Topic: Forum Issues

Hello everyone smile

Apologies for the recent forum issues. For anyone not aware, a moderator's account was used to delete all forum posts, except for those in help and support. I have restored all the posts from last night's daily backup. Apologies to anyone who has missing posts since the backup was made.

I am currently unaware why or how this has happened and I will try to find out more details. Once again, apologies for this.

Re: Forum Issues

Hum... I was suspecting something like that happened. I received e-mail post alerts which links wrongly to different posts than those advertised. Have you made enemies through your life, Philip? smile

Funny, I said something similar when it happened (and I don't normally swear - especially the C word!) yikes

We're still trying to work out how a moderator's forum account was accessed.

En Taro Adun was certainly Rigosantana3's sig but I think it is a little too early to jump to any conclusions.  Philip doesn't have enemies - he just has acquaintances who have a different opinion than he does! lol

The Mystery Moderator lol

Re: Forum Issues

I have a lot of respect for Anonymous and doubt that he and his anime avatar were responsible.  Most likely his account got hacked.  But I don't see what anyone would expect to gain from undermining the integrity of this forum.

Re: Forum Issues

i wasnt affected by the "issues" and i cant say that i can speak with any authority for the other people i see posting on the forum plus i just havn't been around here for that long.  This is the first forum that I have ever really gotten involved with posting regularly.

But I just can't imagine the mind set behind something like what happened here, or what could lead someone to be so hostile as to be motivated to do it.

My observations of Anonymous (if it means anything) is that he has been consistently helpful in help&support, usually one of the first to welcome new members in the introductions thread and a positive contributor throughout the forum.

It's hard to find something if you don't know what you're looking for.
I have a blog, it's mostly about conky and lua stuff... go here.

Agreed, Anonymous has been influential in helping to create a welcoming, helpful and positive community. The attack was definitely out of character and I do not think that anyone is jumping to any conclusions as to what happened. smile

Re: Forum Issues

Anonymous showed quite some partiality to Ringo's off-topic escapades and went out of his way to protect him. 'Welcoming' and 'helpful' in a misguided way - quite often.

If your account gets hacked you're responsible - we shouldn't be reading tosh like that on a forum like this.

Guessing the first line of the first post should have read: "a moderator's account".

Er..., what exactly should I be doing to ensure my account isn't hacked? Secure password? Is there anything else we users can do?

Re: Forum Issues

I agree with johnraff.  Blaming a user - moderator *or* luser - for getting hacked is like blaming a woman for getting raped.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: Forum Issues

I hope neither of you two become moderators on any board where I enjoy hanging out.

Re: Forum Issues

Let us all relax, what's happened has happened, Corenominal is figuring all the details out, creating a flame fest here is really just degrading the forums.

Sigs do it better

Re: Forum Issues

After reading this I have to say I hope anonymous or any volunteer moderators anywhere don't feel unappreciated; the forums being deleted is insignificant in comparison.  The back-up restore went very nicely, hooray! lol

+1.

Re: Forum Issues

I didnt even know something happened until I read this thread lol Backup must have worked splendidly. I dont think blaming will help anything - aside from a secure password, theres not much else one can do; no need to be an ass about it.

Ill add a pointless conspiracy theory twist: was it rigo, or was it someone who knew our dislike of him and used that phrase as a way to misdirect our thoughts? And Hitler lives in Brazil roll

And +1  <3 for mods - first forum where they have not lost sight of their role to serve to community and I think #!'s expansion is partly due to that

Re: Forum Issues

Very impressive backup btw. All praise to Phillip! I seem to remember some other quite well-known, and useful, sites' data being completely lost on a couple of occasions...

Thank you, I am just glad it worked. Also, I guess I owe the attacker a favour, if it was not for the attack, I would still have no idea whether my backup system actually works or not! tongue

LOL, I doubt it! big_smile

Re: Forum Issues

Everybody are suspect and do not know who to blame .. one or cluster of bad guys  mad:mad::mad:

I don't think Shuttleworth did it. It's more likely that fans of Billy Ray Cyrus has they fingers in this..
