, why not make "slackbang"? i'm going to try to teach myself how to make my own slack  based crunchbang lookalike. i want it to be just like CB except for the easy stuff tongue i'll be getting a sempron-based system pretty soon and i'm hoping to make a light distro, so this should be perfect.

Hello seth smile

Sounds like a fun and rewarding project, good luck with it! Please keep us informed on your progress.

On an unrelated subject, I rebuilt the crunchbang-look and crunchbang-wallpapers packages tonight, your HUGE wallpaper should now be included by default with all future CrunchBang releases. Nice work and thank you again for your contribution! smile

wow, thanks! i'm honored smile

Seth, keep me updated with how you get on with this... I've also been thinking of doing an Arch or Slack based Openbox system for a while, it'll be interesting to see what you come out with...

Re: experiment i'm thinking of doing...

hey guys, i think we gonna crunch every light distro we can....  corenominal open the way to a "crunchy open world" big_smile
about "crunchy-like-distro", i made my crunch-3D for fun and it's fun to play with linux distro with #! features wink

ps: you can take a look to this page for inspiration: this is a doc about a script to build openbox distro from ubuntu 8.10 or debian 5.0 minimal . it's in french but easy to understand. (not my work)
if you really need, i can translate it for you (at your own risks big_smile ).

yeah, i thought about doing arch before slack, as arch is my favorite distro (sorry phillip tongue), but i've never used slackware and i want to give it a try.
it might be a little while before i get that hardware but i do have a windows partition on my macbook that i don't NEEEEEEEED to have (though it's nice since i'm in an A+ program). i'd prefer not to use that though, just because most distros, even ubuntu and cb, don't run how i like on macbooks without a LOT of work.

Re: experiment i'm thinking of doing...

Hi Seth, there are some guys who are trying to put together a similar sort of project using Arch as a base. You may be able to collaborate with them. You can find them in IRC on the #crashx channel using the Spotchat (irc.spotchat.org) servers.

Re: experiment i'm thinking of doing...

cool, thanks for the tip.

Re: experiment i'm thinking of doing...

There are no packages for Openbox, tint, deluge etc in the Slackware repo. A lot of things available in #! are just not there.

There is slackbuilds.org, a site with buildsscripts to create packages:
http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=openbox&sv=
http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=tint&sv=

I'm running slackware 12.2 on my other box and I used the scripts on slackbuilds to create openbox (easy), tint2 (easy), deluge (easy), vlc (pain in the ass) and other packages.
